Having once attained the entire earth, radiant with his splendor, Yudhishthira now sits as a star in King Virata's assembly.
The best of sages once attended him in the assembly as king; now, see the Pandava sitting among others, O Pandava.
Who would not feel sorrow, seeing the righteous king Yudhishthira—faultless and wise—constrained for the sake of life?
He whom the whole earth once served in the assembly—see, O Bharata, how he now sits serving another.
Afflicted by many kinds of suffering, as if without protector, standing in the midst of an ocean of grief—why do you not see me, Bhima?
But this which I will say to you now, O Bharata, is even more painful for me; do not be angry with me, for I speak out of sorrow.
You, always fighting with tigers, buffaloes, and elephants, while Kaikeyi’s daughter watched—then I was overwhelmed with shame.
The women in the inner chambers laughed, watching my actions.
Then Kaikeyi’s daughter rose and addressed them all, looking at me—faultless in form, yet as if struck down by despair.
Out of affection from living together, she—smiling sweetly—pitied this mighty warrior as he fought.
Sairandhri is beautiful, and Valala is also handsome; truly, the minds of women are hard to know, yet I think they are well matched.
Sairandhri, always gentle in speech and dear in company, and he—both dwell in this royal household at the same time.
Thus she would always speak these words to me, and, seeing me angry, she became suspicious of me regarding you.
While she spoke in this way, Bhima of terrible strength said nothing, his eyes red with anger.
Seeing Bhima enraged, Draupadi spoke again: 'Sunk in grief for Yudhishthira, I cannot bear to live.'
He who conquered all gods and men in a single chariot—now, disguised, sits as a dancer for the king of Virata’s maidens, serving among the girls.
He whose immeasurable spirit once satisfied the blazing fire at Khandava—now, Partha, is hidden in the women’s quarters, like fire covered in a well.
He from whom the enemies always felt fear—Dhananjaya, the best of men—now sits, despised by the world, in disguise.
At the sound of whose bowstring the foes would tremble—now, seeing Arjuna, bearing the form of a eunuch, singing and dancing among the maidens, my mind finds no peace.
The women, delighted by his singing voice, gather around him.
He whose crown, shining like the sun, once adorned his head—he is now Dhananjaya, with his hair bound at the end in a braid.
He in whom all the divine weapons abide, the great-souled one, the very foundation of all knowledge, who wears the earrings.
Him, whom thousands of kings on earth, unmatched in brilliance, cannot surpass in battle, just as mighty waves cannot cross the shore.
That very youth, now a dancer among King Virata’s maidens, sits concealed in disguise, serving among the princesses.
At whose chariot’s roar, the earth would tremble, along with its mountains, forests, sky, and all creatures, both moving and unmoving.
At whose birth, the mighty archer, Kunti’s joy increased—he, Bhimasena’s younger brother, does not grieve for me today.
Seeing him adorned with ornaments, earrings, and bracelets, approaching with conch-shaped hands, my heart sinks.
Seeing Arjuna, the mighty archer, his hair tied in a braid, surrounded by maidens, my heart is filled with sorrow.
Whenever I see him, godlike in form, surrounded by maidens, hidden like an elephant among she-elephants, my heart is troubled.
When I see Partha, the Matsya bard, standing before Virata, singing amidst the music, my mind is bewildered.
