स्वबाहुबलसंपन्ना ह्रीनिषेवा यतव्रताः। विराटस्य महात्मानः परिक्लेशविनाशनाः। स्थिताः समक्षं ते सर्वे त्वथ भीमोऽभ्यभाषत ।। 61
Endowed with the strength of their own arms, devoted to modesty and vows, those noble ones of Virāṭa, destroyers of hardship, stood together; then Bhīma spoke.
नायं पापसमाचारो मत्तो जीवितुमर्हति। किंनु शक्यं मया कर्तुं यद्राजा सततं घृणी । गले गृहीत्वा राजानमानीय विवशं वशम् ।। 62
This one, acting wickedly, does not deserve to live by my hand; what could I do, since the king is always compassionate? Having seized the king by the neck, I brought him, helpless, under control.
तत एनं विचेष्टन्तं बद्ध्वा पार्थो वृकोदरः। रथमारोपयामास विसंज्ञं पांसुगुण्ठितम् ।। 63
Then, as he struggled, Pārtha, Vṛkodara, bound him, placed him unconscious and covered in dust onto the chariot.
अभ्येत्य रणमध्यस्थमभ्यगच्छद्युधिष्ठिरम् । दर्शयामास भीमस्तु सुशर्माणं नराधिपम् ।। 64
Having approached the center of the battlefield, Bhīma came to Yudhiṣṭhira and showed him Suśarman, the lord of men.
प्रोवाच पुरुषव्याघ्रो भीममाहवशोभिनम् । तं राजा प्राहसद्दृष्ट्वा मुच्यतां वै नराधमः ।। 65
The tiger among men, Bhīma, radiant in battle, spoke; the king, seeing him, laughed and said, 'Let this wretch of men be released.'
एवमुक्तोऽब्रवीद्भीमः सुशर्माणं महाबलम् । जीवितुं चेच्छसे मूढ हेतुं मे गदतः शृणु ।। 66
Thus addressed, Bhīma spoke to the mighty Suśarman: 'If you wish to live, fool, listen to the reason I am about to tell you.'
दासोस्मीति त्वया वाच्यं संसत्सु च सभासु च । एवं ते जीवितं दद्यामेष युद्धजितो विधिः ।। 67
You must declare, in gatherings and in assemblies, 'I am your servant.' Thus I would grant you your life; this is the rule for one defeated in battle.
तमुवाच ततो ज्येष्ठो भ्राता सप्रणयं वचः। मुञ्चमुञ्चाधमाचारं प्रमाणं यदि ते वयम् ।। 68
Then the eldest brother spoke to him with affection: 'Cease, cease this base conduct, if we are indeed your measure.'
दासभावं गतो ह्येष विराटस्य महीपतेः। अदासो गच्छ मुक्तोसि मैवं कार्षीः कदाचन ।। 69
He has come into the state of servitude to King Virata; you are not a slave—go, you are released. Never act thus again.
एवमुक्ते तु सव्रीडः सुशर्माऽसीदधोमुखः । स मुक्तोऽभ्येत्य राजानमभिवाद्य प्रतस्थिवान् ।। 70
When this was said, Susharma, abashed, stood with lowered face; released, he approached the king, offered his respects, and departed.
विसृज्य तु सुशर्माणं पाण्डवास्ते हतद्विषः । स्वबाहुबलसंपन्ना हीनिषेवा यतव्रताः । संग्रामशिरसो मध्ये तां रात्रिं सुखिनोऽवसन् ।। 71
Having released Susharma, those Pandavas, destroyers of their foes, endowed with the strength of their own arms, devoted to lowly service and firm in their vows, spent that night happily in the midst of the battlefield.
ततो विराटः कौन्तेयानतिमानुषविक्रमान्। अर्चयामास वित्तेन मानेन च महारथान्। वचसा चैव सान्त्वेन स्नेहेन च मुदाऽन्वितः ।। 1
Then Virata honored the sons of Kunti, heroes of superhuman valor, with wealth, with respect, with words of praise, with gentle speech, and with affection, his heart filled with joy.
यथैव मम रत्नानि युष्माकं तानि वै तथा। कार्यं कुरुत तैः सर्वैर्यथाकामं यथासुखम् ।। 2
Just as my treasures are mine, so they are yours as well; use them all as you wish, for any purpose, as you desire, as you find pleasure.
ददाम्यलंकृताः कन्या वसूनि विविधानि च। मनसा चाप्यभिप्रेतं यद्वः शत्रुनिबर्हणाः ।। 3
I give you adorned maidens and various kinds of wealth, and whatever else your hearts desire, you who have destroyed your enemies.
