तं प्रेक्षमाणस्त्वथ धर्मराजं पप्रच्छ पार्थोऽथ स भीमसेनम्। किं धर्मराजो हि यथापुरं मां मुखं प्रतिच्छाद्य न चाह किंचित्
Then, seeing the king of righteousness, Partha asked Bhimasena: 'Why does Yudhishthira, as before, cover his face and say nothing to me?'
तमेवमुक्त्वा परिशङ्कमानं दृष्ट्वाऽर्जुनं भीमसेनं च राजा। तदाऽब्रवीत्तावभिवीक्ष्य राज- न्युधिष्ठिरस्तत्परिमृज्य रक्तम्
Seeing Arjuna and Bhimasena thus suspicious, the king Yudhishthira, looking at them and wiping away the blood, spoke to them.
मन्युं नियच्छन्नुपविष्ट आसम्
Controlling his anger, he sat down.
शुभार्ह राष्ट्रं न खिलीकृतं भवे- द्वयं तु यस्मिन्सुखिनोऽभवाम। क्रुद्धे तु वीरे त्वयि चाप्रतीते राजा विराटो न लभेत शर्म
Let not this prosperous kingdom be ruined, in which we were happy; if you, the mighty one, are angry and not trusted, King Virata will find no peace.
अजानता तेन च शौर्यमाजौ छन्नस्य सत्रेण बलं च पार्थ। इदं विराटेन मयि प्रयुक्तं त्वां वीक्षमाणो न गतोस्मि हर्षम्
Because he did not know your valor in battle, nor your strength while you were hidden, O Partha, Virata has acted thus toward me; seeing you, I have not felt joy.
तेनाप्रमेयेन महाबलेन तस्मिंस्तथोक्ते शममास्थितेन। तं भीमसेनो बलवानमर्षी धनंजयं क्रुद्धमुवाच वाक्यम्
When that immeasurable, mighty one spoke thus and became calm, Bhimasena, strong and indignant, spoke these words to the angry Dhananjaya.
न पार्थ नित्यं क्षमकालमाह बृहस्पतिर्ज्ञानवतां वरिष्ठः । क्षमीह सर्वैः परिभूयतेसौ यथा भुडङ्गो विषवीर्यहीनः
O Partha, Brihaspati, foremost of the wise, does not say that patience is always proper; the patient man is despised by all, like a serpent without venom.
विराटमद्यैव निहत्य शीघ्रं सपुत्रपौत्रं सकुलं ससैन्यम्। योक्ष्यामहे धर्मसुतं च राज्ये अद्यैव शीघ्रं त्वरिरेष मात्स्यः
Let us kill Virata today, swiftly, with his sons, grandsons, kin, and army; let us install the son of Dharma as king at once, for this Matsya is hasty.
अनेन पाञ्चालसुताऽथ कृष्णा उपेक्षिता कीचकेनाभियुक्ता। तस्मादयं नार्हति राजशब्दं राजा भव त्वं नृप पार्थवीर्यात्
This Panchali, Krishna, was neglected and assaulted by Kichaka; therefore, this one does not deserve the title of king. You be king, O hero, by the strength of the Parthas.
राजा कुरूणां च युधिष्ठिरोऽयं मात्स्येषु राजा भवतु प्रवीरः तं मात्स्यदेहं शतधा भिनद्मि पूर्णोदकं कुम्भमिवाश्मनीह
Yudhishthira is king of the Kurus, and let the mighty one be king among the Matsyas; I will shatter this Matsya’s body into a hundred pieces, like a full water-pot with a stone.
भवतः क्षमया राजन्त्सर्वे दोषाश्च नोऽभवन्। तं मात्स्यं सबलं हत्वा सपुत्रज्ञातिबान्धवम्। पश्चाच्चैव कुरून्सर्वान्हनिष्यामि न संशयः
Because of your forbearance, O King, none of our faults became manifest. Having slain Matsya with his army, along with his sons, kinsmen, and relatives, I shall afterwards destroy all the Kurus as well—of this there is no doubt.
भीमसेनश्च ये चान्ये तथैवेति तमब्रुवन्
Bhimasena and the others likewise spoke in agreement with him.
तमब्रवीद्धर्मसुतो महात्मा क्षमी वदान्यः कुपितं च भीमम्। न प्रत्युपस्थास्यति चेत्सदारः प्रसादने सम्यगथास्तु वध्यः
Then the great-souled son of Dharma, patient and generous, spoke to the angry Bhima: 'If he, with his wife, does not come forward, then let him be rightly punished.'
न हन्तव्यो दुरात्माऽयं विराटश्चापि तेऽर्जुन
This wicked man is not to be killed, nor is Virata, O Arjuna.
