MB 4.41.17

कस्यायं निर्मलः खङ्गो द्वीपिचर्मनिवासितः। नीलोत्पलसवर्णोऽयं कस्य खङ्गः पृथुर्महान्

Whose is this spotless sword, sheathed in leopard skin, and whose is this broad, great sword, colored like a blue lotus?

MB 4.41.18

मृगेन्द्रचर्मावसितस्तीक्ष्णधारः सुनिर्मलः। ऋषभाजिनकोशस्तु कस्य खङ्गो महानयम्

Whose is this great sword, sheathed in lion skin, with a sharp edge and perfect clarity, its case adorned with bull emblems?

MB 4.41.19

यस्यापिधाने दृश्यन्ते सूर्याः पञ्च परिष्कृताः। कस्यायं विपुलः खङ्गः शृङ्गत्सरुमनोहरः

Whose is this massive, splendid sword, upon whose hilt five decorated suns are seen?

MB 4.41.20

निहितः पार्षते कोशे तैलधौतः समाहितः। प्रमाणवर्णयुक्तश्च कस्य खङ्गो महानयम्। एतेन प्रतिविद्धः सञ्जीवेत्कश्चिन्न कुञ्जरः

Whose is this great sword, placed in a Parshata case, well-oiled and carefully kept, perfect in size and color, with which, if struck, even an elephant might revive?

MB 4.41.21

निर्दिशस्व यथामार्गं मया पृष्टा बृहन्नले। विस्मयो मे परो जातो दृष्ट्वा सर्वमिदं महत्

Show me the way, as I have asked you, to Brihannala; great wonder has arisen in me, seeing all this vastness.

MB 4.42.1

अत्तरेणैवमुक्तस्तु पार्थो वैराटिमब्रवीत्। मृद्व्या प्रत्याययन्वाचा भीतं शङ्कावशं गतम्

Then, addressed in this way by Attara, Partha spoke to the king of Virata, with gentle words, reassuring the frightened and anxious one.

MB 4.42.2

अत्त्वया प्रथमं पृष्टं शत्रुसेनाङ्गमर्दनम्। पार्थस्येदं धनुर्दिव्यं गाण्डीवमिति विश्रुतम्

You first asked about the crushing of enemy armies; this divine bow of Partha is renowned as Gandiva.

MB 4.42.3

अभेद्यमभयं श्रीमद्दिव्यमच्छेद्यमव्रणम्। सर्वायुधमहामात्रं शातकुम्भमयं धनुः

It is impenetrable, fearless, splendid, divine, unbreakable, without blemish; a bow of pure gold, fit for all weapons and great measures.

MB 4.42.4

एतच्छतसहस्रेण संमितं राष्ट्रवर्धनम् । देवदानवगन्धर्वैः पूजितं शाश्वतीः समाः

This bow, equal to a hundred thousand, increases the realm; it has been worshipped by gods, demons, and gandharvas for countless ages.

MB 4.42.5

येन देवासुरान्पार्थः सर्वान्विषहते रणे। एतद्वर्षसहस्रं तु ब्रह्मा पूर्वमधारयत्

With this, Partha endures all the gods and demons in battle; for a thousand years, Brahma formerly bore it.

MB 4.42.6

उमापतिश्चतुःषष्टिं शक्रोऽशीतिं च पञ्च च । सोमः पञ्चसहस्राणि तथा च वरुणः शतम्

Umapati bore it for sixty-four years, Shakra for eighty-five, Soma for five thousand, and likewise Varuna for a hundred.

MB 4.42.7

तस्माच्च वरुणादग्निः प्रेम्णा प्राहृत्य तच्छुभम्। अग्निना प्रातिभाव्येन दत्तं पार्थाय गाण्डिवम् । पञ्चषष्टिं च वर्षाणि कौन्तेयो धारयिष्यति

Then, from Varuna, Agni lovingly received that auspicious bow; by Agni's promise, Gandiva was given to Partha, and Kaunteya will bear it for sixty-five years.

MB 4.42.8

एवंवीर्यं महावेतेतच्च धनुरुत्तमम् । नीलोत्पलसमं राज्ञः कौरव्यस्य महात्मनः

Such is the power and greatness of this excellent bow, equal to a blue lotus, belonging to the noble king of the Kauravas.

MB 4.42.9

बिन्दवश्चात्र सौवर्णाः पृष्ठे साधुनियोजिताः । विश्रुतं भीमसेनस्य जातरूपग्रहं दृढम्

Here, golden studs are skillfully set on the back; the famed Bhimasena possesses a firm grip of pure gold.

MB 4.42.10

सहस्रगोधाः सौवर्णा द्वीपिनश्च चतुर्दश । ऋषभा यत्र सौवर्णाः पृष्ठे तिष्ठन्ति शृङ्गिणः

A thousand golden lizards and fourteen crocodiles are there; golden bulls with horns stand on the back.

