शतं पञ्चाधिकं भीमः प्राहिणोद्यमसादनम्। वृक्षेणैकेन राजेन्द्र प्रभञ्जनसुतो बली। वायुवेगसमः श्रीमान्सर्वान्सूतानशेषतः ।। 42
Bhima, the mighty son of the wind, struck down one hundred and five charioteers, O king, using a single tree; glorious and swift as the wind, he destroyed them all without exception.
तान्निहत्य महाबाहुर्भीमसेनो महाबलः। आश्वासयत्तदा कृष्णां प्रतिमुच्य च बन्धनात् ।। 43
Having slain them, Bhimasena of great strength freed Krishna from her bonds and comforted her.
उवाच श्लक्ष्णया वाचा पाञ्चालीं भरतर्षभः । अश्रुपूर्णमुखीं भीतामुद्धरन्स वृकोदरः ।। 44
The bull among the Bharatas, Vrikodara, gently spoke to Panchali, whose face was filled with tears and fear, as he rescued her.
[ मा खिदस्त्वं(*) याज्ञसेनि पातिव्रत्यव्रते स्थिता। पातिव्रत्ये स्थिता नारी व्रतं रक्षेत्सदाऽत्मनः।। 45
Do not grieve, O Yajnaseni, steadfast in the vow of fidelity; a woman who stands firm in her vow of chastity must always protect her own virtue.
पुरा स्त्री देवरातस्य पतिप्रीता शिरोमणिः। कदाचिद्भर्तृरूपेण रक्षसाऽपहृता सती ।। 46
Once, the jewel among women, devoted to her husband, belonging to Devarata, was abducted by a rakshasa who took the form of her husband.
कस्यचित्सरसस्तीरे तां निवेश्य स राक्षसः। तद्भर्तृरूपं संत्यज्य रक्षो भूत्वा सुदारुणम् ।। 47
That rakshasa placed her by the shore of a certain lake, then abandoned her husband's form and became a fierce demon.
साम्ना दानेन भेदेन सा यदा नान्वमन्यत। तदा तां पातयित्वा स मैथुनायोपचक्रमे ।। 48
When she did not yield to persuasion, gifts, or division, he threw her down and attempted to force her into intercourse.
ततः सा धैर्यमास्थाय विवरं त ददौ तदा। ततः स खङ्गमुत्कृष्य भीषयामास तां सतीम् ।। 49
Then, she gathered her courage and offered him a secret place; he drew his sword and threatened the virtuous woman.
साऽपि त्यक्तभया साध्वी प्राणत्यागे सुनिश्चिता। प्रतिज्ञामकरोत्कृष्णे पातिव्रत्यपरायणा ।। 50
That chaste woman, fearless and resolved to give up her life, made a vow to Krishna, devoted to fidelity.
आराधितो यदि मया भर्ता मे दैवतं महत्। कर्मणा मनसा वाचा गुरवस्तोषिता मया। तेन सत्येन योनिर्मे भवत्वद्य शिला दृढा ।। 51
If I have worshipped my husband as my great deity, with action, mind, and speech, and pleased my elders, then by that truth, let my womb become as firm as stone today.
एवं तया प्रतिज्ञाते तद्योनिः सा शिलाऽभवत्। अन्तरा नाभिजान्वोर्यत्तत्सर्वं च शिलाऽभवत् ।। 52
When she made that vow, her womb became stone; all within her navel and thighs turned to stone.
ततः स खङ्गमुद्धृत्य वेगेनास्याः शिरोऽहरत् ।। 53
Then, raising his sword, he swiftly cut off her head.
जया नाम सखी साऽभूत्पार्वत्या नखमांसवत्। तस्मात्पतिव्रतायाश्च दुःखमल्पं सुखं बहु ।। ] ।। 54
She became Jaya, a companion of Parvati, possessing nails and flesh; thus, for a woman devoted to fidelity, suffering is little and happiness is abundant.
एवं ते भीरु वध्यन्ते ये त्वां हिंसन्ति मानवाः। गच्छ त्वं नगरं कृष्णे न भयं विद्यते तव ।। 55
Thus, O timid one, those who harm you are destroyed; go to the city, O Krishna, you need not fear.
अन्येन त्वं पथा शीघ्रं सुदेष्णाया निवेशनम्। अन्येनाहं गमिष्यामि विराटस्य महानसम् । यथा नौ नावबुध्येरन्रात्रावेवं व्यवस्थितौ ।। 56
You go quickly by one path to Sudeṣṇā’s residence, and I will go by another to Virata’s kitchen, so that neither of us will be noticed at night as we depart.
