Having released Susharma, those Pandavas, destroyers of their foes, endowed with the strength of their own arms, devoted to lowly service and firm in their vows, spent that night happily in the midst of the battlefield.
Then Virata honored the sons of Kunti, heroes of superhuman valor, with wealth, with respect, with words of praise, with gentle speech, and with affection, his heart filled with joy.
Just as my treasures are mine, so they are yours as well; use them all as you wish, for any purpose, as you desire, as you find pleasure.
I give you adorned maidens and various kinds of wealth, and whatever else your hearts desire, you who have destroyed your enemies.
Because of your valor, today I am freed and safe here; therefore, all of you are indeed the lords of the Matsyas.
To him, as he spoke thus, the Kauravas, led by Yudhishthira, each in turn, spoke with delighted hearts.
We accept your words in every way, O lord of men; we are satisfied today simply because you have been freed from your enemies.
That you have been freed from your enemies—this is what is beneficial for us; we seek nothing else, neither wealth nor reward.
Then the king of the Matsyas, his heart filled with joy, spoke to Yudhishthira, his voice choked with delight.
Again the mighty Virata, foremost of kings, said: 'Come, I will anoint you; you must be the king of the Matsyas for us.'
And whatever your heart desires, you who have destroyed your enemies, that too I will give you; you are worthy of all.
Jewels, cows, gold, and even pearls and gems—O best of Brahmins, all these are yours; I bow to you in every way.
Because of you, today I see both my kingdom and myself; and the conflict that arose, that enemy too has been subdued.
Then Yudhishthira again spoke to the Matsya king: 'I accept your gracious and pleasing words, O Matsya.'
Ever devoted to compassion and always gracious, King Virata once again spoke to Kanka.
O best of Brahmins, how remarkable are the deeds of the Shudra Valala! I myself was protected in battle by that Shudra Valala.
All this is fitting for me because of you, O sinless one; choose a boon, O fortunate one, tell me—what shall I do for you?
With great affection I offer you gems, both precious and common, beds, seats, vehicles, and maidens adorned with ornaments.
Take also, out of my affection, herds of elephants and horses, chariots, and various lands—accept these from me.
To him who spoke thus, the Kaurava replied there: 'This alone is my joy—that you have been freed from your enemies.'
If you are pleased and satisfied, O scorcher of foes, then enter your city, embracing your wives and sons; that alone is my unparalleled happiness.
But, O king, dismiss Susharma along with his servants, troops, and vehicles; this is the boon I choose, O best of men.
When Kanka had spoken thus, the excellent king Virata replied to Kanka, 'Let Susharma depart as he wishes.'
Let swift messengers go to your city, O king, to announce joyful news to your friends and proclaim your victory.
Then, at those words, the Matsya king ordered his messengers: 'Go to the city and declare my victory in battle.'
Let the maidens, adorned, depart from my city; let all musical instruments and the decorated courtesans go forth; and let all my citizens return quickly.
Thus instructed, the messengers set out at night as directed; and meanwhile, other swift messengers followed after them.
They entered the city just as the sun had fully risen; reaching Virata's city, they quickly proclaimed the victory festival, and the city, adorned with banners and garlands, was without equal.
When the Trigartas had departed from Matsya, Duryodhana, desiring those cattle, approached the city of Virata with his ministers.
Bhishma, Drona, Karna, Kripa the master of weapons, Drona's son, Saubala, as well as Duhshasana and Shala,
