पार्थेन सृष्टः स तु गृध्रपत्रो ह्यापुङ्खदेशं प्रविवेश नागम्। विदार्य शैलप्रवरप्रकाशं यथाऽशनिः पर्वतमिन्द्रसृष्टः
Shot by Partha, the vulture-feathered arrow entered the elephant’s head, tearing through its shining mountain-like skull like Indra’s thunderbolt splitting a peak.
शरप्रतप्तः स तु नागराजः प्रवेपिताङ्गो व्यथितान्तरात्मा। संसीदमानो निपपात भूमौ वज्राहतं शृङ्गमिवाचलस्य
Scorched by arrows, the elephant king trembled, his body shaken and spirit distressed; faltering, he fell to the ground like a mountain’s peak struck by a thunderbolt.
निपातिते दन्तिवरे पृथिव्यां त्रासाद्विकर्णः सहसाऽवतीर्य । तूर्णं पदान्यष्टशतानि गत्वा विविंशतेः स्यन्दनमारुरोह
When the great elephant was struck down to the ground, Vikarṇa, seized by fear, swiftly dismounted and, after quickly running eight hundred paces, climbed onto Vivimśati’s chariot.
निहत्य नागं तु शरेण तेन वज्रोपमेनाद्रिवरप्रकाशम्। तथाविधेनैव शरेण पार्थो दुर्योधनं वक्षसि निर्बिभेद
Having slain the elephant with that arrow, which shone like a thunderbolt and a best of mountains, Pārtha likewise pierced Duryodhana in the chest with such an arrow.
हते गजे राजनि चैव भिन्ने भग्ने विकर्णे च सपादरक्षे । गाण्डीवमुक्तैर्विशिखैः प्रभिन्नास्ते योधमुख्याः सहसा प्रजग्मुः
With the elephant slain, the king wounded, and Vikarṇa, with his guards, routed, the foremost warriors, struck by arrows released from Gāṇḍīva, suddenly fled.
दृष्ट्वैव बाणेन हतं च नागं योधांश्च सर्वान्नृपतिर्निरीक्ष्य। रथं समावृत्य कुरग्नवीरो रणात्प्रदुद्राव यतो न पार्थः
Seeing the elephant struck down by an arrow and all the warriors routed, the king, surrounded on his chariot, fled the battle, away from Pārtha, that hero of the Kurus.
तं भीतरूपं त्वरितं व्रजन्तं दुर्योधनं शत्रुगणावमर्दी । अन्वाह्वयद्योद्धुमनाः किरीटी बाणाभिविद्धं रुधिरं वमन्तम्
Beholding Duryodhana, terrified and hastening away—he who crushes hosts of enemies—the diademed Arjuna, eager for battle, called out to him, as he, pierced by arrows and bleeding, fled.
तस्मिन्महेष्वासवरेऽतिविद्धे धनञ्जयेनाप्रतिमेन युद्धे। सर्वाणि सैन्यानि भयार्दितानि त्रासं ययुः पार्थमुदीक्ष्य तानि
When that foremost wielder of great bows was grievously wounded in battle by Dhanañjaya, all the armies, struck with fear at the sight of Pārtha, were seized by terror.
ततस्तु ते शान्तिपराश्च सर्वे दृष्ट्वाऽर्जुनं नागमिव प्रभिन्नम्। उच्चैर्नदन्तं बलमत्तमाजौ मध्ये स्थितं सिंहमिवर्षभाणाम्
Then, seeing Arjuna, like a broken elephant, roaring loudly in the midst of battle, standing like a lion among bulls, all those warriors, intent on peace, were filled with fear.
गाण्डीवशब्देन तु पाण्डवस्य योधा निपेतुः सहसा रथेभ्यः। भयार्दिताः पार्थशराभितप्ताः सिंहाभिपन्ना इव वारणेन्द्राः
At the sound of Pāṇḍava’s Gāṇḍīva, the warriors suddenly leapt from their chariots, scorched by Pārtha’s arrows and overwhelmed by fear, like lordly elephants attacked by a lion.
