कल्याणरूपा सैरन्ध्री वललश्चापि सुन्दरः। स्त्रीणां चित्तं हि दुर्ज्ञेयं युक्तरूपौ हि मे मतौ ।। 82
Sairandhri is beautiful, and Valala is also handsome; truly, the minds of women are hard to know, yet I think they are well matched.
सैरन्ध्री प्रियसंवासान्नित्यं करुणवादिनी। अस्मिन्राजकुले चैतौ तुल्यकालनिवासिनौ ।। 83
Sairandhri, always gentle in speech and dear in company, and he—both dwell in this royal household at the same time.
इति ब्रुवाणा वाक्यानि सा मां नित्यमजीजपत् । क्रुध्यन्तीं मां च संप्रेक्ष्य पर्यशङ्कत मां त्वयि ।। 84
Thus she would always speak these words to me, and, seeing me angry, she became suspicious of me regarding you.
तस्यां तथा ब्रुवन्त्यां तु भीमो भीमपराक्रमः। नोवाच किंचिद्वचनं संरम्भाद्रक्तलोचनः ।। 85
While she spoke in this way, Bhima of terrible strength said nothing, his eyes red with anger.
ज्ञात्वा-तु रुषितं भीमं द्रौपदी पुनरब्रवीत्। शोके यौधिष्ठिरे मग्ना नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे ।। 86
Seeing Bhima enraged, Draupadi spoke again: 'Sunk in grief for Yudhishthira, I cannot bear to live.'
यंस्तु देवान्मनुष्यांश्च सर्वानेकरथोऽजयत्। सोयं राज्ञो विराटस्य कन्यानां नर्तको युवा। आस्ते वेषप्रतिच्छन्नः कन्यानां परिचारकः ।। 87
He who conquered all gods and men in a single chariot—now, disguised, sits as a dancer for the king of Virata’s maidens, serving among the girls.
योऽतर्पयदमेयात्मा खाण्डवे जातवेदसम्। सोऽन्तःपुरगतः पार्थः कूपेऽग्निरिव संवृतः ।। 88
He whose immeasurable spirit once satisfied the blazing fire at Khandava—now, Partha, is hidden in the women’s quarters, like fire covered in a well.
यस्माद्भयममित्राणां सदैव पुरुषर्षभात्। स लोकपरिभूतेन वेषेणास्ते धनंजयः ।। 89
He from whom the enemies always felt fear—Dhananjaya, the best of men—now sits, despised by the world, in disguise.
यस्यं ज्यातलनिर्घोषात्समकम्पन्त शत्रवः। षण्डरूपं वहन्तं तं गीतं नृत्तावलम्बनम् । कुर्वन्तमर्जुनं दृष्ट्वा न मे स्वास्थ्यं मनो व्रजेत् ।। 90
At the sound of whose bowstring the foes would tremble—now, seeing Arjuna, bearing the form of a eunuch, singing and dancing among the maidens, my mind finds no peace.
स्त्रियो गीतस्वरात्तस्य मुदिताः पर्युपासते ।। 91
The women, delighted by his singing voice, gather around him.
किरीटं सूर्यसंकाशं यस्य मूर्धन्यशोभत। वेणीविकृतकेशान्तः सोऽयमद्य धनंजयः ।। 92
He whose crown, shining like the sun, once adorned his head—he is now Dhananjaya, with his hair bound at the end in a braid.
यस्मिन्नस्त्राणि दिव्यानि समस्तानि महात्मनि । आधारः सर्वविद्यानां यो धारयति कुण्डले ।। 93
He in whom all the divine weapons abide, the great-souled one, the very foundation of all knowledge, who wears the earrings.
यं वै राजसहस्राणि तेजसाऽप्रतिमं भुवि । समरे नातिवर्तन्ते वेलामिव महोर्मयः ।। 94
Him, whom thousands of kings on earth, unmatched in brilliance, cannot surpass in battle, just as mighty waves cannot cross the shore.
सोयं राज्ञो विराटस्य कन्यानां नर्तको युवा। आस्ते वेषप्रतिच्छन्नः कन्यानां परिचारकः ।। 95
That very youth, now a dancer among King Virata’s maidens, sits concealed in disguise, serving among the princesses.
यस्य स्म रथनिर्घोषात्समकम्पत मेदिनी। सपर्वतवनाकाशा सहस्थावरजङ्गमा ।। 96
At whose chariot’s roar, the earth would tremble, along with its mountains, forests, sky, and all creatures, both moving and unmoving.
यस्मिञ्जाते महेष्वासे कुन्त्याः प्रीतिरवर्धत। न स शोचति मामद्य भीमसेन तवानुजः ।। 97
At whose birth, the mighty archer, Kunti’s joy increased—he, Bhimasena’s younger brother, does not grieve for me today.