MB 4.42.11

येन भीमोऽजयत्कृत्स्नां दिशं प्राचीं परंतपः। पृष्ठे विभक्ताः शोभन्ते कुशाग्निप्रतिदीपिताः

With this, Bhima conquered the entire eastern region, O scorcher of foes; on the back, divided, they shine, ignited like kusa grass.

MB 4.42.12

पूजितं सुरमर्त्येषु प्रथितं धनुरुत्तमम्। तालप्रमाणं भीमस्य रत्नरुक्मविभूषितम्

Worshipped among gods and men, this excellent bow is renowned; it is the size of a palm tree, adorned with gems and gold for Bhima.

MB 4.42.13

दुरानमं महद्दीर्घं सुरूपं दुष्प्रधर्षणम् । बर्हिणश्चात्र सौवर्णाः शतचन्द्रकभूषणाः

It is very distant, large, long, beautiful, and hard to overcome; golden peacocks are here, adorned with a hundred moon-like ornaments.

MB 4.42.14

नकुलस्य धनुस्त्वेतन्माद्रीपुत्रस्य धीमतः। एतेन सदृशं चित्रं धनुरेतद्यवीयसः। हारिद्रवर्णं राज्ञस्तु कौरव्यस्य महात्मनः

This is the bow of Nakula, the wise son of Madri; a similar, splendid bow belongs to his younger brother; it is yellowish, belonging to the noble king of the Kauravas.

MB 4.42.15

विपाठा भीमसेनस्य गिरीणामपि दारणाः । सुप्रभाः सुमहाकायास्तीक्ष्णाग्राः सुतरां दृढाः । भीमेन प्रहिता ह्येते वारणानां निवारणाः

The Vipatha arrows of Bhimasena can pierce even mountains; they are bright, very large, sharp-tipped, and extremely strong; sent by Bhima, they are the defense against elephants.

MB 4.42.16

सुवर्णदण्डरुचिराः कालदण्डोपमाः शुभाः । नकुलस्य शरा ह्येते वज्राशनिसमप्रभाः

These arrows of Nakula, with golden shafts, shine like the staff of Time, auspicious and radiant as thunderbolts.

MB 4.42.17

यांश्च त्वं पृच्छसे दीप्तान्समधारान्समाहितान्। वराहकर्णास्तीक्ष्णाग्राः सहदेवस्य ते शराः

Those blazing, well-aimed, concentrated arrows you ask about, with boar-shaped heads and sharp tips, are the arrows of Sahadeva.

MB 4.42.18

यस्त्वयं सायको दीर्घो गव्ये कोशे च दंशितः। पार्थस्यायं महाघोरः सर्वभारसहो महान्

This long arrow, which has been placed in the quiver for cattle and tested, belongs to Partha; it is exceedingly terrible, great, and able to bear all burdens.

MB 4.42.19

यस्त्वयं निर्मलः खङ्गो द्वीपिचर्मणि दंशितः। राज्ञो युधिष्ठिरस्यायं कुन्तीपुत्रस्य धीमतः

This spotless sword, tested on the hide of an island animal, belongs to King Yudhishthira, the wise son of Kunti.

MB 4.42.20

वैयाघकोशो भीमस्य पञ्चशार्दूललक्षणः । वारणानां सुदृप्तानां शिक्षितः स्कन्धशातने

This tiger-skin quiver of Bhima bears the marks of five tigers; it is trained to shatter the shoulders of even the most arrogant elephants.

MB 4.42.21

नीलोत्पलसवर्णाभः खङ्गः पार्थस्य धीमतः। मृगेन्द्रचर्मपिहितस्तीक्ष्णधारः सुनिर्मलः

This sword of the wise Partha shines with the hue of a blue lotus, covered with a lion's skin, sharp-edged and perfectly clean.

MB 4.42.22

दर्शनीयः सुतीक्ष्णाग्रः कुन्तीपुत्रस्य धीमतः । अर्जुनस्यैष निस्त्रिंशः परसैन्याग्रदूषणः

This beautiful, keen-bladed sword belongs to the wise son of Kunti, Arjuna; it is a scimitar that devastates the front ranks of enemy armies.

MB 4.42.23

यस्त्वयं पार्षते कोशे निक्षिप्तो रुचिरत्सरुः ।। नकुलस्यैष निस्त्रिंशो वैश्वानरसमप्रभः

This splendid sword, placed in the Parshata's sheath, belongs to Nakula; it glows with the radiance of fire.

MB 4.42.24

यस्त्वयं पिङ्गलः खङ्गश्चित्रो मणिमयत्सरुः। सहदेवस्य खङ्गोऽयं भारसाहोऽतिदंशितःक । भीमस्यायं महादण्डः सर्वामित्रविनाशनः

This tawny, variegated sword with a jeweled hilt belongs to Sahadeva; it is exceedingly sharp and heavy. This great mace of Bhima is the destroyer of all enemies.

MB 4.42.25

भेदतो ह्यर्जुनस्तूर्णं कथयामास तत्त्वतः । आयुधानि कलापांश्च निस्त्रिंशांश्चातुलप्रभान्

Then Arjuna swiftly and accurately described the weapons, the quivers, and the swords of incomparable brilliance.
