पितुः सकाशे तव तात सर्वे वसन्ति पार्था विदितं त्वयेति। तान्मास्म शंसीर्नगरं प्रविश्य भीतः प्रणश्येत्स च मत्स्यराजः
All the Parthas are staying with your father, O prince, as you know; do not reveal this upon entering the city, lest the Matsya king, in fear, be destroyed.
मया जिता सा ध्वजिनी कुरूणां मया हि गावो विजिता द्विषद्भ्यः । एवं तु कामं नगरं प्रविश्य त्वमात्मना कर्म कृतं ब्रवीहि
It is I who have conquered that Kuru army, and I who have won back the cows from the enemy; so, enter the city as you wish and declare the deed as your own.
यत्ते कृतं कर्म न वारणीयं तत्कर्म कर्तुं मम नास्ति शक्तिः। न त्वां प्रवक्ष्यामि पितुः सकाशे यावन्न मां वक्ष्यसि सव्यसाचिन्
What you have done cannot be denied, but I do not have the power to claim that deed; nor will I speak of you before your father until you yourself tell me, Savyasacin.
स शत्रुसेनां तरसा विजित्य आच्छिद्य सर्वं तु धनं कुरूणाम्। श्मशानमागम्य पुनः शमीं तामभ्येत्य तस्थौ शरविक्षताङ्गः
Having swiftly defeated the enemy army and seized all the Kuru wealth, he returned to the cremation ground, approached the shami tree again, and stood there, his body wounded by arrows.
ततः स वह्निप्रतिमो महाकपिः सहैव भूतैर्दिवमुत्पपात। तथा च माया विहिता बभूव सा ध्वजं च सिंहं युयुजे रथे पुनः
Then, like fire, the great monkey, along with the spirits, ascended to heaven; by magic, the banner and the lion were again joined to the chariot.
निधाय तच्चायुधमाजिमर्दनः कुरूत्तमानामिषुधीन्ध्वजांस्तथा। प्रायात्स मात्स्यो नगरं प्रवेष्टुं किरीटिना सारथिना महात्मा
Having set down his weapons, the crusher of foes, and the banners of the foremost Kurus, the noble Matsya prince set out to enter the city, with the diademed one as his charioteer.
पार्थश्च कृत्वा परमार्यकर्म निहत्य शत्रून्द्विषतां निहन्ता। विधाय भूयश्च तथैव वेषं जग्राह रश्मीन्पुनरुत्तरस्य। बृहन्नलारूपमथो विधाय प्रायात्य मात्स्यो नगरं प्रवेष्टुम्
Partha, having performed this most noble deed and slain the enemies, once again assumed his former disguise, took up the reins from Uttara, and, adopting the form of Brihannala, set out to enter the Matsya city.
ततो निवृत्ताः कुरवः प्रभग्नाः शममास्थिताः । परस्परमवेक्ष्यैव जग्मुस्ते हृतवाससः
Then the Kauravas, defeated and stripped of their garments, withdrew and made peace, glancing at one another as they departed.
पन्थानमुपसंगम्य फल्गुनो वाक्यमब्रवीत्। राजपुत्र प्रपद्यस्व धनानीमानि सर्वशः। गोकुलानि महाबाहो वीरगोपालकैः सह
Coming to the road, Phalguna spoke: 'Prince, take possession of all this wealth and these herds, mighty-armed one, along with the brave cowherds.'
ततोऽपराह्णे यास्यामो विराटनगरं प्रति। आश्वास्य पाययित्वा च परिप्लाव्य च वाजिनः
'In the afternoon we will proceed toward the city of Virata, after resting, watering, and refreshing the horses.'
गच्छन्तु त्वरितं दूता गोपालाः प्रेषितास्त्वया। नगरे प्रियमाख्यातुं घोषयन्तु च ते जयम्
'Let messengers be sent quickly, cowherds dispatched by you, to announce the good news in the city and proclaim your victory.'
उत्तरस्त्वरमाणोऽथ दूतानाज्ञापयत्ततः। वचनादर्जुनस्यैव ह्याचक्षध्वं जयं मम
Then Uttara, hurrying, ordered the messengers: 'Announce my victory in the words of Arjuna.'
मया जिता सा ध्वजिनी कुरुणं मया च गावो विजिता द्विषद्भ्यः। एवं तु कामं नगरं प्रविश्य मयाऽऽत्मना कर्म कृतं ब्रवीत
I have conquered that army of the Kurus, and I have won back the cows from the enemies. Thus, after entering the city as I wished, let it be declared that I myself have accomplished this deed.
स विजित्य धनं चापि विराटो वाहिनीपतिः। प्राविशन्नगरं हृष्टश्चतुर्भिः सह पाण्डवैः
Having defeated the enemy and reclaimed the wealth, King Virata, leader of the army, entered the city joyfully together with the four Pandavas.
