यः श्रोत्रयोरमृतं सन्निषिञ्चे- द्विद्यामविद्यस्य यथा त्वमार्यः। तं मन्येऽहं पितरं मातरं च तस्मै न द्रुह्येत्कृतमस्य जानन्
"He who pours the nectar of knowledge into the ears of one ignorant, as you, noble one, have done, I regard as both father and mother; to such a one, knowing his deed, one should never act with hostility."
ऋतस्य दातारमनुत्तमस्य निधिं निधीनामपि लब्धविद्याः। ये नाद्रियन्ते गुरुमर्चनीयं पापाँल्लोकांस्ते व्रजन्त्यप्रतिष्ठाः
"He who gives the supreme truth, the best of treasures, is the treasure among treasures for those who have gained knowledge; those who do not honor the venerable teacher, they go to worlds of sinners, unstable and without foundation."
सुरापानाद्वञ्चनां प्राप्य विद्वा- न्संज्ञानाशं चैव महातिघोरम्। दृष्ट्वा कचं चापि तथाभिरूपं पीतं तदा सुरया मोहितेन
Having committed the deception of drinking wine, and the terrible loss of consciousness, seeing Kacha thus restored, who had been swallowed due to intoxication with wine,
समन्युरुत्थाय महानुभाव- स्तदोशना विप्रहितं चिकीर्षुः। सुरापानं प्रति संजातमन्युः काव्यः स्वयं वाक्यमिदं जगाद
Rising up in anger, the great-souled Kavya, wishing to act against the Brahmin, became enraged at the drinking of wine and himself spoke these words.
यो ब्राह्मणोऽद्यप्रभृतीह कश्चि- न्मोहात्सुरां पास्यति मन्दबुद्धिः। अपेतधर्मा ब्र्हमहा चैव स स्या- दस्मिंल्लोके गर्हितः स्यात्परे च
Any Brahmin from today onward who, out of delusion and dullness of mind, drinks liquor here, having abandoned righteousness and Brahmanhood, will be condemned in this world and by others.
मया चैतां विप्रधर्मोक्तिसीमां मर्यादां वै स्थापितां सर्वलोके। सन्तो विप्राः शुश्रुवांसो गुरूणां देवा लोकाश्चोपशृण्वन्तु सर्वे
I have established this boundary of Brahmin duty for all the worlds; let virtuous Brahmins, attentive to their teachers, and all the gods and beings listen to it.
इतीदमुक्त्वा स महानुभाव- स्तपोनिधीनां निधिरप्रमेयः। तान्दानवान्दैवविमूढबुद्धी- निदं समाहूय वचोऽभ्युवाच
Having spoken thus, that great-souled one, the unfathomable treasure of ascetics, summoned those Danavas whose minds were bewildered by the gods, and addressed them with these words.
आचक्षे वो दानवा बालिशाः स्थ सिद्धः कचो वत्स्यति मत्सकाशे। सञ्जीविनीं प्राप्य विद्यां महात्मा तुल्यप्रभावो ब्राह्मणो ब्रह्मभूतः
I declare to you, O Danavas, you are childish; the accomplished Kacha will remain with me. Having obtained the Sanjivani knowledge, that great-souled Brahmin, equal in brilliance and become Brahman, will stay.
योऽकार्षीद्दुष्करं कर्म देवानां कारणात्कचः। न तत्किर्तिर्जरां गच्छेद्याज्ञीयश्च भविष्यति
Kacha performed the difficult deed for the sake of the gods; his fame will not fade with age, and he will be worthy of sacrifice.
एतावदुक्त्वा वचनं विरराम स भार्गवः। दानवा विस्मयाविष्टाः प्रययुः स्वं निवेशनम्
Having spoken thus, the descendant of Bhrigu ceased his speech; the Danavas, struck with wonder, returned to their own abode.
गुरोरुष्य सकाशे तु दश वर्षशतानि सः। अनुज्ञातः कचो गन्तुमियेष त्रिदशालयम्
After dwelling with his teacher for a hundred years, Kacha, having received permission, sought to depart for the abode of the gods.
समावृतव्रतं तं तु विसृष्टं गुरुणा कचम्। प्रस्थितं त्रिदशावासं देवयान्यब्रवीदिदम्
When Kacha, released by his teacher, set out for the dwelling of the gods, Devayani spoke to him these words.
ऋषेरङ्गिरसः पौत्र वृत्तेनाभिजनेन च। भ्राजसे विद्यया चैव तपसा च दमेन च
Grandson of the sage Angiras, you shine by conduct, lineage, knowledge, austerity, and self-restraint.
ऋषिर्यथाङ्गिरा मान्यः पितुर्मम महायशाः। तथा प्रान्यश्च पूज्यश्च मम भूयो बृहस्पतिः
Just as Angiras, my father's father, is honored and renowned, so too is my father, Brihaspati, esteemed and worthy of worship.
