कीचकानां तु मुख्यस्य नराणामुत्तमस्य च। वालिसुग्रीवयोर्भ्रात्रोः पुरेव कपिसिंहयोः ।। 26
It was like the battle of the chief of the Kichakas and the best of men, resembling the earlier fight between the monkey-lions Vali and Sugriva, the two brothers.
शार्दूलाविव गर्जन्तौ तार्क्ष्यनागाविवोद्यतौ। समयत्नौ समक्रोधौ पतितौ भीमकीचकौ ।। 27
Roaring like tigers, rising like Garuda and a serpent, equally determined and equally enraged, Bhima and Kichaka fell to the ground.
गजाविव मदोन्मत्तौ नदन्तौ पतितौ क्षितौ। वृषभाविव वल्मीकं मृद्गन्तौ समविक्रमौ ।।28
Like two intoxicated elephants trumpeting, they fell to the earth; like two bulls crushing an anthill, matched in strength.
ईषदागलितं चापि क्रोधाच्चावाङ्मुखं स्थितम् । कीचको बलवान्भीमं जानुभ्यां पातयद्भुवि ।। 29
With anger, Kichaka, powerful and slightly bent forward, forced Bhima down to the ground with his knees.
पातितो भीमसेनस्तु कीचकेन बलीयसा। उत्पपाताथ वेगेन दण्डाहत इवोरगः ।। 30
Bhimasena, thrown down by the mighty Kichaka, sprang up swiftly like a serpent struck by a stick.
स्पर्धया च बलोन्मत्तौ तावुभौ भीमकीचकौ। निश्शब्दं पर्यकर्षेतामन्योन्यस्य विनिर्जये ।। 31
Driven by rivalry and intoxicated with strength, Bhima and Kichaka silently dragged each other, each seeking victory.
ततस्तद्भवनश्रेष्ठं प्राकम्पत तदा भृशम्। तौ क्रोधवशमापन्नावन्योन्यमभिजघ्नतुः ।। 32
Then that excellent mansion shook violently as those two, overcome by anger, struck each other.
तलाभ्यां भीमसेनेन वक्षस्यभिहतो बली। कीचको रोषरक्ताक्षो न चचाल पदात्पदम् ।। 33
Struck on the chest by Bhimasena with his palms, the powerful Kichaka, his eyes red with rage, did not move a single step.
मुहूर्तमशकत्सोढुं वेगं तस्य महात्मनः। कीचको भीमसेनेन पश्चात्पश्चादहीयत ।। 34
For a moment Kichaka endured the force of that great-souled one, but then, step by step, he was overpowered by Bhimasena.
तं हीयमानं विज्ञाय भीमसेनो महाबलः । वक्षस्यानीय वेगेन प्रममाथ विचेतसम् ।। 35
Recognizing him as being subdued, the mighty Bhimasena drew him close with force and crushed him until he lost consciousness.
क्रोधाविष्टो विनिश्चस्य पुनश्चैनं वृकोदरः । जग्राह जयतांश्रेष्ठः केशेष्वेव भृशं तदा ।। 36
Possessed by wrath, Vrikodara, the best of victors, seized him again, grasping his hair violently.
गृहीत्वा कीचकं भीमो विरराज महाबलः । आमिषार्थे गृहीत्वैव शार्दूलो मृगयूथपम् ।। 37
Having seized Kichaka, the mighty Bhima shone, just as a tiger shines after capturing the leader of a herd for food.
पुनश्चातिबलस्तत्र कीचको बलदर्पितः । व्यायच्छन्नेव दुर्धर्षः पाण्डवेन तरस्विना ।। 38
There again, Kichaka, proud of his strength, struggled fiercely, but was subdued by the energetic Pandava.
मुष्टिना भीमसेनेन शिरस्यभिहतो भृशम्। कीचको वृत्तरक्ताक्षो गतासुरपतद्भुवि ।। 39
Struck forcefully on the head by Bhimasena's fist, Kichaka, his eyes rolling and bloodshot, fell lifeless to the ground.
आस्ये पाणी च पादौ च शिरोग्रीवां सकुण्डलाम् । काये प्रवेशयामास मृदित्वाऽङ्गानि सर्वशः ।। 40
He pressed Kichaka's hands, feet, head with earrings, and neck into his body, crushing all his limbs completely.
स तं मथितसर्वाङ्गं मांसपिण्डमथाकरोत् ।। 41
Thus, he made that one whose whole body was crushed into a lump of flesh.