संरक्तनेत्रः पुनरिन्द्रकर्मा वैकर्तनं द्वादशभिः पृषत्कैः। वित्रास्य तेषां द्रवतां समैक्षद्दुःशासनं चैकरथेन पार्थः
With bloodshot eyes, Arjuna, the accomplisher of Indra’s deeds, terrified the fleeing warriors by striking Karṇa with twelve sharp arrows and confronting Duḥśāsana with a single chariot.
कर्णोऽब्रवीत्पार्थशराभितप्तो दुर्योधनं दुष्प्रसहं च दृष्ट्वा । दृष्टोऽर्जुनोऽयं प्रतियाम शीघ्रं श्रेयो विधास्याम इतो गतेन
Karṇa, scorched by Pārtha’s arrows, seeing Duryodhana and Duḥśāsana—difficult to overcome—said: ‘Here is Arjuna! Let us quickly retreat; we will devise a better plan once we have withdrawn.’
मन्ये त्वया तात कृतं च कार्यं यदर्जुनोऽस्माभिरिहाद्य दृष्टः । भूयो वनं गच्छतु सव्यसाची पश्यामि पूर्णं समयं न तेषाम्
I believe, O prince, that you have accomplished your task, for today we have seen Arjuna here. Let Savyasācin return again to the forest; I see their term is not yet complete.
शरार्दितास्ते युधि पाण्डवेन प्रससुरन्योन्यमथाह्वयन्तः। कर्णोऽब्रवीदापतत्येष जिष्णुर्दुर्योधनं संपरिवार्य यामः
Wounded in battle by the Pāṇḍava’s arrows, they breathed heavily, challenging one another. Karṇa said, ‘Here comes Jishnu! Let us surround Duryodhana and withdraw.’
सर्वास्त्रविद्वारणयूथपाभः काले प्रहर्ता युधि शात्रवाणाम्। अयं च पार्थः पुनरागतो नो मूलं च रक्ष्यं भरतर्षभाणाम्
He, master of all weapons, like a leader of elephant herds, strikes at the right moment in battle. Now Pārtha has returned; we must protect the root of the Bharata chiefs.
समीक्ष्य पार्थं तरसाऽऽपतन्तं दुर्योधनः कालमिवात्तशस्त्रम् । भयार्तरूपः शरणं प्रपेदे द्रोणं च कर्णं च कृपं च भीष्मम्
Seeing Pārtha charging swiftly, like Death armed with weapons, Duryodhana, terrified, sought refuge with Droṇa, Karṇa, Kṛpa, and Bhīṣma.
तं भीतरूपं शरणं व्रजन्तं दुर्योधनं शत्रुसहो निषङ्गी। इत्यब्रवीत्प्रीतमनाः किरीटी बाणाभितप्तं रुधिरं वमन्तम्
Seeing Duryodhana, terrified and seeking refuge, the enemy-subduing, sword-bearing Arjuna, his mind pleased, spoke thus to him, as he, pierced by arrows and bleeding, fled.
विहाय कीर्तिं च यशश्च लोके युद्धात्परावृत्य पलायसे किम्। न नन्दयिष्यन्ति तवाहतानि तूर्याणि युद्धादवरोपितस्य
Abandoning fame and glory in the world, why do you turn away from battle and flee? The drums will not sound in your honor when you are cast down from the fight.
न भोक्ष्यसे सोऽद्य महीं समग्रां यानानि वस्त्राण्यथ भोजनानि। कल्याणगन्धीनि च चन्दनानि युद्धात्परावृत्य तु भोक्ष्यसे किम् । सुवर्णमाल्यानि च कुण्डलानि हारांश्च वैडूर्यकृतोपधानान्
Today you shall not enjoy the whole earth, nor chariots, garments, or food; nor the finest sandalwood, fragrant and auspicious, nor golden garlands, earrings, or necklaces set with beryl, if you turn away from battle.
