दर्शनेदर्शने हन्याद्यदि जह्यां च जीवितम्। धर्मे प्रयतमानानां महान्धर्मो नशिष्यति ।। 44
If, upon seeing or not seeing him, I were to kill him or give up my life, the great righteousness of those striving for dharma would be destroyed.
समयं रक्षमाणानां दारा वो न भवन्ति च । भार्याजां रक्ष्यमाणायां प्रजा भवति रक्षिता। प्रजायां रक्ष्यमाणायामात्मा भवति रक्षितः ।। 45
When the agreement is preserved, your wives do not become another's; when the wife is protected, offspring are safeguarded; when offspring are protected, the self is secure.
वंदतां वर्णधर्मांश्च ब्राह्मणानां च मे श्रुतम् । क्षत्रियस्य सदा धर्मो नान्यो दस्युनिबर्हणात् ।। 46
I have heard the duties of the castes and of Brahmins; for a Kshatriya, there is no other duty than the removal of robbers.
पश्यतो धर्मराजस्य कीचको माऽन्वधावत । तवेव च समक्षं वै भीमसेन महाबल ।। 47
While Dharmaraja watched, Kichaka did not pursue me; and in your very presence, O mighty Bhimasena.
त्वया चाहं परित्राता भीम तस्माञ्जटासुरात् ।। 48
By you, Bhima, I was rescued from that dread Jatasura.
जयद्रथं तथैव त्वमजैषीर्भ्रातृभिः सह। जहीममपि पापिष्ठं योयं मामवमन्यते । कीचको राजवाल्लभ्याच्छोककृन्मम भारत ।। 49
You conquered Jayadratha along with your brothers; slay this most wicked one also, who scorns me—Kichaka, favored by the king, who brings me sorrow, O Bharata.
कीचकं कामसन्तप्तं भिन्धि कुम्भमिवाश्मनि । यो निमित्तमनर्थानां बहूनां मम भारत ।। 50
Break Kichaka, burning with lust, as one shatters a pot against a stone; he is the cause of many misfortunes for me, O Bharata.
तं चेञ्जीवन्तमादित्यः प्रातरभ्युदयिष्यति । विषमालोड्य पास्यामि मा कीचकवशंगमम् ।। 51
If he lives, the sun will rise tomorrow morning; after drinking poison, I will not fall under Kichaka's power.
श्रेयो हि मरणं मह्यं भीमसेन तवाग्रतः । इत्युक्त्वा प्रारुदत्कृष्णा भीमस्योरसि संश्रिता ।। 52
It is better for me to die before you, Bhimasena; having spoken thus, Krishna wept, clinging to Bhima's chest.
भीमश्च तां परिष्वज्य महत्सान्त्वं प्रयुज्य च। कीचकं मनसाऽगच्छत्सृक्किणी परिलेलिहन् ।। 53
Bhima embraced her, offering great comfort, and in his mind went to Kichaka, licking his lips.
आश्वासयित्वा बहुशो भृशमार्तां सुमध्यमाम्। हेतुतत्वार्थसंयुक्तैर्वचोभिर्द्रुपदात्मजाम् ।। 54
He consoled the deeply afflicted, slender-waisted daughter of Drupada many times, with words joined to reason and truth.
प्रमृज्य वदनं तस्याः पाणिनाऽश्रुसमाकुलम्। उवाच चैनां दुःखार्तां भीमः क्रोधसमन्वितः ।। 55
Wiping her tear-filled face with his hand, Bhima, filled with anger, spoke to her, who was suffering.
तथा भद्रे करिष्यामि यथा त्वं भीरु भाषसे। अद्यैनं सूदयिष्यामि कीचकं सह बान्धवैः ।। 1
So, gentle one, I will do as you say, O timid lady; today I will slay Kichaka along with his kin.
अस्याः प्रदोषे शर्वर्याः कुरुष्वानेन संविदम् । दुःखं शोकं च निर्धूय याज्ञसेनि शुचिस्मिते ।। 2
Tonight, at this evening hour, make an agreement with him; cast off your sorrow and grief, O Yajnaseni, pure-smiling one.
यैषा नर्तनशालेह मत्स्यराजेन कारिता। दिवात्र कन्या नृत्यन्ति रात्रौ यान्ति तथा गृहं ।। 3
This is the dancing hall built by the king of the Matsyas; here, maidens dance by day and go home at night.
