इमं नित्यपुमातिष्ठन्कुरवः किंकरास्तदा। सर्वे च नृप राजानं धनेश्वरमिवामराः
At that time, the Kurus constantly served him, and all the kings, O ruler, attended him like the immortals serve the Lord of Wealth.
एष सर्वान्महीपालान्करमाहारयत्तदा। वैश्यानिव महाराज विवशान्स्ववशानपि
He then compelled all the earth’s rulers to pay tribute, O great king, just as even the independent and dependent Vaishyas are made to do.
अष्टाशीतिसहस्राणि स्नातकानां महात्मनाम्। उपजीवन्ति राजानमेनं सुचरितव्रताः
Eighty-eight thousand great-souled graduates, steadfast in good conduct, depend on this king for their livelihood.
एष वृद्धाननाथांश्च व्यङ्गान्पङ्गूश्चं वामनान् । पुत्रवत्पालयामास प्रजाधर्मेण चाभिभूः
He cared for the elderly without protectors, the disabled, the lame, and the dwarfs as a father would his sons, ruling with the law of righteousness over his subjects.
एष धर्मे दमे चैव दाने सत्ये रतः सदा। महाप्रसादो ब्रह्मण्यः सत्यवादी च पार्थिवः
He is always devoted to righteousness, self-restraint, charity, and truth; this king is greatly gracious, devoted to the Brahmanas, and a speaker of truth.
श्रीमत्संपत्प्रभावेन तप्यते यस्य कौरवः । रगणः सह कर्णेन सौबलेन च वीर्यवान्
By the power of his prosperity and wealth, O Kaurava, the group with Karna and the mighty Saubala are tormented.
गुणा न शक्याः संख्यातुमेतस्यैव नरेश्वर। एष धर्मपरो नित्यमनृशंसः सुशीलवान्
O lord of men, the virtues of this very man cannot be counted; he is ever devoted to righteousness, compassionate, and of noble character.
एवं युक्तो महाराजा पाण्डवः पुरुषर्षभः । कथं नार्हति राजार्हमासनं पृथिवीपतिः
Endowed in this way, the great king, the bull among men, the Pandava—how does he not deserve the royal throne, O lord of the earth?
यद्येष राजा कौरव्यः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। कतमोऽस्यार्जुनो भ्राता भीमश्च कतमो बली
If this king is indeed Yudhishthira, son of Kunti and descendant of the Kurus, then which of these is his brother Arjuna, and which one is the mighty Bhima?
नकुलः सहदेवो वा द्रौपदी वा यशस्विनी । यदा ह्यक्षैर्जिता ह्येते नान्तरा श्रूयते कथा
Is it Nakula, Sahadeva, or the illustrious Draupadi? For these were all won at dice, and no other story is heard in between.
य एष बललोऽभूत्ते सूपकारश्च ते नृप। एष भीमो महाभाग भीमवेगपराक्रमः
This one, who was your cook and strongman, O king, is Bhima, greatly fortunate and of terrible speed and prowess.
एष क्रोधवशान्हत्वा पर्वते गन्धमादने। सौगन्धिकानि पुष्पाणि कृष्णार्थे समुपानयत्
It was he who, driven by anger, slew on Mount Gandhamadana and brought Saugandhika flowers for Krishna.
गन्धर्व एष वै हन्ता कीचकानां दुरात्मनाम्। व्याघ्रानृक्षान्गजांश्चैव हतवांश्च पुरे तव
He is the Gandharva who slew the wicked Kichakas, and in your city he killed tigers, bears, and elephants as well.
हिडिम्बं च बकं चैव किर्मीरं च जटासुरम्। हत्वा निष्कण्टकं चक्रे अरण्यं सर्वतः शुभम्
He slew Hidimba, Baka, and the demon Kirmira, and made the entire forest safe and auspicious, free from thorns.
यश्चासीदश्वबन्धस्ते नकुलोऽयं परन्तप। गोसङ्ख्यः सहदेवश्च माद्रीपुत्रौ महाबलौ
And the one who was your horse-keeper is Nakula, O subduer of foes; and the one called Gosaṅkhya is Sahadeva, the mighty sons of Madri.
शृङ्गारवेषारणौ रूपवन्तौ मनस्विनौ । नानारथसहस्राणां समर्थौ भरतर्षभौ
Disguised as keepers of horses and cattle, handsome and wise, these scions of Bharata are capable of facing thousands of chariots.
