गुरोर्वचनमाज्ञाय संप्रहृष्टो जितेन्द्रियः। बाहुभ्यां परिगृह्याथ राजपुत्रीमनिन्दिताम् । प्रवव्राज महाबाहुरर्जुनः प्रियदर्शनाम् ।। 26
Hearing the teacher’s command, rejoicing and self-controlled, Arjuna, mighty-armed and pleasing in appearance, took the blameless princess in his arms and set out.
जटिलो वल्कलधरः शततूणीधनुर्धरः। स्कन्धे कृत्वा वरारोहां बालामायतलोचनाम्
Wearing matted hair and bark garments, bearing a bow with a hundred arrows, he placed the beautiful, wide-eyed maiden on his shoulder.
आनीय नगराभ्याशमवातारयदर्जुनः ।। 27
Arjuna brought her near the city and set her down.
स राजधानीं संप्राप्य पार्थिवोऽर्जुनमब्रवीत्। इमानि पुरुषव्याघ्र आयुधानि परंतप। कस्मिन्न्यासयितव्यानि गुप्तिश्चैषां कथं भवेत् ।। 1
Having reached the royal capital, the king spoke to Arjuna: 'O tiger among men, O scorcher of foes, these weapons—where should they be deposited, and how should they be guarded?'
सायुधा हि वयं तात प्रवेक्ष्यामः पुरं यदि। समुद्वेगं जनस्यास्य करिष्यामो न संशयः ।। 2
'If we enter the city armed, dear one, we will surely cause alarm among its people—there is no doubt.'
गाण्डीवं हि नरव्याघ्र त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतम्। कथं नाविष्कृताः स्यामो धार्तराष्ट्रस्य मारिष ।। 3
'For Gandiva, O tiger among men, is renowned in all three worlds; how can we remain undiscovered by Dhritarashtra’s son, O hero?'
यदीद.. धनुरादाय चरेम सजने पुरे। क्षिप्र नः प्रतिजानीयुर्मनुष्या नात्र संशयः ।। 4
If we were to take up our bows and move about openly in the city, people would quickly recognize us—of this there is no doubt.
एकस्मिन्नपि विज्ञाते समयं नो व्यतीत्य च । भूयो द्वादशवर्षाणि प्रविशेम वनं वयम् ।। 5
Even if just one of us were discovered, we would have to return to the forest for another twelve years, breaking our agreement.
तस्मात्सर्वाणि शस्त्राणि प्रच्छाद्यान्यत्र यत्र वा । प्रविशेम पुरश्रेष्ठं तथा सम्यक्कृतं भवेत् ।। 6
Therefore, let us conceal all our weapons somewhere, so that when we enter the chief city, everything will be properly arranged.
अजातशत्रोर्वचनं श्रुत्वा चैव महायशाः। उवाच धर्मपुत्रं तमर्जुनः परवीरहा ।। 7
Hearing the words of Ajātaśatru, the illustrious Arjuna, destroyer of enemy heroes, spoke to the righteous king.
इयं वने मनुष्येन्द्र महती दृश्यते शमी। भीमशाखा दुरारोहा श्मशानस्य समीपतः ।। 8
O king among men, here in the forest stands a great śamī tree, with massive branches, difficult to climb, near the cremation ground.
उत्पथे चापि जातेयं मनुष्यैर्न निषेव्यते । विपुलाऽऽकीर्णशाखा च वायसैरुपसेविता ।। 9
It grows by the roadside, unused by people, its broad branches scattered and frequented by crows.
स्नेहानुबद्धां पश्यामि दुरारोहामिमां शमीम् ।। 10
I see this śamī tree, bound by creepers and hard to climb.
समीपे च श्मशानस्य गृहं नास्य विशेषतः। समासज्यायुधान्यस्यां गच्छामो नगरं नृप ।। 11
There are no houses near the cremation ground, especially not here; let us hide our weapons in this tree and then go to the city, O king.
न चास्यां चारयिष्यन्ति मनुष्याः पार्थ केचन ।। 12
And no one, O son of Pṛthā, will search here among these trees.
धनुर्भिः पुरुषं कृत्वा चर्मकेशास्थिसंवृतम्। उद्बन्धमिव कृत्वा च धनुर्ज्यापाशसंवृतम् । अस्यामायुधमासज्य गच्छाम नगरं वयम् ।। 13
Let us make a figure of a man out of bows, covered with hide, hair, and bone, and bind it as if with a bowstring; after placing our weapons in this tree, we shall go to the city.
