तेषामनीकानि निरीक्ष्य पार्थो विकीर्णयानध्वजकार्मुकाणि। गाण्डीवधन्वा प्रहसन्कुरूणां शङ्ख प्रदध्मौ बलवान्बलेन
Seeing the enemy ranks scattered, their banners and bows broken, Partha, armed with Gandiva, laughed and powerfully blew his conch among the Kurus.
ते शङ्खशब्दं तुमुलं निशम्य ध्वजस्य शब्दं च ततोऽन्तरिक्षे। गाण्डीवशब्देन मुहुर्मुहुस्ते भीता ययुः सर्वधनं विहाय
Hearing the tumultuous sound of the conch and the banners in the sky, and the repeated twang of Gandiva, they, terrified, fled, abandoning all their wealth.
तानर्जुनो दूरतरं विभज्य धनं च सर्वं निखिलं निवर्त्य । आपृच्छ्य तान्दूरमनुप्रयात्वा धनञ्जयस्तत्र कुरून्महात्मा। गुरूंश्च सर्वानभिवाद्य बाणैर्न्यवर्ततोदग्रमनाः शरैः सह
Arjuna, separating them from afar and recovering all the wealth, took leave of them and, having gone a distance, the great-souled Dhananjaya saluted all the Kurus and his elders, and then, with a fierce mind, turned back with his arrows.
पितामहं शान्तनवं महात्मा द्वाभ्यां शराभ्यामभिवाद्य वीरः। द्रोणं कृपं चैव कुरूंश्च मान्याञ्शरैश्च सर्वानभिवाद्य सङ्ख्ये। दुर्योधनस्योत्तमरत्नचित्रं चिच्छेद पार्थो मकुटं शरौघैः
The great-souled hero saluted Bhishma, son of Shantanu, with two arrows; and in the battle, he honored Drona, Kripa, and all the respected Kurus with arrows, and then Partha cut off Duryodhana's splendid jeweled crown with a shower of arrows.
अराजवंशस्य किमर्थमेतन्नित्यं न धार्यं मकुटं त्वयेति। संपातितं भूमितले सरत्नं प्रीतस्तुतो मात्स्यसुतो बभूव
"Why do you always wear this crown, unworthy of one outside the royal line?" Thus, the gem-studded crown was knocked to the ground, and the son of Matsya rejoiced greatly.
धनञ्जयं नागमिव प्रभिन्नं विजित्य शत्रून्परिवर्तमानम्। गास्ता विजित्याभिमुखं प्रयान्तं न शक्नुवन्तः कुरवः प्रयाताः
Having conquered his enemies, Dhananjaya, like a broken serpent, turned back, driving the cows ahead; the Kurus, unable to stop him as he advanced, retreated.
धनञ्जयं सिंहमिवात्तशस्त्रं गा वै विजित्याभिमुखं प्रयान्तम् । उदीक्षितुं पार्थिवास्ते न शेकुर्यथैव मध्याह्नगतं हि सूर्यम्
Like a lion armed with weapons, Dhananjaya, having conquered the cows, advanced; the kings could not bear to look at him, just as one cannot gaze at the midday sun.
रक्तानि वासांसि च तानि गृह्य रणोत्कटो नाग इव प्रभिन्नः। जित्वा च वैराटिमुवाच पार्थः प्रहृष्टरूपो रथिनां वरिष्ठः
Taking those blood-stained garments, fierce in battle like a broken elephant, Partha, the best of charioteers, having won, joyfully spoke to the prince of the Matsyas.
आवर्तयाश्वान्पशवो जितास्ते याताः परे प्रैहि पुरं प्रहृष्टः । उद्धुष्यतां ते विजयोऽद्य शीघ्रं गात्रं तु ते सेवतु माल्यगन्धः । माता तु ते नन्दतु बान्धवाश्च त्वामद्य दृष्ट्वा समुदीर्णहर्षम्
"Turn the horses back; the cattle are won and the enemy has fled. Go quickly to the city, rejoice in your victory today, let your body be adorned with garlands and fragrance. Let your mother and relatives rejoice today, seeing you filled with great joy."
ततो विजित्य संग्रामे कुरुगोवृषभेक्षणः। समानयामास तदा विराटस्य धनं महत्
Then, having conquered in battle, he who resembled a bull among the Kurus gathered together the great wealth of Virata.
मतषु च प्रभग्नेषु धार्तराष्ट्रेषु सर्वशः। वनान्निष्क्रम्य गहनाद्बहवः कुरुसैनिकाः । भयात्संत्रस्तमनसः समाजग्मुस्ततस्ततः
When the sons of Dhritarashtra were slain and routed, many Kuru soldiers, terrified and distraught, emerged from the dense forest and gathered here and there.
मुक्तकेशाः प्रदृश्यन्ते स्थिताः प्राञ्जलयस्तदा। क्षुत्पिणसापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतसः । ऊचुः प्राञ्जलयः सर्वे पार्थ किं करवामहे
Their hair disheveled, standing with joined palms, exhausted by hunger and fatigue, bewildered and far from home, they all said with folded hands, "O Partha, what shall we do?"
प्राणानन्तर्मनोयातान्प्रयाचिष्यामहे वयम्। वयं चार्जुन ते दासा ह्यनुरक्ष्या ह्यनाथकाः
"Our lives, minds, and hearts are in your hands; we are your servants, Arjuna. Protect us, for we are helpless."
