His eyes were red and deep-set, his head and neck short and thick, his belly and chest closely joined, his face broad and striking.
With all his strength and power, as if shaking the three worlds, and accompanied by the ten winds, the destroyer of foes blew the conch.
The sound of his conch was heard, deep and thunderous like a storm cloud.
By the sound of that conch, the roar of the bowstring, the cry of the monkey, and the rumble of the chariot wheels, the son of Pāka caused terrible fear among all living beings.
At the sound of Partha's conch from his lips, the horses fell to the ground, and Uttara, terrified, sat down in the chariot.
Then Partha, the scorcher of foes, took up the reins of the horses, and in the chariot shone like the sun on northern Meru.
Frightened by the conch's blast and stunned by the twang of the bowstring, Arjuna embraced Uttara and comforted him.
"Do not fear, foremost of princes; you are a Kshatriya, scorcher of foes. How, O tiger among men, do you despair in the midst of enemies?"
"You have heard the sounds of conches and drums in full, and the trumpeting of elephants in battle arrays, always."
"So how are you frightened by this conch sound, looking distraught and terrified like an ordinary man?"
"I have always heard the sounds of conches and drums, and the trumpeting of elephants standing in battle formations."
"Never before have I heard such conch sounds; nor have I ever seen such a banner, nor heard such a bow's twang anywhere."
"By the sound of this conch, the twang of the bow, the unearthly cries, the sighs of spirits, and the rumble of chariot wheels, my mind is greatly bewildered."
"All directions seem confused, my heart trembles; all directions are hidden by the banner, and I cannot see. The sound of Gandiva has deafened my ears."
Again and again he looked at the banner, the conch, and the bow; the king of the Matsyas, his mind bewildered, gazed at Arjuna.
Then, after a moment had passed, Partha spoke to Uttara.
Steady yourself, mighty-armed one, regain your senses and composure. Withdraw the chariot to a secluded spot, dismount, and firmly hold the reins. I will sound the conch again.
Having spoken thus, the great-armed, left-handed archer, scorcher of foes, then blew his conch, making a sound as if splitting mountains, echoing through caves, hills, and all directions.
He made the bowstring and palm resound, bewildering all beings. Uttara, meanwhile, hid himself and sat down in the chariot. Dhananjaya again reassured him.
At the sound of that conch, the noise of the chariot wheels, and the twang of Gandiva, the earth trembled.
Then Drona, son of Bharadvaja, foremost among all wielders of weapons, looked at the king Duryodhana and spoke.
Just as the roar of the chariot and the blast of the conch are heard, and as the earth quakes—no one but Savyasacin could do this.
This is an ominous sign for us, O king; I do not foresee victory for our army, scorcher of foes.
Weapons do not shine, the animals are not spirited, and the fires, though well kindled, do not burn brightly.
All the fierce beasts are howling at the sun, and birds on our left are signaling great fear.
A jackal is running through the army, howling in the midst, and crows are cawing in the sky, foreboding great danger.
I see that even your hair stands on end, as if in excitement.
The bodies are feverish and sweating, and there is constant yawning; elephants stumble, horses shed tears, and always urinate and defecate again and again.
The earth is wet with blood, all directions are smoky, and the sun does not shine—these portend great danger.
The elephants are terrified, and the warriors too are afraid; your army is routed, and no one wishes to advance.
