क्षमयित्वा तु कौरव्यं रणादुत्तरमागतम् । परिष्वज्य दृढं राजा प्रवेश्य भवनोत्तमम्। प्रशशंस ततो मात्स्यः शृण्वतः सव्यसाचिनः
Having forgiven the Kaurava who had returned from battle, the king embraced him firmly, brought him into the splendid palace, and then praised him in the hearing of Savyasachi.
त्वया दायादवानस्मि कैकेयीनन्दिवर्धन। त्वया मे सदृशः पुत्रो न भूतो न भविष्यति
Through you, O increaser of the Kaikeyas' joy, I have gained an heir; through you, I have a son who has never been nor will ever be equaled.
पदं पदसहस्रेण यश्चरन्नापराध्नुयात्। तेन कर्णेन ते तात कथमासीत्समागमः
He who walks a thousand steps without committing offense—how did you, dear one, encounter Karna, who is such as this?
रणे यं प्रेक्ष्य सीदन्ति हृतवीर्यपराक्रमाः। कृपेन तेन ते तात कथमासीत्समागमः
He whom warriors, seeing in battle, lose their strength and valor—how did you, dear one, encounter Kripa, who is such as this?
यस्य तद्विश्रुतं लोके महद्वृत्तमनुत्तमम् । पितुः कृते कृतं घोरं ब्रह्मचर्यमनुत्तमम्
He whose renowned and supreme conduct in the world is great, who performed a terrible and unparalleled vow of celibacy for his father's sake—
योऽयोधीत्समरे रामं जामदग्न्यं प्रतापिनम्। भीष्मोसौ पुरुषव्याघ्र न च युद्धे पराजितः
He who fought in battle with Rama, the son of Jamadagni, the scorching one—this is Bhishma, tiger among men, and he was never defeated in combat.
पराक्रमी च दुर्धर्षो विद्वाञ्शूरो जितेन्द्रियः। दृढवेधी क्षिप्रकारी विश्रुतः सर्वकर्मसु
Mighty, unassailable, learned, heroic, master of his senses, steadfast, swift in action, renowned in all deeds—
तेन ते सह भीष्मेण कुरुवृद्धेन संयुगे । युद्धमासीत्कथं तात सर्वमेतद्ब्रवीहि मे
How did you, dear one, encounter Bhishma, the elder of the Kurus, in battle? Tell me all of this.
पर्वतं यो विनिर्भिन्द्याद्राजपुत्रो वरेषुभिः। दुर्योधनेन ते तात कथमासीत्समागमः
He who could shatter a mountain with his excellent arrows—how did you, dear one, encounter Duryodhana, the prince, in battle?
आचार्यो वृष्णिरीराणां पाञ्चालानां च यः प्रभुः। कुरूणां पाण्डवानां च सर्वक्षत्रस्य यो गुरुः
He who is the teacher of the Vrishnis, the lord of the Panchalas, the master of the Kurus and Pandavas, the guru of all Kshatriyas—
सर्वशस्त्रभृतां श्रेष्ठः सर्वलोकेषु विश्रुतः। तेन द्रोणेन ते तात कथमासीत्समागमः
The foremost among all wielders of weapons, renowned in all worlds—how did you, dear one, encounter Drona in battle?
आचार्यपुत्रो यः शूरो द्रोणादनवमो रणे। तेन वीरेण ते तात कथमासीत्समागमः
He who is the heroic son of the teacher, not inferior to Drona in battle—how did you, dear one, encounter that warrior?
सर्वे चैव महावीर्या धार्तराष्ट्रः महारथाः । तैस्तैर्वीरैश्च ते तात कथमासीत्समागमः
And all the mighty Dhartarashtras, great chariot-warriors, and those various heroes—how did you, dear one, encounter them?
न मया निर्जिता गावो न मया कुरवो जिताः। कृतं च कर्म तत्सर्वं देवपुत्रेण केनचित्
Neither were the cows won by me, nor were the Kurus defeated by me; all that action was accomplished by some son of a god.
स हि भीतं द्रवन्तं मां भीष्मद्रोणमुखान्कुरून्। दृष्ट्वा विषण्णं संग्रामे देवपुत्रो न्यवारयत्
For, seeing me fleeing in fear, and the Kurus led by Bhishma and Drona disheartened in battle, the divine son restrained me.