श्वः प्रभाते प्रवेक्ष्यामः सभां सिंहासनेष्वपि। राजवेषेण संयुक्ताः स्थानमस्व स्वलंकृताः
Tomorrow morning we shall enter the assembly, adorned in royal attire, and take our places on the thrones, splendidly arrayed.
विराटो यदि तत्रस्थान्राजालङ्कारशोभितान्। राजलक्षणसंपन्नान्यदि तत्र न मंस्यते। पश्चाद्धन्यामहे पार्थ विराटं सहबान्धवम्
If King Virata, seeing us there adorned with royal ornaments and possessing all the marks of royalty, does not recognize us, then, O Partha, we shall slay Virata together with his relatives.
इतिकर्तव्यतां सर्वे मन्त्रयित्वा तु पाण्डवाः। न्यवसंश्चैव तां रात्रिं धर्मज्ञा धर्मवत्सलाः
Having thus deliberated on what should be done, the Pandavas, who knew and cherished righteousness, spent that night there.
सहपुत्रेण मात्स्यः स संप्रहृष्टो नराधिपः । तां रात्रिमवसत्प्रीतः संप्रहृष्टेन चेतसा
The Matsya king, delighted, stayed that night with his son, his heart filled with joy.
ततो द्वितीये दिवसे भ्रातरः पञ्च पाण्डवाः। स्नाताः शुक्लाम्बरधराः सर्वे सुचरितव्रताः
Then, on the second day, the five Pandava brothers, having bathed and clad in white garments, all steadfast in their vows, set forth.
युधिष्ठिरं पुरस्कृत्य सर्वाभरणभूषिताः। अभिपन्ना महाभागा भ्राजमाना महारथाः
With Yudhishthira at their head, adorned with all ornaments, those illustrious, radiant warriors advanced.
विराटस्य सभां प्राप्य भूमिपालासनेषु ते । निषेदुः पावकप्रख्याः सत्रे धिष्ण्येष्विवाग्नयः
Arriving at Virata's assembly, those blazing ones took their seats on the royal thrones, like sacrificial fires on their altars.
तेषु तत्रोपविष्टेषु विराटः पृथिवीपतिः। तस्यां रात्र्यां व्यतीतायां प्रातःकृत्यं समाप्य च
When they had taken their seats there, King Virata, after the night had passed and his morning duties were complete, entered the hall.
गोसुवर्णादिकं दत्त्वा ब्राह्मणेभ्यो यथाविधि । आजगाम सभां राजा उत्तरेण सह प्रभो
Having duly given cows, gold, and other gifts to the Brahmanas, the king entered the assembly with Uttara, O lord.
स तान्दृष्ट्वा महासत्वाञ्ज्वलतः पावकानिव। राजवेषानुपादाय पार्थिवो विस्मितोऽभवत्
Seeing those great souls blazing like fires, adorned in royal attire, the king was astonished.
किमिदं को विधिस्त्वेष भयार्त इव पार्थिवः। पुरुषप्रवरान्दृष्ट्वा विषादमगमन्नृपः
What is this? What manner of event is this? The king, struck with fear upon seeing those foremost of men, became despondent.
अथ मात्स्योऽब्रवीत्कङ्खं देवराजमिव स्थितम् । मरुद्गणैरुपासीनं त्रिदशानामिवेश्वरम्
Then Matsya addressed Kanka, who was seated like the lord of the gods surrounded by the Maruts, as if he were the ruler of the immortals.
स किलाक्षनिवापस्त्वं सभास्तारो मया कृतः। अथ राजासने कस्मादुपविष्टोऽस्यलंकृतः
You, with your dice, have always enlivened this assembly for me; so why are you now seated, adorned, upon the royal throne?
परिहासेच्छया राज्ञो विराटस्य निशम्य तत्। स्मयमानोऽब्रवीद्वाक्यमर्जुनः परवीरहा
Hearing the king of Virata speak thus in jest, Arjuna, the destroyer of enemy heroes, smiling, replied with these words.
इन्द्रस्यार्धासनं राजन्नयमारोढुमर्हति। ब्रह्मण्यः श्रुतवांस्त्यागी सर्वलोकाभिपूजितः
O King, he deserves to ascend half the throne of Indra; devoted to the Brahmanas, learned, generous, and honored by all the worlds.
एष विग्रहवान्धर्म एष वीर्यवतां वरः। एष बुद्ध्याधिको लोके तपसां च परायणम्
He is righteousness embodied, the foremost among the valiant; in wisdom he surpasses all, and is the supreme refuge of ascetic power.
