Sudeshna, the royal queen, adorned with every ornament, radiant, was surrounded by a hundred princesses.
All those noble women, seeing Draupadi, were deeply moved, and immediately rose from their seats and gathered around her.
All of them gazed upon Krishna, her ankles hidden, of noble form, with coppery wide eyes, flawless in every limb, bowed in posture, and slender-waisted—like the goddess Shachi herself had arrived.
She was neither short nor too tall, born in a grassy forest, faultless like a female rishyarohi deer, with lovely hair and deer-like eyes.
She seemed like a frightened doe, like an elephant cow separated from her herd, with wide eyes like the goddess of fortune, radiant like knowledge itself.
She was like Rohini among the stars, like a blazing flame, like Parvati among goddesses, like the shore of the great ocean.
Like a serpent maiden easy to approach, like a celestial woman among deer, pure-bodied as the Ganges, radiant as an autumn night.
Unfathomable in this world, illustrious as Ila, formidable as Savitri, endowed with the splendor of Brahma and Lakshmi.
Like Sita, pure and faithful; like Arundhati, beloved—Sudeṣṇā questioned her, her eyes wide with wonder.
Who are you, flawless in every limb? From where have you come here? Whose are you, wide-eyed one? What may I do for you?
With hidden ankles, equal thighs, three deep lines, six raised features; gentle, with five rosy parts, speaking in a swan’s melodious voice.
With beautiful hair, sweet voice, dusky complexion, full hips and breasts; eyes with curved lashes, lips like ripe fruit, slender-waisted.
Neck like a conch, veins concealed, face like the full moon—are you a demoness, a celestial maiden, a Gandharvi, or a forest goddess?
Are you an Apsaras, a serpent maiden, a star among beauties? Alambusa, Mishrakeshi, Pundarika, or Malini?
Endowed with every grace, like a Kashmiri mare; are you Indrani, Rudrani, Svadha, or perhaps Rati?
O goddess famed among the gods, tell me who you are who has come here. Your beauty is unmatched, even without adornments.
I think the creator ceased after making you; women do not tire of gazing at you, and what man would not be captivated?
Forest goddesses adorned with clusters of coral flowers gaze only at you, astonished by your beauty.
Women of the palace, animals, birds, and men—all gaze at you, O lovely one, utterly amazed.
No beauty like you exists in the three worlds; none seen or heard of, none known to the eye, O auspicious one.
There is no goddess, Gandharvi, Yakshi, or Kinnari like you. My name is Sairandhri, I live on wild roots and fruits.
Once, while my husbands were watching, for some reason my hair was touched; frightened, I fled to the forest.
There, for twelve years, I wandered eating wild roots and fruits, homeless, O fair-browed one, and now I have come to you.
I know how to braid hair, to string jewels in intricate ways; I know how to weave garlands of jasmine, lotus, and lilies.
I will make garlands from sindhuvara and jati flowers; I will grind leaves, deer musk, agarwood, and yellow sandalwood; and I will weave together beautiful, splendid wreaths.
I will worship Satyabhama, the beloved queen of Krishna, and also Krishna herself, the wife of the Parthas and foremost among women.
Thus, O beautiful-browed one, I was pleased by the fulfillment of my desire; and Krishna herself gave me the name Malini. That lotus-eyed Krishna, equal to my very life, became my dear friend.
O auspicious-faced one, I do not wish to stay long anywhere; this is our vow, and such is the tradition of our lineage.
If anyone should take our possessions, our land, or our dwelling, we must not become angry—such is the teaching of our elders, who are free from wrath.
Thus I wander through forests, fortresses, sacred fords, lakes, and various delightful mountains, as well as rivers flowing to the sea.