तत्राग्निं स्वयमुज्ज्वाल्य पाणिसंघर्षजं बली। कष्णायै दर्शयामास भीमसेनो महाबलः ।। 42
There, Bhimasena, mighty in strength, kindled a fire himself by rubbing his hands together, and showed it to Krishna.
उवाच च महातेजा द्रौपदीं योषितां वराम्। त्वयि कामुकमत्यन्तं पापिनं पारदारिकम्। पश्यैनमेहि पाञ्चालि कामुकोऽयं मया हतः ।। 43
And the radiant Bhimasena said to Draupadi, the best of women: 'Here, O Panchali, see this man, wicked and lustful, who desired you though you are another's wife—he has been slain by me.'
प्रार्थयन्ते सुकेशान्ते ये त्वां शीलसमन्विताम् । एवं स्वपन्ति ते भीरु शेतेऽयं कीचको यथा। यस्त्वामभ्यहनद्भद्रे पदा भूमौ निपात्य च ।। 44
'Those who desire you, O gentle one with lovely hair, endowed with virtue, will meet the same fate as this Kichaka, who lies here, O timid one, just as he who struck you down and cast you to the ground.'
एवमुक्त्वा महाबाहुर्गन्धर्वेण हतं तदा। विज्ञापनार्थमन्येषां विरराम महाहवम् ।। 45
Having spoken thus, the mighty-armed one ceased from the great battle, so that others would know Kichaka had been slain by a Gandharva.
तथा स कीचकं हत्वा गत्वा रोषस्य निष्कृतिम्। आमन्त्र्य द्रौपदीं पश्चात्क्षिप्रमायान्महानसम् ।। 46
Thus, having slain Kichaka and appeased his wrath, he spoke to Draupadi and then quickly went to the kitchen.
स्नात्वाऽनुलेपनं कृत्वा व्यापूर्य च मनोरथम्। सुखोपविष्टः शयने भीमो भीमपराक्रमः ।। 47
After bathing, anointing himself, and fulfilling his purpose, Bhima of terrible prowess sat comfortably on his bed.
ततः कृष्णा यदा मेने गतं भीमं महानसम् । कीचकं घातयित्वा च द्रौपदी योषितां वरा। प्रहृष्टा गतसंत्रासा सभापालानुवाच ह ।। 48
Then, when Krishna knew that Bhima had left the kitchen after killing Kichaka, Draupadi, the best of women, overjoyed and free from fear, spoke to the guards of the assembly hall.
कीचको निहतः शेते गन्धर्वैः पतिभिर्मम। परस्त्रीकामसंतप्तं समागच्छन्त पश्यत ।। 49
'Kichaka lies slain by my Gandharva husbands! Come and see him, consumed by desire for another's wife.'
तच्छ्रुत्वा भाषितं तस्या नर्तनागाररक्षिणः । सहसैव समुत्तस्थुरुल्कामादाय सर्वशः ।। 50
Hearing her words, all the guards of the dance hall immediately rose up, each taking up a torch.
तस्यास्तं निहतं श्रुत्वा कीचकस्य सहोदराः। ततो गत्वा तु तद्वेश्म कीचकं विनिपातितम्। गतासुं ददृशुर्भूमौ रुधिरेण समुक्षितम् ।। 51
Hearing of Kichaka's death, his brothers went to that place and saw Kichaka fallen lifeless on the ground, drenched in blood.
पार्ष्णिपामिशिरोहीनं दृष्ट्वा ते विस्मिताऽभवन् ।। 52
Seeing him without heels, arms, head, and neck, they were astonished.
क्वास्य ग्रीवा क्व चरमौ क्व पामी क्व शिरः क्व दृक् । इति स्म ते परीक्षन्ते गन्धर्वेण हतं तदा ।। 53
'Where is his neck? Where are his arms? Where are his heels, his head, his eyes?' Thus they examined him, slain by a Gandharva.
अमानुषं कृतं कर्म तं दृष्ट्वा विनिपातितम् । निरीक्षन्ते ततः सर्वे परं विस्मयमागताः ।। 54
Seeing that inhuman deed and Kichaka lying there, all of them gazed in utter amazement.
तत्काले तु समागम्य सर्वे तत्रास्य बान्धवाः । रुरुदुः कीचकं दृष्ट्वा परिवार्योपतस्थिरे ।। 1
At that time, all his relatives gathered there, surrounded Kichaka, and wept when they saw him.
