एतस्मिन्नन्तरे पार्थं न मूढात्मा व्यजानत। विराटपुत्रः प्रभुखे पप्रच्छ पुनरेव तम्
Meanwhile, the son of Virata, not recognizing Partha, questioned him again in the presence of the king.
सुवर्णरुचिराण्येषामायुधानि महात्मनाम् । रुचिराणि प्रकाशन्ते पार्थानामाशुकारिणाम्
The weapons of these great souls, adorned with gold, shine brilliantly; they are splendid and radiant, belonging to the swift-acting sons of Pritha.
क्वनु ते पाण्डवाः शूराः संग्रामेष्वपराजिताः। येषामिमानि दीप्तानि श्रिया दीप्यन्ति भान्ति च
Where now are those heroic Pandavas, undefeated in battle, whose blazing weapons shine with glory?
कस्मिन्वसन्ति देशे च धर्मज्ञा बन्धुवत्सलाः। क्व धर्मराजः कौन्तेयो धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः
In what land do those righteous, kin-loving men dwell? Where is King Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, the son of Dharma?
धर्मशीलश्च धर्मात्मा धर्मवान्धर्मवित्सुधीः । धर्माध्यक्षो धर्मपुत्रो धर्मज्ञो धर्ममूर्तिमान्
He is of righteous conduct, righteous soul, endowed with righteousness, knower of righteousness, wise, overseer of righteousness, son of Dharma, knower of righteousness, and the very embodiment of righteousness.
धर्मनिष्ठो धर्मकर्ता धर्मगोप्ता सुधर्मकृत्। सत्यार्जवक्षमाधारो घृणी धर्मपरायणः
Firm in righteousness, performer of righteous acts, protector of righteousness, doer of great righteousness, foundation of truth, sincerity, and forgiveness, compassionate, devoted to righteousness.
भीमसेनार्जुनौ चापि सर्वे ते मातुला मम। नकुलः सहदेवो वा सर्वास्त्रकुशलौ रणे
Bhimasena and Arjuna too, and all of them are my maternal uncles; Nakula or Sahadeva, both skilled in all weapons in battle.
सर्व एव महात्मानः सर्वामित्रविनाशनाः। राज्यमक्षैः पराजित्य नः श्रूयन्ते वनं गताः
All of them are truly great souls, destroyers of all enemies; it is heard that, having been defeated at dice for the kingdom, they went to the forest.
द्रौपदी चापि पाञ्चाली स्त्रीरत्नमिति मे श्रुता। जिता चाक्षैस्तदा कृष्णा तानेवान्वगमद्वने
And Draupadi, the Panchala princess, famed as a jewel among women, was also lost at dice; that Krishna followed them into the forest.
उत्सृज्य राज्यं धर्म्यं ते नः श्रूयन्ते वनं गताः
Abandoning their righteous kingdom, it is heard that they went to the forest.
पाण्डवान्यदि जानीषे क्वनु ते धर्मचारिणः । क्वनु वा निवसन्तीति सत्यं ब्रूहि बृहन्नले
If you know where the sons of Pandu are, those who walk in righteousness, tell me truly, Brihannala—where are they living now?
किमर्थमागतान्यत्र शस्त्रास्त्राणि महात्मनाम्। कथं ज्ञातानि भवता तथा मे ब्रूहि शोभने
For what reason have the weapons and missiles of those great souls come here? How did you come to know of them? Tell me this as well, O fair one.
ततः प्रहस्य बीभत्सुः कौन्तेयः श्वेतवाहनः। उवाच राजपुत्रं तमुत्तरं शृणु मे वचः
Then, smiling, Arjuna, son of Kunti, the one with the white steeds, spoke to that prince Uttara: 'Listen to my words.'
मा भैस्त्वं राजशार्दूल सर्वं ते वर्णयाम्यहम् । नात्र भेतव्यमद्यापि राजपुत्र यथातथा
Do not be afraid, tiger among kings; I will explain everything to you. There is no need for fear even now, prince, whatever may come.
वयं ते पाण्डवा नाम वनवासस्य पारगाः। अतीते द्वादशे वर्षे च्छन्नवासमिहोषिताः। तस्मादशङ्कितमनाः शृणुष्वावहितोत्तर
We are those called the Pandavas, who have completed our forest exile. Having spent the thirteenth year here in concealment, listen attentively and without suspicion, Uttara.
अहमस्म्यर्जुनो नाम कङ्को नाम युधिष्ठिरः। भीमसेनस्तु वललः पितुस्ते रसपाचकः। अश्वबन्धस्तु नकुलः सहदेवस्तु गोपतिः
I am Arjuna by name; Yudhishthira is called Kanka; Bhimasena is Vallala, your father's cook; Nakula is the keeper of horses, and Sahadeva is the chief of the cattle.
