जगामावासमेवाथ तदा सा द्रुपदात्मजा। कृत्वा शौचं यथान्यायं कृष्णा सा तनुमध्यमा ।। 2
Then the daughter of Drupada went to her dwelling, having performed purification as prescribed, that slender-waisted Krishna.
गात्राणि वाससी चैव प्रक्षाल्य सलिलेन सा। चिन्तयामास रुदती तस्य दुःखस्य निर्णयम् ।। 3
She washed her body and garments with water, and, weeping, pondered the outcome of her sorrow.
किं करोमि क्व गच्छामि कथं कार्यं भवेन्मम। इत्येवं चिन्तयित्वा सा भीमं तं मनसाऽगमत्। अन्यः कर्ता विना भीमान्न मेऽद्य मनसेप्सितम् ।। 4
What shall I do, where shall I go, how should I act? Thinking thus, she turned her mind to Bhima; apart from Bhima, there is no one today whom my heart desires.
प्रादुर्भूते क्षणे रात्रौ विहाय शयनं स्वकम्। दुःखेन महता युक्ता मानसेन मनस्विनी । प्राद्रवन्नाथमिच्छन्ती तथा नाथवती सती ।। 5
When night had fallen, she left her own bed, afflicted with great distress in her mind, and, seeking a protector, the noble lady ran forth, as one who has a protector.
सा वै महानसं प्राप्य भीमसेनं सुचिस्मिता। उपासर्पत पाञ्चाली वासितेव महागजम् ।। 6
She, of beautiful smile, reached the kitchen and approached Bhimasena, like Panchali drawing near a great elephant.
सर्वश्वेतेव माहेयी वने वृद्धा त्रिहायणी। महर्पभं यथा सुप्तमर्थिनी वननिर्झरे । संप्रसुप्तं तथा सिंहिं मृगराजवधूरिव ।। 7
Like a white mare in the forest, aged and three years past, like a seeker approaching a sleeping one at a forest stream, so did the lioness, wife of the king of beasts, approach the sleeping lion.
अभिप्रसार्य बाहुभ्यां पतिं सुप्तं समाश्लिषत् । सुजातं गोमतीतीरे सालं वल्लीव पुष्पिता ।। 8
Stretching out her arms, she embraced her sleeping husband, like a blossoming creeper entwining a sal tree on the bank of the Gomati.
परिस्पृस्य च पाणिभ्यां पतिं सुप्तमबोधयत्। श्रीरिवान्या महोत्साहं सुप्तं विष्णुमिवार्णवे । क्षौमावदाते शयने शयानं वृषभेक्षणम् ।। 9
Touching her sleeping husband with her hands, she awakened him, like Lakshmi stirring the mighty Vishnu asleep in the ocean, lying on a pure linen bed, the bull-eyed one.
यथा शची देवराजं रुद्राणी शंकरं यथा। ब्रह्माणमिव सावित्री देवसेना गुहं यथा ।। 10
As Shachi does to the king of gods, as Rudrani to Shankara, as Savitri to Brahma, as Devasena to Guha.
दिशागजसमाकारं गजं गजवधूरिव । भीमं प्राबोधयत्कान्ता लक्ष्मीर्दामोदरं यथा ।। 11
Like an elephant's mate to an elephant resembling the guardians of the directions, the beloved awakened Bhima, as Lakshmi does to Damodara.
वीणेव मधुरालापा स्वरं गान्धारमाश्रिता। अभ्यभाषत पाञ्चाली कौरवं पाण्डुनन्दनम् ।। 12
With sweet speech like a vina, adopting the Gandhara note, Panchali addressed the Kaurava, son of Pandu.
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ किं शेषे भीमसेन मृतो यथा। न मृतः स हि पापीयान्भार्यामालम्ब्य जीवति ।। 13
Rise, rise! Why do you lie as if dead, Bhimasena? He is not dead, for the wicked one lives, clinging to his wife.
तस्मिञ्जीवति पापिष्ठे सेनावाहे मम द्विषि । तत्कर्मं कृतवत्यद्य कथं निद्रां निषेवसे ।। 14
While that most sinful one lives, my enemy, the leader of the army, having committed that act today, how can you indulge in sleep?
सुखसुप्तश्च तं शब्दं निशम्य स वृकोदरः। संवेदितः कुरुश्रेष्ठः तोत्रैरिव महागजः ।। 15
Hearing that sound while sleeping comfortably, Vrikodara, best of the Kurus, was roused, like a great elephant by goads.
स वै विहाय शयनं यस्मिन्सुप्तः प्रबोधितः। उदतिष्ठदमेयात्मा पर्यङ्के सोत्तरच्छदे ।। 16
Leaving his bed, awakened from sleep, the one of indomitable spirit arose from the couch with its upper covering.
