सुशर्मा सायकांस्तीक्ष्णान्क्षिपते च पुनःपुनः ।। 41
Susharma kept hurling sharp arrows again and again.
ततः समस्तास्ते सर्वे तुरगानभ्यचोदयन्। दिव्यमस्त्रं विकुर्वाणास्त्रिगर्तान्प्रत्यमर्षणाः ।। 42
Then all of them urged on their horses, wielding divine weapons, the Trigartas, unyielding in battle.
तान्निवृत्तरथान्दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवास्तां महाचमूम् । वैराटिः परमक्रुद्धो युयुधे परमाद्भुतम् ।। 43
Seeing the Pandavas turn back those chariots and that great army, Virata, filled with utmost wrath, fought an extraordinary battle.
त्रिगर्ताः समभिक्रम्य अयुध्यन्त जयैषिणः। तान्भीमसेनः संक्रुद्धः सर्वशस्त्रभृतांवरः । वैराटिः परमक्रुद्धो युयुधे परमाद्भुतम् ।। 44
The Trigartas advanced, eager for victory and fought; Bhimasena, furious and best among all weapon-bearers, and Virata, in great anger, fought an astonishing battle.
सहस्रं प्राहिणीद्राजा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। नकुलश्चापि सप्तैव शतानि प्राहिणोच्छरैः ।। 45
King Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, sent forth a thousand (arrows), and Nakula too dispatched seven hundred with his shafts.
शतानि त्रीणि शूराणां सहदेवः प्रतापवान् । युधिष्ठिरसमादिष्टो निजघ्ने पुरुषर्षभः ।। 46
Sahadeva, valiant and commanded by Yudhishthira, struck down three hundred of the heroes, O best of men.
प्रविश्य महतीं सेनां त्रिगर्तानां महाबलः । क्षोभयन्सर्वभूतानि सिंहः क्षुद्रमृगानिव ।। 47
Entering the great army of the Trigartas, the mighty one agitated all beings like a lion among small animals.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा त्वरमाणो महाबलः। अभिद्रुत्य सुशर्माणं शरैरभ्यहनद्धृशम् ।। 48
Then King Yudhishthira, swift and mighty, rushed at Susharma and struck him boldly with arrows.
सुशर्माऽपि सुसंक्रुद्धस्त्वराणो युधिष्ठिरम् । अविध्यद्दशभिर्बाणैश्चतुर्भिश्चतुरो हयान् ।। 49
Even Suśarman, greatly enraged and swift, struck Yudhiṣṭhira with ten arrows, and with four arrows he wounded his four horses.
ततो राजन्क्षिप्रकारी कुन्तीऽपुत्रो वृकोदरः। समासाद्य सुशर्माणमश्वांस्तस्य न्यपातयत् ।। 50
Then, O King, the quick-acting son of Kuntī, Vṛkodara, approached Suśarman and brought down his horses.
पृष्ठगोषौ च तस्याथ हत्वा परमसायकैः। अथास्य सारथिं क्रुद्धो रथोपस्थादपतयत् ।। 51
Then, having slain his rear guards with mighty arrows, he, angered, struck down Suśarman's charioteer from the chariot platform.
चक्ररक्षस्तु शूरश्च शोणाश्वो नाम नामतः। स भयाद्विरथं दृष्ट्वा त्रैगर्तं व्याजहात्तदा ।। 52
The valiant protector of the chariot wheel, named Śoṇāśva, seeing the king of the Trigartas deprived of his chariot out of fear, abandoned him at that moment.
ततो विराटः प्रस्कन्द्य रथादथ सुशर्मणः। गदामस्य परामृश्य तमेवाभ्यहनद्बली ।। 53
Then Virāṭa, leaping down from Suśarman's chariot, seized his mace and, powerful, struck him with it.
स चचार गदापाणिर्वृद्धोऽपि तरुणो यथा ।। 54
Though aged, he wielded the mace as energetically as a young man.
भीमस्तु भीमसंकाशो रथात्प्रस्कन्द्य वीर्यवान् । उत्प्लुत्य गत्वा वेगेन तद्रथे विनिपत्य च। सुशर्मणः शिरोऽगुह्णात्पुनराश्वास्य युध्यतः ।। 55
Bhīma, equal to Bhīma in might, leapt from his chariot with vigor, sprang swiftly onto Suśarman's chariot, and seized Suśarman's head as he fought, again restraining him.
