कृष्णच्छविसमा कृष्णा संकर्षणसमानना । बिभ्रती विपुलौ बाहु शक्रध्वजसमुच्छ्रयौ ।। 10
Dark as Krishna in complexion, with a face like Sankarshana, bearing two mighty arms raised high like Indra’s banner.
पात्री च पङ्कजी घण्टी स्त्री विशुद्धा च या भुवि । पाशं धनुर्महाचक्रं विविधान्यायुधानि च ।। 11
You hold a vessel, a lotus, a bell, and are the purest woman on earth; you bear a noose, a bow, a great discus, and various other weapons.
कुण्डलाभ्यां सुपूर्णाभ्यां कर्णाभ्यां च विभूषिता । चन्द्रविस्पर्धिना देवि मुखेन त्वं विराजसे ।। 12
Adorned with two splendid, full earrings, O goddess, your face shines, rivaling the brilliance of the moon.
मुकुटेन विचित्रेण केशबन्धेन शोभिना। भुजङ्गाभोगवासेन श्रोणिसूत्रेण राजता ।। 13
With a wondrous crown, a beautiful hair-knot, a garment of serpent coils, and a silver girdle at your hips, you are resplendent.
विभ्राजसे चाऽऽबद्धेन भोगेनेवेह मन्दरः। ध्वजेन शिखिपिच्छानामुच्छ्रितेन विराजसे ।। 14
You shine, O goddess, with your unbound serpent-garment, just as Mandara does, and you are radiant with the raised banner of peacock feathers.
कौमारं व्रतमास्थाय त्रिदिवं पावितं त्वया। तेन त्वं स्तूयसे देवि त्रिदशैः पूज्यसेऽपि च ।। 15
By undertaking the vow of maidenhood, you have purified the three worlds; therefore, O goddess, you are praised by the gods and worshipped by them as well.
त्रैलोक्यरक्षणार्थाय महिषासुरनाशिनि । प्रसन्ना मे सुरश्रेष्ठे दयां कुरु शिवा भव ।। 16
For the protection of the three worlds, O destroyer of Mahishasura, be gracious to me, O best of the gods, show compassion and be auspicious.
जया त्वं विजया चैव संग्रामे च जयप्रदा। ममापि विजयं देहि वरदा त्वं च सांप्रतम् ।। 17
You are Victory and Triumph, the giver of success in battle; grant me victory also now, O bestower of boons.
विन्ध्ये चैव नगश्रेष्ठे तव स्थानं हि शाश्वतम्। कालि कालि महाकालि शीधुमांसपशुप्रिये ।। 18
Your eternal abode is on Vindhya, the greatest of mountains; O Kali, O Great Kali, lover of blood, flesh, and animal sacrifice.
कृतानुयात्रा भूतैस्त्वं वरदा कामचारिणी। भारावतारे ये च त्वां संस्मरिष्यन्ति मानवाः ।। 19
Followed by spirits, you are the granter of boons, the fulfiller of desires; and those men who remember you during the earth’s burden will be blessed.
प्रणमन्ति च ये त्वां हि प्रभाते तु नरा भुवि । न तेषां दुर्लभं किंचित्पुत्रतो धनतोपि वा ।। 20
Those men who bow to you at dawn upon the earth will lack nothing, whether sons or wealth.
दुर्गात्तारयसे दुर्गे तत्त्वं दुर्गा स्मृता जनैः । कान्तारेष्ववसन्नानां मग्रानां च महार्णवे। दस्युभिर्वा निरुद्धानां त्वं गतिः परमा नृणाम् ।। 21
You rescue from danger, O Durga; thus you are remembered as Durga by people. For those lost in forests, in the great ocean, or beset by robbers, you are the supreme refuge.
जलप्रतरणे चैव कान्तारेष्वटवीषु च। ये स्मरन्ति महादेवि न च सीदन्ति ते नराः ।। 22
In crossing water, in forests, and in wilds, those who remember you, O great goddess, never sink into misfortune.
त्वं कीर्तिः श्रीर्धृतिः सिद्धिर्ह्रीर्विद्या संततिर्मतिः। संध्या रात्रिः प्रभा निद्रा ज्योत्स्ना कांतिःक्षमादया ।। 23
You are fame, fortune, fortitude, success, modesty, knowledge, continuity, intelligence, twilight, night, light, sleep, moonlight, beauty, forbearance, and compassion.
नृणां च बन्धनं मोहं पुत्रनाशं धनक्षयम्। व्याधिं मृत्युं भयं चैव पूजिता नाशयिष्यसि ।। 24
When worshipped, you destroy bondage, delusion, loss of sons, loss of wealth, disease, death, and fear among men.