च्युतरा युद्धान्न तु शङ्खशब्दास्तथा भविष्यन्ति तवाद्य पाप। न भोगहेतोर्वरचन्दनं च स्त्रियश्च मुख्या मधुरप्रलापाः । युद्धात्प्रयातस्य नरेन्द्रसूनो परे च लोके फलिता न चेह
If you flee the battle, O wicked one, the sound of conchs will not resound for you today. Not for the sake of enjoyment will you have the best sandalwood, noble women with sweet words, or pleasures; for the son of the king who departs from battle, there is no fruit in this world or the next.
युधिष्ठिरस्यास्मि निदेशकारी पार्थस्तृतीयो युधि च स्थिरोस्मि। तदर्थमावृत्य मुखं प्रयच्छनरेन्द्रवृत्तं स्मर धार्तराष्ट्रः
I am the one who carries out Yudhishthira's commands; I am Partha, steadfast in battle as the third among them. Therefore, as I turn my face toward you, remember the conduct of kings, O son of Dhritarashtra.
मोघं तवैतद्भुवि नामधेयं दुर्योधनेतीह कृतं पुरस्तात्। दुर्योधनस्त्वं प्रथितोसि नाम्ना सुयोधनः सन्निकृतिप्रधानः
Your name, Duryodhana, has been made in vain upon this earth; you are renowned as Duryodhana, but in truth you are Suyodhana, foremost in gathering forces.
न ते पुरस्तादथ पृष्ठतो वा पश्यामि दुर्योधन रक्षितारम्। परीप्स युद्धेन कुरुप्रवीर प्राणान्मया बाणबलाभितप्तान्
I see no protector for you, Duryodhana, neither before nor behind; seek to preserve your life in battle, O foremost of Kurus, scorched by the force of my arrows.
आहूयमानस्तु स तेन सङ्ख्ये महात्मना वै धृ निवर्तितश्चापि गिराङ्कुशेन गजो मदोन्मत्त इवाङ्कुशेन
Thus summoned in battle by that great-souled one, he was restrained by words sharp as a goad, like an elephant maddened by rut held back by the hook.
सोमृष्यमाणो वचसाऽभिमृष्टो महारथेनातिरथस्तरस्वी । ततः स पर्याववृते रथेन भोगी यथा पादतलाभिमृष्टः
Stung by those words, the swift and mighty chariot-warrior could not endure it; then, like a serpent struck on the head, he turned his chariot around.
ततो दुर्योधनः क्रुद्धो विक्षिपन्धनुरुत्तमम्। धृतिं कृत्वा सुविपुलां प्रत्युवाच पऩञ्जयम्
Then Duryodhana, enraged, brandishing his excellent bow, gathered his great resolve and replied to Paranjaya.
सोहमिन्द्रादभिक्रुद्धान्न बिभेमीह भारत । भुक्त्वा सुविपुलं राज्यं वित्तानि च सुखानि च। किमर्थं युद्धसमये पलापिष्ये नरोत्तम
I do not fear even the wrathful Indra here, O Bharata; having enjoyed vast kingdoms, wealth, and pleasures, why should I flee at the time of battle, O best of men?
एवमुक्त्वा महाराजः प्रत्ययुध्यत भारत। संन्यवर्तत शीघ्राश्वस्तोत्रार्दित इव द्विपः
Having spoken thus, the king engaged in battle, O Bharata, turning swiftly like an elephant tormented by the goads of fast horses.
आक्रान्तभोगस्तेजस्वी धनुर्वक्र इवोरगः । रथं रथेन संगम्य योधयामास पाण्डवम्
With his energy aroused, like a serpent with raised hood, he joined his chariot with that of the Pandava and began to fight.
तं प्रेक्ष्य कर्णः परिवर्तमानं निवृत्य संस्तम्भितसर्वगात्रम् । दुर्योधनं दक्षिणतोऽन्वरक्षत्पार्थान्महाबाहुरधिज्यधन्वा
Seeing him turning about, Karna, restraining all his limbs, followed Duryodhana on the right, bow strung, mighty-armed, protecting him from the Pandavas.