अनाथान्दुःखितान्दीनान्कृशान्वृद्धान्पराजितान्। न्यस्तशस्त्रान्निराशांश्च नाहं हन्मि कृताञ्जलीन्
"I do not kill those who are helpless, suffering, destitute, emaciated, old, defeated, who have laid down their arms, and who are hopeless, especially when they approach me with joined palms."
भवन्तो यान्तु विस्रब्धा निर्भया अमृता यथा। मम पादरजोलक्ष्म्या जीवन्तु सुचिरं भुवि
Go forth, all of you, confident and unafraid, as if immortal; may you live long upon the earth, blessed by the dust of my feet.
तस्य तामभयां वाचं श्रुत्वा योधाः समागताः । आयुः कीर्तियशोभिस्ते तमाशीर्भिरवर्धयन्
Hearing his words of reassurance, the assembled warriors honored him with blessings, wishing him long life, fame, and glory.
ततो निवृत्ताः कुरवो यग्नाश्च दिवमास्थिताः । प्रयाताः सर्वतस्तत्र नमस्कृत्य धनञ्जयम्
Then the Kauravas withdrew, and the sacrificial fires ascended to heaven; all those present there departed, having bowed to Dhananjaya.
एवं दत्ताभयास्तेन ततो याताः कुरून्प्रति
Thus, having granted them safety, he let them go, and they returned toward the Kauravas.
स कर्म कृत्वा परमार्यकर्मा निहत्य शत्रून्द्विषतां निहन्ता। यातो महामेघ इवातपान्ते विद्राव्य पार्थः कुरुसैन्यमेकः
Having accomplished this noble deed, slaying the enemies and scattering the hostile army, Partha departed alone, like a great cloud dispersing after the heat.
तं मात्स्यपुत्रं द्विषतां निहन्ता वचोऽब्रवीत्संपरिगृह्य राजन्
Then, having vanquished his foes, he addressed the Matsya prince with these words, O King.
पितुः सकाशे तव तात सर्वे वसन्ति पार्था विदितं त्वयेति। तान्मास्म शंसीर्नगरं प्रविश्य भीतः प्रणश्येत्स च मत्स्यराजः
All the Parthas are staying with your father, O prince, as you know; do not reveal this upon entering the city, lest the Matsya king, in fear, be destroyed.
मया जिता सा ध्वजिनी कुरूणां मया हि गावो विजिता द्विषद्भ्यः । एवं तु कामं नगरं प्रविश्य त्वमात्मना कर्म कृतं ब्रवीहि
It is I who have conquered that Kuru army, and I who have won back the cows from the enemy; so, enter the city as you wish and declare the deed as your own.
यत्ते कृतं कर्म न वारणीयं तत्कर्म कर्तुं मम नास्ति शक्तिः। न त्वां प्रवक्ष्यामि पितुः सकाशे यावन्न मां वक्ष्यसि सव्यसाचिन्
What you have done cannot be denied, but I do not have the power to claim that deed; nor will I speak of you before your father until you yourself tell me, Savyasacin.
स शत्रुसेनां तरसा विजित्य आच्छिद्य सर्वं तु धनं कुरूणाम्। श्मशानमागम्य पुनः शमीं तामभ्येत्य तस्थौ शरविक्षताङ्गः
Having swiftly defeated the enemy army and seized all the Kuru wealth, he returned to the cremation ground, approached the shami tree again, and stood there, his body wounded by arrows.
ततः स वह्निप्रतिमो महाकपिः सहैव भूतैर्दिवमुत्पपात। तथा च माया विहिता बभूव सा ध्वजं च सिंहं युयुजे रथे पुनः
Then, like fire, the great monkey, along with the spirits, ascended to heaven; by magic, the banner and the lion were again joined to the chariot.
निधाय तच्चायुधमाजिमर्दनः कुरूत्तमानामिषुधीन्ध्वजांस्तथा। प्रायात्स मात्स्यो नगरं प्रवेष्टुं किरीटिना सारथिना महात्मा
Having set down his weapons, the crusher of foes, and the banners of the foremost Kurus, the noble Matsya prince set out to enter the city, with the diademed one as his charioteer.
पार्थश्च कृत्वा परमार्यकर्म निहत्य शत्रून्द्विषतां निहन्ता। विधाय भूयश्च तथैव वेषं जग्राह रश्मीन्पुनरुत्तरस्य। बृहन्नलारूपमथो विधाय प्रायात्य मात्स्यो नगरं प्रवेष्टुम्
Partha, having performed this most noble deed and slain the enemies, once again assumed his former disguise, took up the reins from Uttara, and, adopting the form of Brihannala, set out to enter the Matsya city.
ततो निवृत्ताः कुरवः प्रभग्नाः शममास्थिताः । परस्परमवेक्ष्यैव जग्मुस्ते हृतवाससः
Then the Kauravas, defeated and stripped of their garments, withdrew and made peace, glancing at one another as they departed.
पन्थानमुपसंगम्य फल्गुनो वाक्यमब्रवीत्। राजपुत्र प्रपद्यस्व धनानीमानि सर्वशः। गोकुलानि महाबाहो वीरगोपालकैः सह
Coming to the road, Phalguna spoke: 'Prince, take possession of all this wealth and these herds, mighty-armed one, along with the brave cowherds.'
ततोऽपराह्णे यास्यामो विराटनगरं प्रति। आश्वास्य पाययित्वा च परिप्लाव्य च वाजिनः
'In the afternoon we will proceed toward the city of Virata, after resting, watering, and refreshing the horses.'