जित्वा त्रिगर्तान्संग्रामे गाश्चैवानाय्य केवलाः। अशोभत महाराजः सह पार्थैः श्रिया वृतः
Having vanquished the Trigartas in battle and brought back all the cows, the great king shone with splendor, surrounded by the Parthas.
तमासनगत वीरं सुहृदां प्रीतिवर्धनम् । तपतस्थुः प्रकृतयः समन्ताद्ब्राह्मणैः सह
The hero, seated, who increased the joy of his friends, was surrounded on all sides by his subjects and Brahmanas.
सभाजितः सभासद्भिः प्रतिनन्द्य स मत्स्यराट् । विसर्जयामास तदा द्विजांश्च प्रकृतीस्तथा
Honored by the members of the assembly and greeted with praise, King Matsya then dismissed the Brahmanas and his subjects.
ततः स राजा मात्स्यानां विराटो वाहिनीपतिः। प्रविश्यान्तःपुरं रम्यं स्त्रीशतैरुपशोभितम्। उत्तरं तत्र नापश्यत्क्व यात इति चाब्रवीत्
Then King Virata, leader of the Matsyas, entered the beautiful inner chambers adorned with hundreds of women, but did not see Uttara there and asked where he had gone.
आचख्युस्तत्र संहृष्टाः स्त्रियः कन्याश्च वेश्मनि। अन्तःपुरचराश्चैव कुरुभिर्गोधनं हृतम्
There, the delighted women and maidens, as well as the attendants of the inner chambers, reported that the Kurus had taken away the herd of cows.
ताञ्जेतुमभिसंरब्ध एक एवातिसाहसात् । बृहन्नलासहायश्च निर्यातः पृथिवींजयः
Determined to retrieve them, Uttara set out alone with great daring, accompanied by Brihannala, the conqueror of the earth.
उपयातानतिरथान्द्रोणं शान्तनवं कृपम्। कर्णं दुर्योधनं चैव द्रोणपुत्रं च षड्रथान्
He approached the six chariot-warriors: Drona, Kripa, Karna, Duryodhana, the son of Drona, and the descendant of Shantanu.
ततो विराटः परमाभितप्तः पुत्रं निशम्यैकरथेन यातम्। बृहन्नलासारथिमाजिमर्दनं प्रोवाच सर्वानथ मन्त्रिमुख्यान्
Then Virata, greatly distressed upon hearing that his son had gone with a single chariot and Brihannala as charioteer to confront the enemy, spoke to all his chief ministers.
गवां शतसहस्राणि उभिभूय ममात्मजम्। कुस्वः कालयन्ति स्म सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः
The masters of war are delaying my son, having overpowered him with hundreds of thousands of cows.
तस्माद्गच्छतु मे योधा बलेन महता वृताः। उत्तरस्य परीप्सार्थं ये त्रिगर्तैरविक्षताः
Therefore, let my warriors go, accompanied by a great force, to rescue Uttara, those who were not wounded by the Trigartas.
हयांश्च नागांश्च रथांश्च शीघ्रं वादित्रसङ्घांश्च ततः प्रभूतान्। प्रस्थापयामास सुतस्य हेतो- र्विचित्रचित्राभरणोपपन्नान्
He dispatched swiftly horses, elephants, chariots, and numerous groups of musicians, all adorned with various splendid ornaments, for the sake of his son.
एवं स राजा मात्स्यानां महानक्षोहिणीपतिः। व्यादिदेशाथ स क्षिप्रं वाहिनीं चतुरङ्गिणीम्
Thus, the king of the Matsyas, commander of the great army, quickly ordered the fourfold forces to march.
कुमारमाशु जानीत यदि जीवति वा नवा। यस्य यन्ता गतः षण्डो मन्येऽहं स न जीवति
Find out quickly whether the prince is alive or not; since his charioteer is a eunuch, I think he is not alive.
तमब्रवीद्धर्मसुतो विराट- मार्तं विदित्वा कुरुभिः प्रतप्तम्। बृहन्नला सारथिश्चेन्नरेन्द्र परे न नेष्यन्ति तवाद्य गाश्च
Dharmasuta, knowing Virata was troubled by the Kurus, said: 'If Brihannala is his charioteer, O king, your enemies will not take your cows today.'
सर्वान्महीपान्सहितान्कुरूंश्च तथैव देवासुरनागयक्षान्। अलं विजेतुं समरे सुतस्ते अनुष्ठितः सारथिना हि तेन
Your son, accompanied by that charioteer, is capable of defeating all kings together with the Kurus, as well as the gods, asuras, nagas, and yakshas in battle.
सर्वथा कुरवश्चापि ये चान्ये वसुधाधिपाः । त्रिगर्तान्निर्जिताञ्श्रुत्वा न स्थास्यन्ति कथंचन
In any case, the Kurus and the other rulers of the earth, having heard that the Trigartas have been defeated, will not remain there.
