युधिष्ठिरस्यास्मि निदेशकारी पार्थस्तृतीयो युधि च स्थिरोस्मि। तदर्थमावृत्य मुखं प्रयच्छनरेन्द्रवृत्तं स्मर धार्तराष्ट्रः
I am the one who carries out Yudhishthira's commands; I am Partha, steadfast in battle as the third among them. Therefore, as I turn my face toward you, remember the conduct of kings, O son of Dhritarashtra.
मोघं तवैतद्भुवि नामधेयं दुर्योधनेतीह कृतं पुरस्तात्। दुर्योधनस्त्वं प्रथितोसि नाम्ना सुयोधनः सन्निकृतिप्रधानः
Your name, Duryodhana, has been made in vain upon this earth; you are renowned as Duryodhana, but in truth you are Suyodhana, foremost in gathering forces.
न ते पुरस्तादथ पृष्ठतो वा पश्यामि दुर्योधन रक्षितारम्। परीप्स युद्धेन कुरुप्रवीर प्राणान्मया बाणबलाभितप्तान्
I see no protector for you, Duryodhana, neither before nor behind; seek to preserve your life in battle, O foremost of Kurus, scorched by the force of my arrows.
आहूयमानस्तु स तेन सङ्ख्ये महात्मना वै धृ निवर्तितश्चापि गिराङ्कुशेन गजो मदोन्मत्त इवाङ्कुशेन
Thus summoned in battle by that great-souled one, he was restrained by words sharp as a goad, like an elephant maddened by rut held back by the hook.
सोमृष्यमाणो वचसाऽभिमृष्टो महारथेनातिरथस्तरस्वी । ततः स पर्याववृते रथेन भोगी यथा पादतलाभिमृष्टः
Stung by those words, the swift and mighty chariot-warrior could not endure it; then, like a serpent struck on the head, he turned his chariot around.
ततो दुर्योधनः क्रुद्धो विक्षिपन्धनुरुत्तमम्। धृतिं कृत्वा सुविपुलां प्रत्युवाच पऩञ्जयम्
Then Duryodhana, enraged, brandishing his excellent bow, gathered his great resolve and replied to Paranjaya.
सोहमिन्द्रादभिक्रुद्धान्न बिभेमीह भारत । भुक्त्वा सुविपुलं राज्यं वित्तानि च सुखानि च। किमर्थं युद्धसमये पलापिष्ये नरोत्तम
I do not fear even the wrathful Indra here, O Bharata; having enjoyed vast kingdoms, wealth, and pleasures, why should I flee at the time of battle, O best of men?
एवमुक्त्वा महाराजः प्रत्ययुध्यत भारत। संन्यवर्तत शीघ्राश्वस्तोत्रार्दित इव द्विपः
Having spoken thus, the king engaged in battle, O Bharata, turning swiftly like an elephant tormented by the goads of fast horses.
आक्रान्तभोगस्तेजस्वी धनुर्वक्र इवोरगः । रथं रथेन संगम्य योधयामास पाण्डवम्
With his energy aroused, like a serpent with raised hood, he joined his chariot with that of the Pandava and began to fight.
तं प्रेक्ष्य कर्णः परिवर्तमानं निवृत्य संस्तम्भितसर्वगात्रम् । दुर्योधनं दक्षिणतोऽन्वरक्षत्पार्थान्महाबाहुरधिज्यधन्वा
Seeing him turning about, Karna, restraining all his limbs, followed Duryodhana on the right, bow strung, mighty-armed, protecting him from the Pandavas.
गान्धारराजः शकुनिर्निवृत्य द्रौणिश्च सर्वास्त्रविदां वरिष्ठः । ररक्षतुः कौरवमभ्युपेत्य पार्थान्नृवीरौ युधि सव्यतश्च
The king of Gandhara, Shakuni, and Drona's son, foremost among those skilled in weapons, turned back and, approaching, protected the Kaurava on the left in battle from the Pandava heroes.
भीष्मस्ततः शान्तनवो विवृत्य हिरण्यकक्ष्यांस्त्वरया तुरंगान्। दुर्योधनं पश्चिमतो ररक्ष पार्थान्महाबाहुरधिज्यधन्वा
Then Bhishma, son of Shantanu, turning his golden-girdled horses with speed, protected Duryodhana from the rear, bow strung, mighty-armed, against the Pandavas.
द्रोणः कृपश्चैव विविंशतिश्च दुःशासनश्चैव निवृत्य शीघ्रम्। सर्वे पुरस्तात्प्रणिधाय बाणान्दुर्योधनार्थं त्वरिताऽभ्युपेयुः
Drona, Kripa, Vivimsati, and Duhshasana quickly turned back, all taking up their arrows, and eagerly advanced in front for Duryodhana's sake.
सर्वाण्यनीकानि निवर्तितानि संप्रेक्ष्य पूर्णौघनिभानि पार्थः । हंसो महामेघमिवापतन्तं धनञ्जयः प्रत्यपतत्तरस्वी
Seeing all the divisions turning back, dense as full floods, Dhananjaya, swift as a swan meeting a great cloud, advanced to meet them.
ते सर्वतः संपरिवार्य पार्थमस्त्राणि दिव्यानि समाददानाः । ववर्षुरभ्येत्य शरैः समग्रैर्मेघा यथा भूधरमम्बुवेगैः
Surrounding Partha on all sides, they took up divine weapons and, approaching, showered him with arrows from all directions, like clouds pouring torrents on a mountain.