तत्रास्ति शयनं भीरु दृढाङ्गं सुप्रतिष्ठितम्। तत्रैनं दर्शयिष्यामि पूर्वप्रेतान्पितामहान् । त्वद्दर्शनसमुत्थेन कामेनाकुलितेन्द्रियम् ।। 4
There is a bed, O timid one, strong and well-established; there I will show him the ancestors who have passed, his senses agitated by desire arising from seeing you.
संकेतं सूतपुत्रस्य कारयस्व शुभानने। यथा परे न पश्येयुः कुर्वन्तीं तेन संविदम् ।। 5
Arrange a meeting with the charioteer's son, O auspicious one, so that others do not see you making an agreement with him.
तथा कुरुष्व कल्याणि यथा सन्निहितो भवेत्। तथा कुर्याश्च संकेतं सूतपुत्रस्य संवृतम् ।। 6
Do so, O blessed lady, in such a way that he will be nearby, and let the meeting with the charioteer's son be kept secret.
आवयोः संगमं भीरु यथा मार्त्यो न बुध्यति । कीचकस्य विनाशाय तथा कुरु नृपात्मजे ।। 7
Let our union, O timid one, be such that no mortal becomes aware, and thus, O princess, act for the destruction of Kīcaka.
तत्र तौ कथयित्वा तु बाष्पमुत्सृज्य दुःखितौ। रात्रिशेषं तमत्युग्रं धारयामासतुर्हृदि ।। 8
There, after speaking together, the two, sorrowful, shed tears and endured that dreadful remainder of the night in their hearts.
भीमेन च प्रतिज्ञाते कीचकस्य वधे तदा। द्रौपदी च सुदेष्णायाः प्रविवेश पुनर्गृहम् ।। 9
When Bhīma had vowed to kill Kīcaka, Draupadī entered Sudeṣṇā’s house once again.
तस्यां रजन्यां व्युष्टायां प्रातरुत्थाय कीचकः। गत्वा राजकुलायैव द्रौपदीमिदमब्रवीत् ।। 10
When that night had passed, Kīcaka rose in the morning, went to the royal palace, and spoke these words to Draupadī.
यत्त्वाऽहं पश्यतो राज्ञः पातयित्वा पदाऽहनम् । न कंचिल्लभसे नाथमभिपन्ना बलीयसा ।। 11
When I threw you down with my foot before the king’s eyes, you found no protector, though you were attacked by one strong.
प्रवादेन तु मात्स्यानामयं राजेति चोच्यते। अहमेव हि राजा वै मात्स्यानां वाहिनीपतिः ।। 12
By the rumor among the Matsyas, it is said this is the king, but I alone am truly the king and commander of the Matsyas.
सा सुखं प्रतिपद्यस्व दासो भीरु भवामि ते। न ह्यहं त्वामृते भीरु चिरं जीवितुमुत्सहे ।। 13
Accept happiness, O timid one; I will become your servant. Without you, O timid one, I cannot bear to live long.
अहन्यहनि सुश्रोणि शतनिष्कं ददामि ते। दासीशतं च ते दद्यां दासानामपि चापरम् ।। 14
Every day, O lovely-hipped one, I will give you a hundred gold coins, and a hundred maidservants, and more servants besides.
रथांश्चाश्वतरीयुक्तानस्तु नौ भीरु संगमः । सुदासानां सहस्रं च महिषाणां सहस्रकम् ।। 15
Chariots drawn by mules, O timid one, for our union, and a thousand good servants, and a thousand buffaloes.
अन्तःपुरसहस्रं च हेमकूटसहस्रकम्। तुभ्यं दास्यामि सर्वाणि राजार्हाण्यम्बराणि च ।। 16
A thousand inner chambers, a thousand golden treasures, I will give you all, and garments fit for a queen.
एतन्मे वचनं सत्यं प्रतिपद्यस्व कीचक। न ते सखा वा भ्राता वा जानीयात्संगमं मया ।। 17
This is my true promise, O Kīcaka; accept it. Let neither your friend nor brother know of our union.
अनुप्रवादाद्भीताऽस्मि गन्धर्वाणां यशस्विनाम् । अनुबोधाद्गनर्थः स्यादयशश्च महद्भवेत। एतन्मे प्रतिजानीहि ततोऽहं वशगा तव ।। 18
I am afraid of the famous Gandharvas because of rumors; if they learn, there may be harm and great disgrace. Swear this to me, and then I will be yours.