अग्राद्गिरेर्विनिक्षिप्य सिंहः क्षुद्रमृगं यथा। ऊर्ध्वमुत्प्लृत्य मार्जार आखोर्यद्वच्छिरो रुषा ।। 56
Just as a lion throws down a small animal from the mountain's summit, or as a cat fiercely lifts a mouse's head, so did he.
समुद्यम्य तु रोषात्तं निष्पिपेष महीतले। यदा मूर्ध्नि महाबाहुः प्राहरद्विलपिष्यतः ।। 57
Raising him in anger, he crushed him to the ground, striking his head as he wailed, the mighty-armed one.
तस्य जानु ददौ भीमो जघ्ने चैनमरत्निना । स मोहमगमद्राजा प्रहारवरपीडितः।। 58
Bhīma struck his knee and hit him with his weapon; the king, overwhelmed by the powerful blow, fell into unconsciousness.
तस्मिन्वीरे गृहीते तु त्रिगर्तानां महारथे। अभज्यत बलं सर्वं त्रिगर्तानां भयातुरम् ।। 59
When that hero was captured, the entire force of the Trigarta warriors, terrified, was broken.
निवृत्य गास्ततः सर्वाः पाण्डुपुत्रा महारथाः। अवजित्य सुशर्माणं धनं चादाय सर्वशः ।। 60
Then all the great chariot-warriors, sons of Pāṇḍu, turned back with the cattle, having defeated Suśarman and taken all the wealth.
स्वबाहुबलसंपन्ना ह्रीनिषेवा यतव्रताः। विराटस्य महात्मानः परिक्लेशविनाशनाः। स्थिताः समक्षं ते सर्वे त्वथ भीमोऽभ्यभाषत ।। 61
Endowed with the strength of their own arms, devoted to modesty and vows, those noble ones of Virāṭa, destroyers of hardship, stood together; then Bhīma spoke.
नायं पापसमाचारो मत्तो जीवितुमर्हति। किंनु शक्यं मया कर्तुं यद्राजा सततं घृणी । गले गृहीत्वा राजानमानीय विवशं वशम् ।। 62
This one, acting wickedly, does not deserve to live by my hand; what could I do, since the king is always compassionate? Having seized the king by the neck, I brought him, helpless, under control.
तत एनं विचेष्टन्तं बद्ध्वा पार्थो वृकोदरः। रथमारोपयामास विसंज्ञं पांसुगुण्ठितम् ।। 63
Then, as he struggled, Pārtha, Vṛkodara, bound him, placed him unconscious and covered in dust onto the chariot.
अभ्येत्य रणमध्यस्थमभ्यगच्छद्युधिष्ठिरम् । दर्शयामास भीमस्तु सुशर्माणं नराधिपम् ।। 64
Having approached the center of the battlefield, Bhīma came to Yudhiṣṭhira and showed him Suśarman, the lord of men.
प्रोवाच पुरुषव्याघ्रो भीममाहवशोभिनम् । तं राजा प्राहसद्दृष्ट्वा मुच्यतां वै नराधमः ।। 65
The tiger among men, Bhīma, radiant in battle, spoke; the king, seeing him, laughed and said, 'Let this wretch of men be released.'
एवमुक्तोऽब्रवीद्भीमः सुशर्माणं महाबलम् । जीवितुं चेच्छसे मूढ हेतुं मे गदतः शृणु ।। 66
Thus addressed, Bhīma spoke to the mighty Suśarman: 'If you wish to live, fool, listen to the reason I am about to tell you.'
दासोस्मीति त्वया वाच्यं संसत्सु च सभासु च । एवं ते जीवितं दद्यामेष युद्धजितो विधिः ।। 67
You must declare, in gatherings and in assemblies, 'I am your servant.' Thus I would grant you your life; this is the rule for one defeated in battle.
तमुवाच ततो ज्येष्ठो भ्राता सप्रणयं वचः। मुञ्चमुञ्चाधमाचारं प्रमाणं यदि ते वयम् ।। 68
Then the eldest brother spoke to him with affection: 'Cease, cease this base conduct, if we are indeed your measure.'
दासभावं गतो ह्येष विराटस्य महीपतेः। अदासो गच्छ मुक्तोसि मैवं कार्षीः कदाचन ।। 69
He has come into the state of servitude to King Virata; you are not a slave—go, you are released. Never act thus again.
एवमुक्ते तु सव्रीडः सुशर्माऽसीदधोमुखः । स मुक्तोऽभ्येत्य राजानमभिवाद्य प्रतस्थिवान् ।। 70
When this was said, Susharma, abashed, stood with lowered face; released, he approached the king, offered his respects, and departed.