साऽगच्छन्नगरं कृष्णा भीमेनाश्वासिता सती ।। 57 ।। कृतकृत्या सुदेष्णाया भवनं शुभलक्षणा
Krishna, comforted by Bhima and accomplished in her purpose, went to Sudeṣṇā’s splendid house.
शचीव नहुषे शप्ते प्रविवेश त्रिविष्टपम् ।। 58 ।। भीमोऽप्यमितवीर्यस्तु बलवानरिमर्दनः
Like Shachi entering heaven after Nahusha’s curse, she entered the palace; Bhima, of immeasurable strength, destroyer of enemies,
सर्वांस्तान्कीचकांस्तत्र हत्वा धर्मात्मजानुजः ।। 59 ।। निःशेषं कीचकान्हत्वा रामो रात्रिचरानिव
There, the son of Dharma’s younger brother slew all the Kichakas; having destroyed them completely, Rama killed the night-roaming demons.
जितशत्रुरदीनात्मा प्रविवेश पुरं ततः ।। 60 ।। पञ्चाधिकं शतं तत्र निहतं तेन भारत
Having conquered his enemies and with a fearless heart, he then entered the city. There, O Bharata, he had slain one hundred and five men.
महावनमिव छिन्नं शिश्ये विगलितद्रुमम् ।। 61 ।। एवं ते निहता राजञ्शतं पञ्चोपकीचकाः
Like a great forest cut down, with its trees fallen and scattered, so lay those one hundred and five Upakīcakas, struck down, O King.
स च सेनापतिः सूत इत्येतत्सूतषट्शतम् ।। 62 ।। न गन्धर्वभयाकिंचिद्वक्तुं कीचकबान्धवाः
And the charioteer who was their commander—thus, that band of six hundred charioteers—out of fear of the Gandharvas, the relatives of Kīcaka could say nothing.
अशक्नुवन्तस्तां तत्र भयादप्यभिवीक्षितुम् ।। 63 ।। विराटनगरे चापि सर्वे मात्स्याः समागताः
Unable, out of fear, even to look upon that place, all the Mātsyas gathered in the city of Virāṭa.
काल्यं पञ्चशतं चैतानपश्यन्सारथीन्हतान् ।। 64 ।। तद्दृष्ट्वा महदाश्चर्यं नरा नार्यश्च नागराः
In the morning, they saw those five hundred charioteers slain; seeing this great wonder, the men and women of the city,
विस्मयं परमं गत्वा नोचुः किंचन भारत ।। 65
Fell into utmost astonishment and said nothing, O Bharata.
ते दृष्ट्वा निहतान्सूतान्भीमसेनेन भारत। पौराश्च सहिताः सर्वे राज्ञे गत्वा न्यवेदयन् । गन्धर्वेण हता राजन्सूतपुत्राः परश्शतम् ।। 1
Having seen the charioteers slain by Bhīmasena, O Bharata, all the citizens together went and reported to the king: 'O King, a hundred sons of charioteers have been killed by a Gandharva.'
यथा वज्रेण दीर्णं वै पर्वतस्य महच्छिरः। विनिकार्णाः प्रदृश्यन्ते तथा सूता महीतले ।। 2
Just as the great peak of a mountain, split by a thunderbolt, is seen scattered, so the charioteers lay on the earth.
सैरन्ध्री चापि मुक्ता सा पुनरायाति ते गृहम् । सर्वं संशयितं राजन्नगरं ते भविष्यति ।। 3
And Sairandhrī has been released and is returning again to your house; O King, your entire city will now be filled with doubt.
तथारूपा हि सैरन्ध्री गन्धर्वाश्च महाबलाः । पुंसामिष्टश्च विषयो मैथुनाय न संशयः ।। 4
For Sairandhrī is of such a nature, and the Gandharvas are of great might; and men desire union with her—of this there is no doubt.
यथा सैरन्ध्रिदोषेण नेदं राजन्पुरं तव। विनाशमेति वै क्षिप्रं तथा साधु विधीयताम् ।। 5
Just as, because of Sairandhrī's fault, your city, O King, nearly met with destruction, so let proper measures be taken quickly.
सर्वाङ्गसौष्ठवयुतां रूपलावण्यशालिनीम् । पश्यतामनिमेषेण चक्षुषा वनितां शुभाम्। मनसश्चक्षुषश्चैव प्रतिबन्धो न विद्यते ।। 6
She is endowed with perfect limbs, radiant with beauty and charm; all gaze upon this auspicious woman without blinking, and there is no restraint for mind or eye.
