तच्छ्रुत्वा सहदेवस्तु पर्यबध्नत तच्छवम् ।। 48
Hearing this, Sahadeva bound the corpse as instructed.
युधिष्ठिरः शुचिर्भूत्वा मनसाऽभिप्रणम्य च। ब्रह्माणामिन्द्रं वरदं कुबेरं वरुणानिलौ ।। 49
Yudhishthira, pure in mind, bowed inwardly to Brahma, Indra the granter of boons, Kubera, Varuna, and the wind gods.
रुद्रं यमं च विष्णुं च सोमार्कौ धर्ममेव च । पृथिवीमन्तरिक्षं च दिशश्चोपदिशस्तथा । वसूश्चं मरुतश्चैव ज्वलनं चातितेजसम् ।। 50
He bowed to Rudra, Yama, Vishnu, Soma, the sun, Dharma, the earth, the sky, the directions and their sub-directions, the Vasus, the Maruts, and the blazing fire.
दिवाचरा रात्रिचराणि वाऽपि यानीह भूतान्यनुकीर्तितानि । तेभ्यो नमस्कृत्य च सुव्रतेभ्यः प्रणम्य तेपां शरणं गतोऽहम् ।। 51
He bowed to the beings who move by day and by night, and to those not mentioned here; saluting the virtuous ones, he declared, 'I have taken refuge in you.'
सर्वायुधानीह महाबलानि न्यासं महादेवसमीपतो वै। न्यस्याम्यहं वायुसमीपतश्च वनस्पतीनां च सपर्वतानाम् ।। 52
Here I deposit all mighty weapons, near Mahadeva, near the wind, and among the trees and mountains.
एष न्यासो मया दत्तः सोममूर्यानिलान्तिके। मम पार्थस्य वा देयं पूर्णे वर्षे त्रयोदशे ।। 53
This deposit has been made by me near Soma, the moon, and the wind; it shall be given to me or to Partha when the thirteenth year is complete.
नेदं भीमे प्रदातव्यमयं क्रुद्धो वृकोदरः। आमर्षान्नित्यसंक्रुद्धो धृतराष्ट्रसुतान्प्रति। अपूर्णकाले प्रहरेत्क्रोधसंजातमत्सरः ।। 54
It must not be given to Bhima, for Vrikodara is wrathful; ever angry against Dhritarashtra's sons, he might strike before the time is fulfilled, driven by rage and jealousy.
पुनः प्रवेशो नः स्यात्तु वनवासाय सर्वदा । समये परिपूर्णे तु धार्तराष्ट्रान्निहन्महे ।। 55
If we re-enter the forest, it will be for exile again; but when the time is fulfilled, we shall destroy the Dhartarashtras.
एष चार्थश्च धर्मश्च कामः कीर्तिरलं यशः। मदायत्तमिदं सर्वं जीवितं च न संशयः ।। 56
This purpose, righteousness, desire, fame, and glory—all depend on me; so does life itself, without doubt.
दैवतेभ्यो नमस्कृत्य शमीं कृत्वा प्रदक्षिणम्। नगरं गन्तुमायाताः सर्वे ते भ्रातरः सह ।। 57
Having saluted the deities and circumambulated the shami tree, all the brothers together set out to enter the city.
आगोपालाविपालेभ्यः कर्षकेभ्यः परंतप। आजग्मुर्नगराभ्याशं दर्शयन्तः पुनः पुनः ।। 58
From the cowherds, shepherds, and ploughmen, O scorcher of foes, they came near the city, showing themselves again and again.
अशीतिशतवर्पेयं माताऽस्माकमिहान्तिके । बहुकालपरीणामा मृत्योस्तु वशमेयुपी । न चाग्निसंस्कारमियं प्रापिता कुलधर्मतः ।। 59
This mother of ours, aged eighty years, has long been subject to the power of death; yet, according to family custom, she has not been given the fire-rite.
यः समासाद्यते कश्चित्तस्मिन्देशे यदृच्छया। तमेवमृचुर्धर्मज्ञाः कुलधर्मो न ईदृशः ।। 60
Whoever happens to come upon such a place by chance, the righteous declare, should perform the rites; but such is not the family custom.
विश्रावयन्तस्ते हृष्टा दिशः सर्वा व्यनादयन् । स्वर्गतेयमिहास्माकं जननी शोकविह्वला ।। 61
They, joyful, proclaimed it aloud in all directions, resounding everywhere: 'Our mother has gone to heaven, though we are stricken with grief.'