एवं ज्ञात्वा विजानीहि यद्ब्रवीमि तपोधन। व्रतस्थे नियमोपेते यथा वर्ताम्यहं त्वयि
Knowing this, understand what I say, O ascetic; as I have acted toward you, steadfast in vows and discipline.
स समावृतविद्यो मां भक्तां भजितुमर्हसि। गृहाण पाणिं विधिवन्मम मन्त्रपुरस्कृतम्।। कच उवाच
You, accomplished in learning, ought to accept me, your devoted one; take my hand in proper form, with mantra as prescribed.
पूज्यो मान्यश्च भगवान्यथा तव पिता मम। तथा त्वमनवद्याङ्गि पूजनीयतरा मम
Just as your father is honored and revered by you, so you, flawless one, are even more worthy of worship by me.
प्राणेभ्योऽपि प्रियतरा भार्गवस्य महात्मनः। त्वं भत्रे धर्मतः पूज्या गुरुपुत्री सदा मम
You are dearer than life itself to the great-souled descendant of Bhrigu; as my teacher's daughter, you are always worthy of reverence from me according to righteousness.
यथा मम गुरुर्नित्यं मान्यः शुक्रः पिता तव। देवयानि तथैव त्वं नैवं मां वक्तुमर्हसि
Just as my teacher, Shukra, your father, is always honored by me, so, Devayani, you too; you should not speak to me in this way.
गुरुपुत्रस्य पुत्रो वै न त्वं पुत्रश्च मे पितुः। तस्मात्पूज्यश्च मान्यश्च ममापि त्वं द्विजोत्तम
You are the daughter of my teacher, and I am the son of your father's student; therefore, you are worthy of honor and respect from me, O best of the twice-born.
असुरैर्हन्यमाने च कच त्वयि पुनःपुनः। तदाप्रभृति या प्रीतिस्तां त्वमद्य स्मरस्व मे
When the Asuras repeatedly killed you, Kacha, from that time onward, remember today the affection I had for you.
सौहार्दे चानुरागे च वेत्थ मे भक्तिमुत्तमाम्। न मामर्हसि धर्मज्ञ त्यक्तुं भक्तामनागसम्
You know my highest devotion in friendship and love; O knower of righteousness, you should not abandon your devoted, blameless one.
अनियोज्ये नियोक्तुं मां देवयानि न चार्हसि। प्रसीद सुभ्रु त्वं मह्यं गुरोर्गुरुतरा शुभे
O Devayani, you ought not to command me in what is not to be commanded; be gracious to me, O fair-browed one, for you are even more venerable to me than my teacher, O auspicious lady.
यत्रोषितं विशालाक्षि त्वया चन्द्रनिभानने। तत्राहमुषितो भद्रे कुक्षौ काव्यस्य भामिनि
Wherever you, O wide-eyed one with a face like the moon, have dwelt, there, O beautiful lady, have I also dwelt, abiding in the womb of Kavya, O radiant one.
भगिनी धर्मतो मे त्वं मैवं वोचः सुमध्यमे। सुखमस्म्युषितो भद्रे न मन्युर्विद्यते मम
By law, you are my sister, O slender-waisted one; do not speak thus. I have dwelt happily, O gentle lady, and I bear no anger.
आपृच्छे त्वां गमिष्यामि शिवमाशंस मे पथि। अविरोधेन धर्मस्य स्मर्तव्योऽस्मि कथान्तरे। अप्रमत्तोत्थिता नित्यमाराधय गुरुं मम
I take leave of you and will depart; wish me well on my journey. Without violating righteousness, remember me when the story is told again. Ever rise with care and serve my teacher devotedly.
यदि मां धर्मकामार्थे प्रत्याख्यास्यसि याचितः। ततः कच न ते विद्या सिद्धिमेषा गमिष्यति
If, when entreated for the sake of righteousness and desire, you reject me, then, O Kacha, this knowledge will not attain its fruition for you.
गुरुपुत्रीति कृत्वाऽहं प्रत्याचक्षे न दोषतः। गुरुणा चाननुज्ञातः काममेवं शपस्व माम्
I have refused you, considering you as the teacher’s daughter, and not out of fault; nor was I permitted by my teacher. Therefore, curse me as you wish.
आर्षं धर्मं ब्रुवाणोऽहं देवयानि यथा त्वया। शप्तो ह्यनर्हः शापस्य कामतोऽद्य न धर्मतः
Speaking in accordance with the ancient law, O Devayani, I have been cursed by you undeservedly, out of desire today, not according to righteousness.
तस्माद्भवत्या यः कामो न तथा स भविष्यति। ऋषिपुत्रो न ते कश्चिज्जातु पाणिं ग्रहीष्यति
Therefore, the desire you have will not be fulfilled in that way; no son of a sage will ever take your hand in marriage.