एषा पद्मपलाशाक्षी सुमध्या चारुहासिनी । सैरन्ध्री द्रौपदी राजन्यकृते कीचका हताः
This one, with lotus-petal eyes, slender waist, and lovely smile, is Sairandhri Draupadi; for her sake, the Kichakas were slain by the royal command.
द्रुपदस्य प्रिया पुत्री धृष्ट्युम्नस्य चानुजा । अग्निकुण्डात्समुद्भूता द्रौपदी त्ववगम्यताम्
She is the beloved daughter of Drupada and the younger sister of Dhrishtadyumna, born from the fire altar—know her as Draupadi.
अस्त्रज्ञो दुर्लभः कश्चित्केवलं पृथिवीमनु। धनुर्भृतामतिश्रेष्ठः कौन्तेयोयं धनंजयः
Rare indeed is one who knows the weapons on earth; this son of Kunti, Dhananjaya, is the best among bowmen.
एतेन खाण्डवं तस्य ह्यकामस्य शतक्रतोः। दग्धं नागवनं चैव सह नागैर्नराधिप
By him, the Khandava forest of Indra, though unwilling, was burned down, along with the forest of serpents and its inhabitants, O lord of men.
वर्षं च शरवर्षेण वारितं दुर्जयेन वै। करमाहारिताः सर्वे पार्थिवाः पृथिवीतले
By his shower of arrows, even the rain was checked, unconquerable as he is; all the kings of the earth have paid him tribute.
स्त्रीवेषं कृतवानेष तव राजन्निवेशने। बृहन्नलेति यामाहुरर्जुनं जयतांवरम्
He assumed the guise of a woman in your palace, O king; he whom they call Brihannala is Arjuna, foremost among conquerors.
उषिताःस्म सुखं सर्वे तव राजन्निवेशने। अज्ञातवासे निभृता गर्भवास इव प्रजाः
We all dwelled happily in your palace, O king, hidden in exile, like offspring in the womb.
यदाऽर्जुनेन ते वीराः कथिताः पञ्च पाण्डवाः। पुनरेव च तान्पार्थान्दर्शयामास चोत्तरः
When Arjuna revealed to your heroes that these were the five Pandavas, then Uttara again showed those Parthas.
य एष जाम्बूनदशुद्धगौर- तनुर्महान्सिंह इव प्रवद्धः । प्रचण्डघोणः पृथुदीर्घनेत्र- स्ताम्रायताक्षः कुरुराज एषः
This one, with a body of pure golden hue like Jambunada gold, great and majestic like a lion, fierce and broad-eyed, with long, coppery eyes—he is the king of the Kurus.
अयं पुनर्मत्तगजेन्द्रगामी प्रतप्तचामीकरशुद्धगौरः। पृथ्वायतांसो गुरुदीर्घबाहु- र्वृकोदरः पश्यत पश्यतैनम्
Here is another, moving like a maddened elephant, his complexion pure and radiant like refined gold, broad-shouldered, with heavy, long arms—behold him, the mighty Vrikodara.
यस्त्वेव पार्श्वेऽस्य महाधनुष्मा- ञ्श्यामो युवा वारणयूथपोपमः । सिंहोन्नतांसो गजराजगामी पद्मायताक्षोऽर्जुन एष वीरः
And beside him stands a youthful hero, dark in complexion, bearing a great bow, resembling the leader of an elephant herd, with lion-like raised shoulders, walking like a king elephant, his eyes wide as lotuses—this is Arjuna.
राज्ञः समीपे पुरुषोत्तमौ तु यमाविमौ विष्णुमहेन्द्रकलौ। मनुष्यलोके सकले समोऽस्ति ययोर्न रूपे न बले न शीले
Near the king are two foremost men, like Yama and Vishnu, resembling Indra in strength; in the world of men, none equals them in appearance, power, or character.
आभ्यां तु पार्श्वे कनकोत्तमाङ्गी यैषा प्रभा मूर्तिमतीव गौरी। नीलोत्पलाभा सुरदेवतेव कृष्णा स्थिता मूर्तिमतीव लक्ष्मीः
At their side stands a woman whose limbs are adorned with gold, radiant as if light itself has taken form, fair as Gauri, with the hue of a blue lotus, like a divine goddess; Krishna stands there, manifest as Lakshmi herself.
एवं निवेद्य तान्पार्थान्पाण्डवान्पञ्च भूपतेः। ततोऽर्जुनस्य वैराटिः कथयामास विक्रमम्
Thus, having presented those five Pandavas to the king, the Virata spoke of Arjuna's valor.