ततोऽस्रमस्त्रेण निवार्य तेषां गाण्डीवधन्वा कुरुपुङ्गवानाम्। संमोहनं शत्रुसहोऽन्यदस्त्रं प्रादुश्चकारैन्द्रमवारणीयम्
Then, repelling their weapons with his own, Gandiva-bowman Arjuna released the irresistible Indra weapon, the bewildering missile, against the foremost Kuru warriors.
ततो दिशश्चानुदिशो निवार्य शरैः सुघोरैर्निशितैः सुपुङ्खैः। गाण्डीवशब्देन मनांसि तेषां महाबलं प्रवथयांचकार
Then, blocking all directions and quarters with sharp, well-feathered, terrifying arrows, the sound of Gandiva shook the minds of those mighty warriors.
ततः पुनर्भीमरवं निगृह्य दोर्भ्यां महाशङ्खमुदारघोषम्। व्यनादयन्संप्रदिशो दिशः खं भुवं च पार्थो द्विषतां निहन्ता
Then, grasping the great conch with both arms, suppressing the roar of Bhima, Partha, destroyer of foes, filled all directions, quarters, the sky, and the earth with its deep, resounding note.
संमोहनास्त्रप्रभवैः शरौघैर्विनष्टदेहाश्च निपत्य योधाः । निःसत्ववेगाः कुरुराजसैन्याः कुडयोपमास्तस्थुरनीहमानाः
By the power of the bewildering weapon, the warriors fell, their bodies destroyed by showers of arrows; the army of the Kuru king, drained of strength and momentum, stood motionless like logs, unable to act.
ते शङ्खनादेन कुरुप्रवीराः संमोहिताः पार्थसमीरितेन । उत्सृज्य चापानि दुरासदानि सर्वे तदा मोहपरा बभूवुः
Those mighty Kurus, bewildered by the blast of Partha's conch, abandoned their formidable bows and all became absorbed in confusion.
ततो विसंज्ञानि परेषु पार्थः संस्मृत्य संदेशमथोत्तरायाः । निर्याहि वाहादिति मात्स्यपुत्रमुवाच यावत्कुरवो विसंज्ञाः
Then Partha, seeing the others stupefied, recalled Uttara's message and said to the Matsya prince, 'Drive the horses out while the Kurus are still bewildered.'
आचार्यशारद्वतयोः सुशुक्ले कर्णस्य पीतं रुचिरं च वस्त्रम्। द्रौणेश्च राज्ञश्च तथैव नीले वस्त्रे समादत्स्व नरप्रवीर
O best of men, take the pure white garments of the teachers Sharadvat and Kripa, the brilliant yellow garment of Karna, and the blue garments of Drona and the king.
भीष्मस्य संज्ञां तु तथैव मन्ये जानाति मेऽस्त्रप्रतिघातमेषः। एतस्य वाहान्कुरु सव्यतस्त्वमेवं प्रयातव्यममूढसंज्ञैः
I believe Bhishma alone retains awareness; he knows how to counter my weapon. Guide the horses to the left of his chariot, for thus you must proceed while the others remain confused.
रश्मीन्समुत्सृज्य ततो महात्मा रथादवप्लुत्य विराटपुत्रः । वस्त्राण्युपादाय महारथानां नानाविधान्यद्भुतवर्णकानि
Then the great-souled son of Virata, releasing the reins, leapt from the chariot, gathered the wondrously colored garments of the great chariot-warriors.
महान्ति चीनांशुदुकूलकानि पट्टांशुकानि विविधानि मनोज्ञकानि । हारांश्च राज्ञां मणिभूषणानि सुवर्णनिष्काभरणानि मारिष
He took large Chinese silks, fine cloths, various beautiful brocades, and the jeweled necklaces, ornaments, and gold coins of the kings, O Marisha.
माणिक्यबाह्वङ्गदकङ्कणानि अन्यानि राज्ञां मणिभूषणानि। वस्त्राण्युपादाय महारथानां तूर्णं पुनः खं रथमारुरोह
He took the ruby-studded armlets and bracelets, other jeweled ornaments of the kings, and, gathering the garments of the great chariot-warriors, swiftly climbed back onto the chariot.
राज्ञश्च सर्वान्कृतसंनिकाशान्संमोहनास्त्रेण विसंज्ञकल्पान् । नासाग्रविन्यस्तकराङ्गुलीकः पार्थो जहास स्मयमानचेताः
Partha, placing his finger on his nose, laughed with a smiling heart at the kings, all rendered unconscious and resembling the effects of the bewildering weapon.
ततोऽन्वशात्तांश्चतुरः सदश्वान्पुत्रो विराटस्य हिरण्यकक्ष्यान् । ते तद्व्यतीयुर्द्विषतामनीकं श्वेता वहन्तोऽर्जुनमाजिमध्यात्
Then the son of Virata pursued the four splendid horses with golden harness, and they carried Arjuna through the midst of the enemy ranks, shining white.
तथा प्रयान्तं पुरुषप्रवीरं भीष्मः शरैरभ्यहनत्तरस्वी। स चापि भीष्मस्य हयान्निहत्य विव्याध भीष्मं दशभिः पृषत्कैः
As the foremost man advanced, Bhishma, swift in action, struck him with arrows; but Arjuna killed Bhishma's horses and pierced Bhishma with ten sharp shafts.
ततोऽर्जुनो भीष्ममपास्य युद्धे विद्ध्वाऽस्य यन्तारमरिष्टधन्वा। तस्थौ विमुक्तो रथवृन्दमध्याद्राहुं विदार्येव सहस्ररश्मिः
Then Arjuna, leaving Bhishma in battle and having wounded his charioteer, stood free in the midst of the chariot array, like the thousand-rayed sun splitting Rahu.
