तद्युद्धमभवद्धोरमशस्त्रं बाहुतेजसा। बलप्राणेन शूराणां समाजोत्सवसन्निधौ ।। 45
That battle became fierce, weaponless, relying on the strength of their arms, in the presence of the assembled heroes at the festival.
अरज्यत जनः सर्वः सोत्क्रुष्टनिनदोत्थितः। बलिनोः संयुगे राजन्वृत्रवासवयोरिव ।। 46
All the people were agitated, rising with shouts and cries, as the two strong men fought, like Vritra and Vasava.
प्रकर्षणाकर्षणयोरभ्याकर्षविकर्षणैः। आकर्षतुरथान्योन्यं जानुभिश्चापि जन्घतुः ।। 47
With pulling, dragging, and counter-pulling, they drew each other close, and with their knees, they struck at each other's thighs.
ततः शब्देन महता भर्त्सयन्तौ परस्परम्। व्यूढोरस्कौ दीर्घभुजौ नियुद्धकुशलावुभौ। बाहुभिः समसज्जेतामायसैः परिघैरिव ।। 48
Then, with great noise, threatening each other, both broad-chested, long-armed, and skilled in wrestling, they grappled with their arms like iron clubs.
उत्पपाताथ वेगेन मल्लं कक्षे गृहीतवान्। पार्श्वं निगृह्य हस्तेन पातयामास मल्लकम् ।। 49
Then, with great speed, he seized the wrestler by the waist; gripping his side with his hand, he threw the wrestler down.
चकर्ष दोर्भ्यामुत्पात्य भीमो मल्लममित्रहा। निनदं तमभिक्रोशञ्शार्दूल इव वारणम् ।। 50
Bhima, slayer of enemies, lifted the wrestler with his arms and dragged him, roaring loudly like a tiger confronting an elephant.
समुद्यम्य महाबाहुर्भ्रामयामास वीर्यवान् । ततो मल्लाश्च मत्स्याश्च विस्मयं चक्रिरे परम् ।। 51
The mighty-armed and valiant Bhima raised him up and spun him around; at this, the wrestlers and the Matsyas were utterly astonished.
भ्रामयित्वा शतगुणं गतसत्वमचेतनम् । प्रत्यपिंषन्महाबाहुर्मल्लं भुवि वृकोदरः।। 52
Having spun him a hundred times, until his strength was gone and he was unconscious, the mighty-armed Vrikodara crushed the wrestler against the ground.
तस्मिन्विनिहते वीरे जीमूते लोकविश्रुते । विराटः परमं हर्षमगच्छद्वान्धवैः सह ।। 53
When that renowned hero, Jimuta, was defeated, King Virata, together with his relatives, experienced great joy.
प्रहर्षात्प्रददौ वित्तं बहु राज महामनाः। वललाय महारङ्गे यथा वैश्रवणस्तथा ।। 54
Out of delight, the great-minded king generously gave wealth; he moved about the grand arena like Kubera himself.
एवं स सुबहून्मल्लान्पुरुषांश्च महाबलान् । विनिघ्नन्मत्स्यराजस्य प्रीतिमाहरदुत्तमाम् ।। 55
Thus, as he defeated many powerful wrestlers and men, he brought supreme pleasure to the king of the Matsyas.
यदाऽस्य तुल्यः पुरुषो न कश्चितत्र विद्यते । ततो व्याघ्रैश्च सिंहैश्च द्विरदैश्चाप्ययोधयत् ।। 56
When no man there was found equal to him, he then fought with tigers, lions, and elephants.
विराटेन प्रदत्तानि चित्राणि विविधानि च। स्थितेभ्यः पुरुषेभ्यश्च दत्त्वा द्रव्याणि जग्मिवान् ।। 57
Virata gave various splendid gifts to those men who remained, and after distributing wealth, he departed.
पुनरन्तःपुरगतः स्त्रीणां मध्ये वृकोदरः। योध्यते स विराटस्य गजैः सिंहैर्महाबलैः ।। 58
Vrikodara again entered the inner chambers and, among the women, fought with Virata’s mighty elephants and lions.
बीभत्सुरपि गीतेन नृत्तेनापि च पाण्डवः। विराटं तोषयामास सर्वाश्चान्तःपुरस्त्रियः ।। 59
Bhimasena, the Pandava, also pleased Virata and all the women of the inner chambers with song and dance.
अश्वैर्विनीतैर्जवनैस्तत्रतत्र समागतः। तोपयामास राजानं नकुलो नृपसत्तमम्। तस्मै प्रदेयं प्रायच्छत्प्रीतो राजा धनं बहु ।। 60
Nakula, gathering swift and well-trained horses from various places, presented them to the noble king; pleased, the king gave him abundant wealth.
