पुरोहितोऽयमस्माकमग्निहोत्राणि रक्षतु। सूतपौरोगवैः सार्धं द्रुपदस्य निवेशने
Let this priest of ours protect the sacred fires, together with the charioteers and cowherds, in the house of Drupada.
इन्द्रसेनमुखाश्चेमे रथानादाय केवलान् । यान्तु द्वारवतीं शीघ्रमिति मे वर्तते मतिः
Let these, headed by Indrasena, take the chariots and quickly go to Dvaraka—such is my decision.
इमाश्च नार्यो द्रौपद्याः सर्वाश्च परिचारिका । पाञ्चालानेव गच्छन्तु सूतपौरोगवैः सह
And let all these women, attendants of Draupadi, go to the Panchalas together with the charioteers and cowherds.
सर्वैरपि च वक्तव्यं न प्राज्ञायन्त पाण्डवाः । अर्धरात्रे महात्मानो भिक्षादान्ब्राह्मणानपि। गता ह्यस्मानपाहाय सर्वे द्वैतवनादिति
Let it be said by all that the Pandavas are not recognized; in the middle of the night, the great souls, even the Brahmanas who received alms, have left us behind and all gone to the Dvaita forest.
एवं तेऽन्योन्यमामन्त्र्य कर्माण्युक्त्वा पृथक्पृथक्। धौम्यमामन्त्रयामासुः स च तान्मन्त्रमब्रवीत्
Thus, after bidding each other farewell and assigning their tasks separately, they took leave of Dhaumya, and he spoke to them the sacred counsel.
तानन्वशात्स धर्मात्मा सर्वधर्मविशेषवित् । धौम्यः पुरोहितो राजन्पाण्डवान्पुरुषर्षभान्
That righteous Dhaumya, knower of all duties, the priest, O king, instructed the Pandavas, the best of men.
विदितं वै यथा सर्वं लोके वृत्तमिदं नृप। विदिते चापि वक्तव्यं सुहृद्भिरनुरागतः
It is well known, O king, how all this has happened in the world; and when it is known, it should be spoken of by loving friends.
अतोऽहमभिवक्ष्यामि हेतुमात्रं निबोधत। हन्तेमां राजवसतिं राजपुत्रा ब्रवीमि वः। यथा राजकुलं प्राप्य चरन्प्रोष्य न रिष्यति
Therefore I will now speak; listen to the reason. I will tell you, princes, how to dwell in the royal household so that, having lived there, you will not be harmed.
दुर्वासमेव कौरव्य जातेन कुरुवेश्मनि । अमानितेन मानार्ह गूढेन परिवत्सरम्
Just like Durvasa, O Kauravya, one born in the house of the Kurus, deserving of honor but remaining unrecognized, should live concealed for a year.
दिष्टद्वारो लभेद्द्रष्टुं राजस्वेषु न विश्वसेत्। न चानुशिष्याद्राजानमपृच्छन्तं कदाचन
One should enter only through the appointed door to see the king, and never trust the kings; nor should one ever instruct a king who has not asked.
तूष्णीं त्वेनमुपासीत काले समभिपूजयेत्
He should serve him in silence, and at the proper time, show him due respect.
असूयन्ति हि राजानो जनाननृतवादिनः। तथैव चावमन्यन्ते मन्त्रिणं वादिनं मृषा
For kings become hostile toward those who speak falsely, and likewise, they disregard a counselor who speaks untruth.
विदिते चास्य कुर्वीत कार्याणि सुलघून्यपि। एवं विचरतो राज्ञि न क्षतिर्जायते क्वचित्
When he knows the king's wishes, he should perform even the smallest tasks; thus, moving about in the king's presence, he will never suffer harm.
पाण्डवाग्निरयं लोके सर्वशस्त्रमयो महान । भर्ता गोप्ता च भूतानां राजा पुरुषविग्रहः
This Pandava is like fire in the world, composed of all weapons, great; he is the lord and protector of beings, a king in human form.
सर्वात्मना वर्तमानं यथा दोषो न संस्पृशेत् । राजानमुपतिष्ठन्तं तस्य वृत्तं निबोधत
Acting with complete self-control so that no fault touches him, he attends upon the king; listen to his conduct.