स हि तिष्ठन्रथोपस्थे वज्रपाणिनिभो युवा। तेन ते निर्जिता गावस्तेन ते कुरवो जिताः
Standing upon the chariot, youthful and resembling one who wields the thunderbolt, it was he who won the cows for you, it was he who defeated the Kurus for you.
तस्य तत्कर्म वीरस्य न मया तात तत्कृतम् । स हि शारद्वतं द्रोणं द्रोणपुत्रं च वीर्यवान् ।ट सूतपुत्रं च भीष्मं च चकार विमुखाञ्शरैः
That deed of the hero was not done by me, dear father; for he, full of valor, turned Sharadvata, Drona, Drona's son, the son of the charioteer, and Bhishma away with arrows.
दुर्योदनं च समरे प्रभिन्नमिव कुञ्जरम्। प्रभग्नमब्रवीद्भीतं राजपुत्रं महाबलम्
He struck Duryodhana in battle, shattering him like an elephant, and addressed the frightened prince of great strength, who was broken.
न हास्तिनपुरे त्राणं तव पश्यामि किंचन। न हास्तिनपुरे भोगा भोक्तुं शक्याः पलायता
I see no protection for you in Hastinapura; nor can you enjoy pleasures in Hastinapura while fleeing.
व्यायामेन परीप्सस्व जीवितं कौरवात्मज । न मोक्ष्यसे पलायंस्त्वं लोके युद्धमना भव। पृथिवीं भोक्ष्यसे जित्वा हतो वा स्वर्गमाप्स्यसि
Strive with effort to preserve your life, son of Kuru; you will not escape by fleeing. Be intent on battle; conquering, you will enjoy the earth, or slain, you will attain heaven.
स निवृत्तो नरव्याघ्रो मुञ्चन्वज्रनिभाञ्शरान्। सचिवैः संवृतो राजा भीष्मद्रोणकृपादिभिः । ततो मे रोमहर्षोऽभूदूरुस्तम्भश्च मेऽभवत्
That tiger among men, releasing arrows like thunderbolts, surrounded by his companions—Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and others—caused my hair to stand on end and my body to tremble.
यदभूद्धनसंकाशमनीकं व्यधमच्छरैः। तत्प्रपुद्य रथानीकं सिंहदर्पसमो युवा। तान्कुरुन्द्रावयद्राजन्रणे नाग इव श्वसन्
That formation, resembling a treasury of wealth, he shattered with arrows; then, approaching the chariot ranks, the youthful hero, equal to a lion in pride, drove away the Kurus in battle like an elephant blowing.
एकेन तेन शूरेण षड्रथाः परिनिर्जिताः । शार्दूलेनेव मत्तेन मृगास्तृणचरा यथा
By that one valiant man, six chariots were utterly defeated, just as a maddened tiger defeats deer grazing on grass.
हयानां च गजानां च शूराणां च धनुष्मताम्। निहतानि सहस्राणि भग्ना च कुरुवाहिनी
Thousands of horses, elephants, and warriors armed with bows were slain, and the Kuru army was broken.
सूतपुत्रं शतैर्विद्ध्वा हयान्हत्वा महारथः । अस्त्रेण मोहयित्वा तं रक्तवस्त्रं समाददे
Having pierced the son of the charioteer with hundreds of arrows, and slain his horses, the great chariot-warrior bewildered him with weapons and took his red garment.
चतुर्भिः पुनरानर्च्छद्भीष्मं शान्तनवं शरैः। स तं विद्ध्वा हयांश्चाशु नास्य वस्त्रं समाददे
Again, he honored Bhishma, son of Shantanu, with four arrows; after piercing him and his horses, he did not take his garment.
दुर्योधनं च बलवान्बाणैर्विव्याध सप्तभिः। तं स विद्ध्वा हयांश्चास्य पीतवस्त्रं समाददे
He struck Duryodhana, strong in battle, with seven arrows; after piercing him and his horses, he took his yellow garment.
द्रोणं कृपं च बलवान्सोमदत्तं जयद्रथम्। भूरिश्रवसमिन्द्राभं शकुनिं च महारथम्
He struck Drona, Kripa, Somadatta, Jayadratha, Bhurishravas—equal to Indra—and Shakuni, the great chariot-warrior.
त्रिभिस्त्रिभिः स विद्ध्वा तु दुःशासनमुखानपि। विविधानि च वस्त्राणि महार्हाण्याजहार सः
Piercing Duḥśāsana and others with three arrows each, he took various precious garments from them.