एवं परिहरिष्यन्ति मनुष्या वनचारिणः । अत्रैवं नावबुध्यन्ते मनुष्याः केचिदायुधम् ।। 14
In this way, the forest dwellers will avoid it, and no one here will realize that weapons are hidden.
एवमुक्त्वा स राजानं धर्मात्मानं धनञ्जयः। प्रचक्रमे निधानाय शश्त्राणां भरतर्षभ ।। 15
Having spoken thus to the righteous king, Dhanañjaya began to prepare the hiding place for the weapons, O bull among the Bharatas.
तानि सर्वाणि संनह्य पञ्च पञ्चाचलोपमाः । आयुधानि कलापांश्च निस्त्रिंशानतुलप्रभान् ।। 16
Then the five, mighty as mountains, fastened all their weapons, quivers, and swords of unmatched brilliance.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा सहदेवमुवाच ह। आरुह्येमां शमीं वीर निधत्स्वेहायुधानि नः ।। 17
Then King Yudhiṣṭhira said to Sahadeva, 'Climb this śamī tree, O hero, and hide our weapons there.'
इति संदिश्य तं पार्थः पुनरेव धनञ्जयम् । अब्रवीदायुधानीह निधातुं भरतर्षभः ।। 18
Having instructed him thus, Pārtha again spoke to Dhanañjaya, urging him to hide the weapons here, O bull among the Bharatas.
येन देवान्मनुष्यांश्च पिशाचोरगराक्षसान् । निवातकवचांश्चापि पौलोमांश्च परंतपः । कालकेयांश्च दुर्धाषान्सर्वांश्चैकरथोऽजयत् ।। 19
With these weapons, the conqueror of foes defeated gods, humans, spirits, serpents, demons, the invincible Nivātakavacas, the Paulomas, the fierce Kālakeyas, and all others, riding alone in his chariot.
स्फीताञ्जनपदांश्चान्यानजयत्कुरुनन्दनः। तदुदग्रं महाघोरं सपत्नगणमूदनम्। अपज्यमकरोत्पार्थो गाण्डीवं च भयंकरम् ।। 20
The son of Kuru conquered other prosperous kingdoms, destroyed the formidable and dreadful hosts of rivals, and made the mighty, fearsome Gāṇḍīva unstrung.
येन वीरः कुरुक्षेत्रमभ्यरक्षत्परंतपः । जृम्भिते च धनुःश्रेष्ठे न्यासार्थं नृपसत्तमः ।। 21
With this bow, the hero defended Kurukṣetra; when the great bow was unstrung, the noble king prepared it for safekeeping.
धर्मपुत्रो महातेजाः सर्वलोकवशंकरम्। भुजङ्गभोगसदृशं मणिकाञ्चनभूषितम् ।। 22
The son of Dharma, radiant with great energy, brought forth a bow adorned with jewels and gold, resembling the coil of a serpent, which subdues all the worlds.
वित्रासनं दानवानां राक्षसानां च नित्यशः । धनूरत्नं महातेजा जृम्भयामास पाण्डवः ।। 23
That best of bows, ever a terror to Dānavas and Rākṣasas, was stretched by the mighty Pāṇḍava.
पाञ्चालान्येन संग्रामे भीमसेनोऽजयत्पुरा । प्रत्यषेधद्बहूनेकः सपत्नांश्चापि दिग्जये ।। 24
With that bow, Bhīmasena once conquered the Pāñcālas in battle, and single-handedly repelled many rivals during his conquest of the directions.
निशम्य यस्य विष्कारं विद्रवन्ति रणे परे । पर्वतस्येव दीर्णस्य विस्फोटमशनेरिव ।। 25
At the sound of its string, enemies would flee on the battlefield, as at the thunderous crash of a mountain split by a bolt of lightning.
सैन्धवं येन राजानं जित्वा क्रुद्धः परामृशत् । येन क्रोधवशाञ्जघ्ने पर्वते गन्धमादने ।। 26
With that bow, he defeated the king of Sindhu in anger, and, overcome by wrath, struck down foes on Mount Gandhamādana.
दिव्यं सौगन्धिकं पुष्पं येनाजैषीत्स पाण्डवः। 0
With it, that Pāṇḍava won the divine Saugandhika flower.