विनीतान्वृपभान्दृष्ट्वा सहदेवस्य चाभितः। धनं ददौ बहुविधं विराटः पुरुषर्षभः ।। 61
Seeing the well-trained horses brought by Sahadeva, Virata, the foremost among men, gave him much wealth of many kinds.
द्रौपदी प्रेक्ष्य तान्सर्वान्क्लिश्यमानान्महारथान् । नातिप्रीतमना राजन्निश्वासपरमाऽभवत् ।। 62
Draupadi, observing all those great warriors suffering, was not very pleased in her heart, O king, and became deeply sorrowful.
एवं ते न्यवसंस्तत्र प्रच्छन्नाः पुरुषर्षभाः । कर्माणि तस्य कुर्वाणा विराटनृपतेस्तदा ।। 63
Thus, those foremost men dwelled there in concealment, performing tasks for King Virata at that time.
वसमानेषु पार्थेषु मत्स्यस्य नगरे तदा। महारथेषु च्छन्नेषु मासा दश समाययुः ।। 1
While the Pandavas resided in the city of the Matsya, concealed as great warriors, ten months passed.
याज्ञसेनी सुदेष्णां तु शुश्रूषन्ती विशांपते । आवसत्परिचारार्हा सुदुःखं जनमेजय ।। 2
Yajnaseni, serving Sudeshna, O lord of men, lived there, worthy of service, enduring great hardship, O Janamejaya.
तथा चरन्ती पाञ्चाली सुदेष्णाया निवेशने। ता देवीं तोपयामास तथा चान्तःपुरस्त्रियः ।। 3
Thus, Panchali, moving about in Sudeshna’s residence, pleased the queen and also the women of the inner chambers.
तस्मिन्वर्षे गतप्राये कीचकस्तु महाबलः। सेनापतिर्विराटस्य ददर्श द्रुपदात्मजाम् ।। 4
As that year was drawing to a close, Kichaka, the mighty commander of Virata, saw the daughter of Drupada.
तां दृष्ट्वा देवगर्भायां चरन्तीं देवतामिव । कीचकः कामयामास कामबाणप्रपीडितः ।। 5
Seeing her, radiant as if born of the gods and moving like a goddess, Kichaka was seized by desire, pierced by the arrows of passion.
स तु कामाग्निसंतप्तः सुदेष्णामभिगम्य वै। प्रहसन्निव सेनानीरिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ।। 6
Burning with the fire of longing, Kichaka approached Sudeshna, and, smiling, the commander spoke these words.
नेयं मया जातु पुरेह दृष्टा राज्ञी विराटस्य निवेशने शुभा। रूपेण चोन्मादयतीव मां भृशं गन्धेन जाता मदिरेव भामिनी ।। 7
Never before in this city or in the palace of King Virata have I seen this beautiful woman; her form stirs me deeply, and her fragrance, like wine, intoxicates me.
का देवरूपा हृदयंगमा शुभे ह्याचक्ष्व मे कस्य कुतोत्र शोभने। चित्तं हि निर्मथ्य करोति मां वशे न चान्यदत्रौपधमस्ति मे मतम् ।। 8
Who is this divine-looking woman, enchanting to the heart? Tell me, O lovely one, whose is she, and from where has she come? She has seized my mind and brought it under her sway; I see no fault in this, in my view.
अहो तवेयं परिचारिका शुभा प्रत्यग्ररूपा प्रतिभाति मामियम्। अयुक्तरूपं हि करोति कर्म ते प्रशास्तु मां यच्च ममास्ति किंचन ।। 9
Ah, this beautiful attendant of yours, so fresh in her appearance, captivates me; she performs tasks unfit for her form. Grant me whatever you possess, let her please me.
प्रभूतनागाश्वरथं महाजनं समृद्धियुक्तं बहुपानयोजनम्। मनोहरं काञ्चनचित्रभूषणं गृहं महच्छोभयतामियं मम ।। 10
Let her grace my great house, adorned with many elephants, horses, chariots, and people, filled with abundance and drink, resplendent with golden ornaments, and delightful to behold.
ततः सुदेष्णामनुमन्त्र्य कीचकस्ततः समभ्येत्य नराधिपात्मजाम्। उवाच कृष्णामभिसान्त्वयंस्तदा मृगेन्द्रकन्यामिव जम्बुको वने ।। 11
Then, after consulting Sudeshna, Kichaka approached the princess, and with soothing words addressed Krishna, as a jackal might approach the daughter of a lion in the forest.