उपवेश्य च दुर्धर्पः पाञ्चालकुलवर्धनीम्। अथाब्रवीद्राजपुत्रीं कौरव्यो महिषीं प्रियाम् ।। 17
Seating the proud one, the enhancer of the Panchala line, he then spoke to the princess, his beloved queen of the Kauravas.
केनार्थेन च संप्राप्ता त्वरितेव ममान्तिकम्। न ते प्रकृतिमान्वर्णः कृशा त्वमभिलक्ष्यसे ।। 18
For what purpose have you come to me so hastily? Your appearance is not as usual; you seem emaciated.
प्रकाशं यदि वा गुह्यं सर्वमाख्यातुमर्हसि। आचक्ष्व त्वमशेषेण सर्वं विद्यामहं यथा ।। 19
Whether openly or secretly, you ought to tell me everything; speak fully so that I may know all.
सुखं वा यदि वा दुःखं शुभं वा यदि वाऽशुभम्। यद्यप्यसुकरं कर्म कृतमित्यवधारय ।। 20
Whether happiness or sorrow, auspicious or inauspicious, even if the task is difficult, consider it as accomplished.
अहमेव हि ते कृष्णे विश्वास्यः सर्वकर्मसु। अहमापत्सु चापि त्वां मोक्षयामि पुनः पुनः ।। 21
O Krishna, in all your undertakings, I alone am to be trusted; in times of danger, I will rescue you again and again.
शीघ्रमुक्त्वा यथाकामं यत्ते कार्यं विवक्षितम्। गच्छ वै शयनायैव यावदन्यो न बुध्यते ।। 22
Quickly say whatever you wish, whatever task you desire; then go to rest before anyone else becomes aware.
सा लञ्जमाना भीता च अधोमुखमुखी ततः। नोवाच किंचिद्वचनं बाष्पदूषितलोचना ।। 23
She, ashamed and afraid, her face turned downward, did not speak a word, her eyes filled with tears.
अथाब्रवीद्भीमपराक्रमो बली वृकोदरः पाण्डवमुख्यसंमतः। प्रब्रूहि किं ते करवाणि सुन्दरि प्रियं प्रिये वारणमत्तगामिनि ।। 24
Then Vrikodara, mighty in valor, esteemed among the foremost Pandavas, spoke: 'Speak, O beautiful one, what shall I do for you, beloved, O one with the gait of a proud elephant?'
अशोच्यता कुतस्तस्या यस्या भर्ता युधिष्ठिरः। जानन्सर्वाणि दुःखानि किं मां भीमानुपृच्छसि ।। 25
Why should she grieve, whose husband is Yudhishthira? Knowing all sorrows, Bhima, why do you question me?
यन्मां दासीप्रवादेन प्रातिकामी तदाऽनयत्। सभायां परिषन्मध्ये तन्मे मर्माणि कृन्तति ।। 26
When Pratikami brought me, calling me a slave, into the assembly before all, that still cuts me to the core.
विकृष्टा हास्तिनपुरे सभायां राजसंसदि। दुःशासनेन केशान्ते परामृष्टा रजस्वला ।। 27
Dragged in the royal court at Hastinapura, seized by the hair by Duhshasana while menstruating, I was humiliated.
क्षत्रियैस्तत्र कर्णाद्यैर्दृष्टा दुर्योधनेन च। श्वशुराभ्यां च भीष्मेण विदुरेण च धीमता। द्रोणेन च महाबाहो कृपेण च परंतप ।। 28
There, I was seen by the Kshatriyas, by Karna and others, by Duryodhana, by my fathers-in-law Bhishma and Vidura the wise, by Drona the mighty-armed, and by Kripa, scorcher of foes.
साऽहं श्वशुरयोर्मध्ये भ्रातृमध्ये च पाण्डव। केशे गृहीत्वा च सभां नीता जीवति वै त्वयि ।। 29
I, in the midst of my fathers-in-law and among my brothers, was seized by the hair and led into the assembly, while you were still alive.
विप्रयुक्ता ततश्चाहं वने राज्याद्वनं गता। साऽहं वने दुर्वसतिं वसती त्वध्वकर्शिता । जटासुरपरिक्लेशात्प्राप्तापि सुमहद्भयम् ।। 30
Then, separated from the kingdom, I went to the forest; there, enduring hardship, oppressed by the ascetic Jatasura, I faced great fear.
पार्थिवस्य सुता नाम कानु जीवेन मादृशी । अनुभूय भृशं दुःखमन्यत्र द्रौपदीं प्रभो।। 31
What daughter of a king, having suffered such intense sorrow as I have, could still live, except for Draupadi, O lord?