युष्माकं विक्रमादद्य मुक्तोऽहं स्वस्तिमानिह । तस्माद्भवन्तो मत्स्यानामीश्वराः सर्व एव हि ।। 4
Because of your valor, today I am freed and safe here; therefore, all of you are indeed the lords of the Matsyas.
तं तथावादिनं तत्र कौरवेयाः पृथक्पृथक्। ऊचुः प्रहृष्टमनसो युधिष्ठिरपुरोगमाः ।। 5
To him, as he spoke thus, the Kauravas, led by Yudhishthira, each in turn, spoke with delighted hearts.
प्रतिनन्दामहे वाचं सर्वथैव विशांपते। एतावताऽद्य प्रीताःस्मो यत्त्वं मुक्तोसि शत्रुभिः ।। 6
We accept your words in every way, O lord of men; we are satisfied today simply because you have been freed from your enemies.
यत्त्वं मुक्तोसि शत्रुभ्यो ह्येतत्कार्यं हितं हि नः । न किंचित्कार्यमस्माकं न धनं मृगयामहे ।। 7
That you have been freed from your enemies—this is what is beneficial for us; we seek nothing else, neither wealth nor reward.
अथाब्रवीत्प्रीतमना मात्स्यराजो युधिष्ठिरम्। निर्भरः प्रीतिपूरेण हर्षगद्गदया गिरा ।। 8
Then the king of the Matsyas, his heart filled with joy, spoke to Yudhishthira, his voice choked with delight.
पुनरेव महाबाहुर्विराटो राजसत्तमः । एहि त्वामभिषेक्ष्यामि मत्स्यराजस्तु नो भवान् ।। 9
Again the mighty Virata, foremost of kings, said: 'Come, I will anoint you; you must be the king of the Matsyas for us.'
मनसा चाप्यभिप्रेतं यत्ते शत्रुनिबर्हण। तत्तेऽहं संप्रदास्यामि सर्वमर्हति नो भवान् ।। 10
And whatever your heart desires, you who have destroyed your enemies, that too I will give you; you are worthy of all.
रत्नानि गाः सुवर्णं च मणिमुक्तमथापि वा। वैयाघ्रपद्य विप्रेन्द्र सर्वथैव नमोस्तु ते ।। 11
Jewels, cows, gold, and even pearls and gems—O best of Brahmins, all these are yours; I bow to you in every way.
त्वत्कृते ह्यद्य पश्यामि राज्यमात्मानमेव च। यतश्च जातः संरम्भः स च शत्रुर्वशं गतः ।। 12
Because of you, today I see both my kingdom and myself; and the conflict that arose, that enemy too has been subdued.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो मात्स्यं पुनरेवाब्रवीद्वचः। प्रतिनन्दामि ते वाचं मनोज्ञां मात्स्य भाषितां ।। 13
Then Yudhishthira again spoke to the Matsya king: 'I accept your gracious and pleasing words, O Matsya.'
आनृशंस्यपरो नित्यं सुमुखः सततं भवान् । पुनरेव विराटश्च राजा कङ्कमभाषत ।। 14
Ever devoted to compassion and always gracious, King Virata once again spoke to Kanka.
अहो शूद्रस्य कर्माणि वललस्य द्विजोत्तम । सोहं शूद्रेण संग्रामे वललेनाभिरक्षितः ।। 15
O best of Brahmins, how remarkable are the deeds of the Shudra Valala! I myself was protected in battle by that Shudra Valala.
त्वत्कृते सर्वमेवैतदुपपन्नं ममानघ। वरं वृष्णीष्व भद्रं ते ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते ।। 16
All this is fitting for me because of you, O sinless one; choose a boon, O fortunate one, tell me—what shall I do for you?
ददामि ते महाप्रीत्या रत्नान्युच्चावचान्यहम्। शयनासनयानानि कन्याश्च समलंकुताः ।। 17
With great affection I offer you gems, both precious and common, beds, seats, vehicles, and maidens adorned with ornaments.
हस्त्यश्वरथसङ्घाश्च राष्ट्राणि विविधानि च। एतानि च मम प्रीत्या प्रतिगृह्ण ममान्तिके ।। 18
Take also, out of my affection, herds of elephants and horses, chariots, and various lands—accept these from me.
तं तथावादिनं तत्र कौरव्यः प्रत्यभाषत। एषैव तु मम प्रीतिर्यत्त्वं मुक्तोसि शत्रुभिः ।। 19
To him who spoke thus, the Kaurava replied there: 'This alone is my joy—that you have been freed from your enemies.'