सोहं राज्यात्परिभ्रष्टः शरणं त्वां प्रपन्नवान् । प्रणतश्च यथा मूर्ध्ना तव देवि सुरेश्वरि ।। 25
Deprived of my kingdom, I have taken refuge in you; I bow before you with my head, O goddess, queen of the gods.
त्राहि मां पद्मपत्राक्षि सत्ये सत्या भवस्व नः। शरणं भव मे दुर्गे शरण्ये भक्तवत्सले ।। 26
Protect me, O lotus-eyed one; in truth, be truly gracious to us. Be my refuge, O Durgā, refuge of all, who cherishes her devotees.
एवं स्तुता हि सा देवी दर्शयामास पाण्डवम् । उपगम्य तु राजानमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ।। 27
Thus praised, that goddess indeed revealed herself to the Pāṇḍava, and approaching the king, she spoke these words.
शृणु राजन्महाबाहो मदीयं वचनं प्रभो। भविष्यत्यचिरादेव संग्रामे विजयस्तव ।। 28
Hear, O king of mighty arms, my words, O lord: very soon you shall have victory in battle.
मम प्रसादान्निर्जित्य हत्वा कौरववाहिनीम् । राज्यं निष्कण्टकं कृत्वा भोक्ष्यसे मेदिनीं पुनः ।। 29
By my favor, having conquered and slain the Kaurava army, you shall make your kingdom free of thorns and enjoy the earth once more.
भ्रातृभिः सहितो राजन्प्रीतिं प्राप्स्यसि पुष्कलाम् । मत्प्रसादाच्च ते सौख्यमारोग्यं च भविष्यति ।। 30
O king, together with your brothers, you shall obtain abundant joy; and by my grace, you will have happiness and health.
ये च संकीर्तयिष्यन्ति लोके विगतकल्मषाः। तेषां तुष्टा प्रदास्यामि राज्यमायुर्वपुः सुतम् ।। 31
Those pure of heart who recite or proclaim this in the world, to them, pleased, I shall grant kingdom, long life, beauty, and sons.
प्रवासे नगरे वाऽपि संग्रामे शत्रुसंकटे । अटव्यां दुर्गकान्तारे सागरे गहने गिरौ ।। 32
Whether in exile, in a city, in battle, in the danger of enemies, in the forest, in a mountain fastness, in the sea, or in a deep mountain,
ये स्मरिष्यन्ति मां राजन्यथाऽहं भवता स्मृता । न तेषां दुर्लभं किंचितस्मिँल्लोके भविष्यति ।। 33
Those kings who remember me as you have remembered me—nothing in this world will be unattainable for them.
इदं स्तोत्रवरं भक्त्या शृणुयाद्वा पठेत वा। तस्य सर्वाणि कार्याणि सिद्धिं यास्यन्ति पाण्डवाः ।। 34
Whoever listens to or recites this excellent hymn with devotion, for him, O Pāṇḍavas, all undertakings will be accomplished.
मत्प्रसादाच्च वः सर्वान्विराटनगरे स्थितान् । न प्रज्ञास्यन्ति कुरको नरा वा तन्निवासिनः ।। 35
And by my grace, none of the Kurus or the people dwelling in that city of Virāṭa will recognize any of you.
इत्युक्त्वा वरदा देवी युधिष्ठिरमरिंदमम्। रक्षां कृत्वा च पाण्डूनां तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ।।] 36
Having spoken thus, the boon-giving goddess, after granting protection to Yudhiṣṭhira, the subduer of foes, and to the Pāṇḍavas, vanished there itself.
ततस्तु ते पुण्यजलां शिवां शुभां महर्षिगन्धर्वनिषेवितोदकाम्। त्रिलोककान्तामवतीर्य जाह्नवीमृषींश्च देवांश्च पितृनतपर्यन् ।। 1
Then they descended to the holy, auspicious, and blessed Jāhnavī, whose waters are frequented by great sages and Gandharvas, beloved in all three worlds, and offered oblations to the sages, gods, and ancestors.
वरप्रदानं ह्यनुचिन्त्य पार्थिवे हुत्वाऽग्निहोत्रं कृतजप्यमङ्गलः । दिशं तथैन्द्रीमभितः प्रपेदिवान्कृताञ्जलिर्धर्ममुपाह्वयच्छनैः ।। 2
Having reflected on the granting of boons, and after performing the fire ritual with offerings, recitations, and auspicious rites, they faced the eastern direction with joined palms and quietly invoked Dharma.
वरप्रदानं मम दत्तवान्पिता प्रसन्नचेता वरदः प्रजापतिः । जलार्थिनो मे तृषितस्य सोदरा मया प्रयुक्ता विविशुर्जलाशयम् ।। 3
My father, the boon-giver, the gracious lord of creatures, granted me a boon with a pleased mind; my thirsty brothers, desiring water, entered the water at my command.