वने विचरमाणानां लुब्धानां वनचारिणाम्। कुलधर्मोऽयमस्माकं पूर्वैराचरितः पुरा ।। 62
For us who wander in the forest, hunters and forest-dwellers, this is the family custom, practiced by our ancestors of old.
एवं ते सुकृतं कृत्वा समन्तादवघुष्य च। भीमसेनोऽर्जुनश्चैव माद्रीपुत्रावुभावपि ।। 63
Thus, having done what was proper and proclaimed it all around, Bhimasena, Arjuna, and both sons of Madri also—
युधिष्ठिरश्च कृष्णा च राजपत्नी सुमध्यमा। ततो यथासमाज्ञप्तं नगरं प्राविशंस्तदा ।। 64
Yudhishthira and Krishna, the royal wife of graceful form, then entered the city as instructed.
मत्स्यराज्ञो विराटस्य समीपं वस्तुमञ्जसा। अज्ञातचर्यां चरितुं वर्षं राष्ट्रे त्रयोदशम् ।। 65
To dwell near King Virata of the Matsyas, to live incognito for the thirteenth year in his kingdom—
अतश्छन्नानि नामानि चकारैषां युधिष्ठिरः । जयो जयेशो विजयो जयत्सेनो जयद्बलः
Then Yudhishthira assigned them concealed names: Jaya, Jayesha, Vijaya, Jayatsena, Jayadbala.
आपत्सु नामभिस्त्वेतैः समाह्वामः परस्परम् ।। 66 ।। ततो यथाप्रतिज्ञाभिः प्राविशन्नगरं महत्
In times of trouble, we shall call each other by these names. Then, as they had vowed, they entered the great city.
अज्ञातचर्यां वत्स्यन्तो राष्ट्रे वर्षं त्रयोदशम् ।। 67
They would live incognito in the kingdom for the thirteenth year.
विराटनगरं रम्यं गच्छमानो युधिष्ठिरः। अस्तुवन्मनसा देवीं दुर्गां त्रिभुवनेश्वरीम् ।। 1
As Yudhishthira was going to the delightful city of Virata, he praised in his mind the goddess Durga, ruler of the three worlds.
यशोदागर्भसंभूतां नारायणवरप्रियाम् । नन्दगोपकुले जातां मङ्गल्यां कुलवर्धनीम् ।। 2
Born from the womb of Yashoda, beloved of Narayana's blessings, born in the house of Nanda the cowherd, auspicious and increaser of the lineage.
कंसविद्रावणकरीमसुराणां क्षयंकरीम्। शिलातटविनिक्षिप्तामाकाशं प्रति गामिनीम् ।। 3
She who drove away Kamsa, destroyer of demons, who was placed on a rock's edge and went towards the sky.
वासुदेवस्य भगिनीं दिव्यमाल्यविभूषिताम्। दिव्याम्बरधरां देवीं खङ्गखेटकधारिणीम् ।। 4
Sister of Vasudeva, adorned with divine garlands, wearing celestial garments, the goddess bearing sword and shield.
भारावतरणे पुण्ये ये स्मरन्ति सदा शिवाम् । तान्वै तारयते पापात्पङ्के गामिव दुर्बलाम् ।। 5
Those who always remember the auspicious one in the holy act of relieving the earth's burden, she truly delivers them from the mire of sin, as a cow from mud.
स्तोतुं प्रचक्रमे भूयो विविधैः स्तोत्रसंभवैः । आमन्त्र्य दर्शनाकाङ्क्षी राजा देवीं सहानुजः ।। 6
The king, desiring a vision of the goddess and addressing her, began again to praise her with various hymns, together with his younger brothers.
नमोस्तु वरदे कृष्णे कुमारि ब्रह्मचारिणि । बालार्कसदृशाकारे पूर्णचन्द्रनिभानने ।। 7
Salutations to you, O giver of boons, O dark one, O maiden, O chaste one, whose form is like the rising sun, whose face resembles the full moon.
चतुर्भुजे चतुर्वक्रे पीनश्रोणिपयोधरे। मयूरपिच्छवलये केयूराङ्गदधारिणि ।। 8
With four arms, four faces, broad hips and full breasts, adorned with peacock-feathered bangles, and wearing armlets and bracelets.
भासि देवि यथा पद्मा नारायणपरिग्रहः । स्वरूपं ब्रह्मचर्यं च विशदं तव खेचरि ।। 9
O goddess, you shine like Lakshmi, the beloved of Narayana; your true form and pure vow of celibacy are radiant, O sky-roaming one.