सैरन्ध्रीं द्रौपदीं विद्धि यदर्थे कीचको हतः। भीमसेनेन दुर्वृत्तः सहभ्रातृभिराहवे
Know that Sairandhri is Draupadi, for whose sake the wicked Kichaka was slain by Bhimasena in battle, with the help of his brothers.
श्रुत्वैतद्वचनं जिष्णोर्विस्मयस्फारितेक्षणः । पश्यन्ननिमिषः पार्थं शनैर्वाचमुवाच ह
Hearing these words of Jishnu, Uttara's eyes widened in astonishment; gazing unblinking at Partha, he slowly spoke these words.
दश पार्थस्य नामानि श्रूयन्ते मे कथासु च। प्रब्रूयास्तानि यदि मे श्रद्दध्यां सर्वमेव ते
I have heard in stories that Partha has ten names; if you tell me those, I will believe everything you say.
अहं तर्हि तवाचक्षे दश नामानि तानि मे। वैराटे शृणु तानि त्वं यानि पूर्वं श्रुतानि ते। ईशानो विदधे देवस्त्रिदिवस्येश्वरो दिवि
Then I shall tell you my ten names, O prince of the Matsyas; listen to them here in Virata, as you have heard before: Ishana, Vidhata, Deva, the lord of the three worlds in heaven—
अर्जुनः फल्गुनो जिष्णुः किरीटी श्वेतवाहनः। बीभत्सुर्विजयः पार्थः सव्यसाची धनञ्जयः। एतानि मम नामानि स्थापितानि सुरोत्तमैः
Arjuna, Phalguna, Jishnu, Kiriti, Shvetavahana, Bibhatsu, Vijaya, Partha, Savyasachi, Dhananjaya—these are my names, established by the best of the gods.
गुणतो दश नामानि समवेतानि पाण्डवे। चरन्ति लोके ख्यातानि विदितानि ममावघ
By virtue, these ten names have come together for the son of Pandu; they are renowned in the world and well known to all.
केनासि विजयो नाम केनासि श्वेतवाहनः। सव्यसाची च केनासि जिष्णुर्बीभत्सुरेव च
By what cause are you called Vijaya? By what cause Shvetavahana? And Savyasachi, and also Jishnu and Bibhatsu—why are you so named?
अर्जुनः फल्गुनः पार्थः किरीटी केन सारथे। धनञ्जयश्च केनासि शीघ्रं वद बृहन्नले
Why are you called Arjuna, Phalguna, Partha, Kiriti, and Dhananjaya? Tell me quickly, Brihannala, for what reason you bear these names.
श्रुता मे तस्य वीरस्य केवला नामहेतवः। इतस्ततश्चलत्येतन्मनो मे चञ्चलं त्वयि। अर्जुनो वा भवान्नेति वद शीघ्रं बृहन्नले
I have heard only the reasons for those names of that hero; my mind wanders here and there, restless because of you. Tell me quickly, Brihannala, are you truly Arjuna or not?
सर्वाञ्जित्वा जनपदान्धनं चाच्छिद्य सर्वशः। मध्ये धनस्य तिष्ठन्तं तन्मामाहुर्धनञ्जयम्
Having conquered all the kingdoms and seized all their wealth, and standing in the midst of that treasure, I was called Dhananjaya by men.
अभिप्रयामि संग्रामे यदाऽहं युद्धदुर्मदान्। अजित्वा न निविर्तेयं तेन वै विजयं विदुः
Whenever I go into battle against those mad for war, I do not return without victory; for this reason, I am known as Vijaya.
श्वेताः काञ्चनसन्नाहा रथे युज्यन्ति मे हयाः। शत्रुभिर्युध्यमानस्य तेनाहं श्वेतवाहनः
White horses, adorned with golden harness, are yoked to my chariot; because I fight my enemies with them, I am called Shvetavahana.
किरीटं सूर्यसंकाशं भ्राजते मे शिरोगतम्। रणमध्ये रथस्थस्य सूर्यपावकसन्निभम्
The crown, radiant like the sun, shines upon my head as I stand in my chariot amidst battle, resembling the brilliance of the sun and fire.
अच्छेद्यं रुचिरं चित्रं जाम्बूनदपरिष्कृतम्। इन्द्रदत्तमनाहार्यं तेनाहुर्मां किरीटिनम्
It is indestructible, splendid, adorned with intricate designs, embellished with gold; given by Indra and impossible to be taken away, thus they call me 'the crowned one.'
