Then Partha, seeing the others stupefied, recalled Uttara's message and said to the Matsya prince, 'Drive the horses out while the Kurus are still bewildered.'
O best of men, take the pure white garments of the teachers Sharadvat and Kripa, the brilliant yellow garment of Karna, and the blue garments of Drona and the king.
I believe Bhishma alone retains awareness; he knows how to counter my weapon. Guide the horses to the left of his chariot, for thus you must proceed while the others remain confused.
Then the great-souled son of Virata, releasing the reins, leapt from the chariot, gathered the wondrously colored garments of the great chariot-warriors.
He took large Chinese silks, fine cloths, various beautiful brocades, and the jeweled necklaces, ornaments, and gold coins of the kings, O Marisha.
He took the ruby-studded armlets and bracelets, other jeweled ornaments of the kings, and, gathering the garments of the great chariot-warriors, swiftly climbed back onto the chariot.
Partha, placing his finger on his nose, laughed with a smiling heart at the kings, all rendered unconscious and resembling the effects of the bewildering weapon.
Then the son of Virata pursued the four splendid horses with golden harness, and they carried Arjuna through the midst of the enemy ranks, shining white.
As the foremost man advanced, Bhishma, swift in action, struck him with arrows; but Arjuna killed Bhishma's horses and pierced Bhishma with ten sharp shafts.
Then Arjuna, leaving Bhishma in battle and having wounded his charioteer, stood free in the midst of the chariot array, like the thousand-rayed sun splitting Rahu.
Regaining awareness, the foremost man, seeing Partha like mighty Indra released from battle, the son of Dhritarashtra quickly spoke.
He said, 'Somehow your enemy has escaped; bind him so that he does not get away.' Shantanu's son laughed and replied, 'Where has your wisdom and valor gone?'
Having attained supreme calm, you stood there, abandoning your arrows and your splendid bow; but Bibhatsu would never commit cruelty, nor is his mind inclined toward evil.
He would not abandon righteousness even for the sake of heaven; therefore none were slain in this battle. Quickly pursue the Kurus, O mighty one, and let Partha return victorious with the cows.
You have all been bewildered by the bewildering weapon and do not know of the theft of the wealth. I see the garments and ornaments of the kings gathered by the son of Virata.
While all the kings were stupefied, if he had wished, he could have killed them; but the righteous hero, the son of the mighty, did not slay you out of virtue.
By fortune, O Partha, you were not slain, though you agreed to the truce of the Kurus. Now, you all, along with your remaining soldiers, go to Hastinapura, for those who survived have been killed.
Hearing these words, which were for his own good, from the grandsire, Duryodhana praised him, but, filled with rage and desire for battle, the king sighed and remained silent.
All, having heard Bhishma's words and seeing Dhananjaya's fire growing, resolved only to retreat, seeking to protect Duryodhana.
Then Dhananjaya, the mighty hero and foremost among all Kurus, joyfully addressed those departing, and for a moment followed them, filling the world with the sound of Gandiva.
Seeing the enemy ranks scattered, their banners and bows broken, Partha, armed with Gandiva, laughed and powerfully blew his conch among the Kurus.
Hearing the tumultuous sound of the conch and the banners in the sky, and the repeated twang of Gandiva, they, terrified, fled, abandoning all their wealth.
Arjuna, separating them from afar and recovering all the wealth, took leave of them and, having gone a distance, the great-souled Dhananjaya saluted all the Kurus and his elders, and then, with a fierce mind, turned back with his arrows.
The great-souled hero saluted Bhishma, son of Shantanu, with two arrows; and in the battle, he honored Drona, Kripa, and all the respected Kurus with arrows, and then Partha cut off Duryodhana's splendid jeweled crown with a shower of arrows.
"Why do you always wear this crown, unworthy of one outside the royal line?" Thus, the gem-studded crown was knocked to the ground, and the son of Matsya rejoiced greatly.
Having conquered his enemies, Dhananjaya, like a broken serpent, turned back, driving the cows ahead; the Kurus, unable to stop him as he advanced, retreated.
Like a lion armed with weapons, Dhananjaya, having conquered the cows, advanced; the kings could not bear to look at him, just as one cannot gaze at the midday sun.
Taking those blood-stained garments, fierce in battle like a broken elephant, Partha, the best of charioteers, having won, joyfully spoke to the prince of the Matsyas.
"Turn the horses back; the cattle are won and the enemy has fled. Go quickly to the city, rejoice in your victory today, let your body be adorned with garlands and fragrance. Let your mother and relatives rejoice today, seeing you filled with great joy."
Then, having conquered in battle, he who resembled a bull among the Kurus gathered together the great wealth of Virata.