विभूषितमलंकारैः कुण्डलैः परिपातुकैः। कम्बुपाणिमथायान्तं दृष्ट्वा सीदति मे मनः ।। 98
Seeing him adorned with ornaments, earrings, and bracelets, approaching with conch-shaped hands, my heart sinks.
वेणीविकृतकेशान्तं भीमधन्वानमर्जुनम्। कन्यापरिवृतं दृष्ट्वा शोकं गच्छति मे मनः ।। 99
Seeing Arjuna, the mighty archer, his hair tied in a braid, surrounded by maidens, my heart is filled with sorrow.
यदा ह्येनं परिवृतं कन्याभिर्देवरूपिणम्। प्रच्छन्नमिव मातङ्गं परिपूर्णं करेणुभिः ।। 100
Whenever I see him, godlike in form, surrounded by maidens, hidden like an elephant among she-elephants, my heart is troubled.
मात्स्यं पार्थं च गायन्तं विराटं समुपस्थितम्। पश्यामि तूर्यमध्यस्थं दृष्ट्वा मुह्यति मे मनः ।। 101
When I see Partha, the Matsya bard, standing before Virata, singing amidst the music, my mind is bewildered.
नूनमार्या न जानाति कृच्छ्रं प्राप्तं धनंजयम्। अजातशत्रुं कौरव्यं मग्नं द्युर्द्यूतदेविनम् ।। 102
Surely the noble lady does not know the hardship Dhananjaya has endured—the Kaurava, unconquered in battle, plunged into the game of dice.
ऐन्द्रवारुणवायव्यब्रह्माग्नेयैः सवैष्णवैः । अग्नीन्संतर्पयन्पार्थः सर्वशत्रुनिबर्हणः। दिव्यैरस्त्रैरमेयात्मा सर्वांश्चैकरथोऽजयत् ।। 103
Partha, destroyer of all foes, satisfied the fires with offerings of Indra, Varuna, Vayu, Brahma, Agni, and Vishnu weapons; with divine missiles, immeasurable in spirit, he conquered all with his single chariot.
कौबेरं वैष्णवं शैवमस्त्राण्यन्यानि भारत। दर्शयन्नस्त्रवीर्यं च वासुदेवसहायवान् ।। 104
Displaying the Kubera, Vishnu, Shiva, and other weapons, showing the might of his arms, aided by Vasudeva.
दिव्यं गान्धर्वमस्त्रं च वायव्यमथ वैष्णवम्। ब्राह्मं पाशुपतं चैव स्थूणाकर्णं च दर्शयन् ।। 105
He revealed the divine Gandharva, Vayu, Vishnu, Brahma, Pashupata, and Sthunakarna weapons.
पौलोमान्कालकेयांश्च इन्द्रशत्रून्महाबलान्। निवातकवचैः सार्धं घोरानेकरथोऽजयत्। सोन्तःपुरगतः पार्थः कूपेऽग्निरिव संवृतः ।। 106
He, Partha, with a single chariot, defeated the mighty Paulomas, Kalakeyas, Indra’s enemies, and the fierce Nivatakavachas; hidden in the inner chambers, like fire concealed in a well.
यो वै महातपः कुर्वन्महाबलपराक्रमः । युद्धेन तोषयामास शंकरं शूलपाणिनम् ।। 107
He, performing great austerity and possessing immense strength and valor, pleased Shankara, the wielder of the trident, through battle.
कन्यापुरगतं दृष्ट्वा गोष्ठेष्विव महावृषम्। स्त्रीवेषविकृतं पार्थं कुन्तीं गच्छति मे मनः ।। 108
Seeing Partha, disguised in women’s attire, among the maidens’ quarters, like a great bull among cows, my heart turns to Kunti.
यः स्त्रीभिर्नित्यसंपन्नो रूपेणास्त्रेण मेधया । सोऽश्वबन्धो विराटस्य पश्य कालस्य पर्ययम् ।। 109
He who was always surrounded by women, endowed with beauty, weapons, and wisdom—now see, by the turn of fate, he is Virata’s horse-keeper.
राजकन्याश्च वेश्याश्च विशां दुहितरश्च याः। सर्वाः सारयुता नार्यो दामग्रन्थिवशं गताः । प्रेष्यकर्मणि तं दृष्ट्वा शोचामि विलपामि च ।। 120
Royal maidens, courtesans, and daughters of the people—all these women, adorned with jewelry, are bound by the ties of servitude. Seeing them engaged in menial tasks, I grieve and lament.
विराटमुपतिष्ठन्तं दर्शयन्तं च वाजिनम्। अभ्यकीर्यन्त बृन्दानि दामग्रन्थिमुदीक्षितुम् । विनयन्तं जवेनाश्वान्धर्मराजस्य पश्यतः ।। 111
Crowds gathered to behold the knot of the horse's reins, as Virata stood by, displaying the steed. They watched him restrain the horses with speed, while Dharma's king looked on.