क्षत्रियं चैव सर्पं च ब्राह्मणं च बहुश्रुतम् । नावमन्येत मेधावी कृशानपि कदाचन
A wise man should never despise a Kshatriya, a serpent, or a Brahmin learned in the Vedas, even if they are weak.
एतत्रयं च पुरुषं निर्दहेदवमानितम्। राजा तस्माद्बुधैर्नित्यं पूजनीयः प्रयत्नतः
These three, if disrespected, can destroy a person; therefore, the king should always be honored diligently by the wise.
नातिवर्तेत मर्यादां पुरुषो राजसंमतः। व्यवहारं पुनर्लोके मर्यादां पण्डिता विदुः
A man approved by the king should not transgress the established boundaries; in society, the learned know these boundaries as proper conduct.
न हि पुत्रं न नप्तारं न भ्रातरमरिन्दम। समतिक्रान्तमर्यादं पूजयन्ति पराधिपाः
For, O subduer of foes, overlords do not honor a son, a grandson, or a brother who has overstepped the limits.
गच्छन्नपि परां भूतिं भूमिपालनियोजितः। जात्यन्ध इव मन्येत मर्यादामनुचिन्तयन्
Even when attaining great prosperity under the king's command, one should think of the boundaries like a man blind by birth.
धृष्टो द्वारं सदा पश्यन्न च राजसु विश्वसेत् । तदेवासनमन्विच्छेद्यत्र नाभिलषेत्परः
One should always watch the door boldly, but never trust the kings; he should seek a seat where no other desires it.
यत्रोपविष्टः संकल्पं नोपहन्याद्बलीयसः । तदासनं राजकुले ईप्सेत पुरुषो वसन्
Where, upon sitting, he does not thwart the intention of someone more powerful, that seat in the royal court should a man living there desire.
यथैनं यत्र चासीनं शङ्कयेद्दुष्टचरिणम् । न तत्रोपविशेज्जातु यो राजवसतिं वसेत्
Wherever and in whatever place he suspects someone of evil conduct, he who dwells in the king's residence should never sit there.
स्वभूमौ काममासीत तिष्ठेद्वा राजसन्निधौ। न त्वेवासनमन्यस्य प्रार्थयेत कदाचन
He may sit as he wishes on his own ground, or stand in the king's presence; but he should never desire another's seat.
परासनगतं ह्येनं परस्य परिचारकाः । परिषद्यपकर्षेयुः परिहास्येत शत्रुभिः
If he sits on another's seat, the attendants of that person may remove him from the assembly, and he will be ridiculed by his enemies.
नित्यं विप्रतिषिद्धं तत्पुरस्तादासनं मतम् । अर्थार्थं हि यदा भृत्यो राजानमुपतिष्ठते
That seat in front is always considered forbidden; for when a servant approaches the king for some purpose, that is the rule.
दक्षिणं वाऽथ वामं वा भागमाश्रित्य पण्डितः। तिष्ठेद्विनीतवद्राजन्न पुरस्तान्न पृष्ठतः। राक्षिणामात्तशस्त्राणां पश्चात्स्थानं विधीयते
A learned man should stand to the right or left side, behaving with humility, O King, not in front nor behind; standing behind is prescribed only for guards bearing weapons.
मातृगोत्रे स्वगोत्रे वा नाम्ना शीलेन वा पुनः । संग्रहार्थं मनुष्याणां नित्यमाभाषिता भवेत्
One should always be addressed among people by their mother's lineage, their own lineage, their name, or their character, for the sake of recognition.
पूज्यमानोपि यो राज्ञा नरो न प्रतिपूजयेत्। नैनमाराधयेज्जातु शास्ता शिष्यानिवालसान्
If a man, though honored by the king, does not return that honor, he should never be favored, just as a teacher does not favor lazy students.
नास्य युग्यं न पर्यङ्कं नासनं न रथं तथा। आरोहेत्संमतोऽस्मीति यो राजवसतिं वसेत्
He who dwells in the king's residence should not mount the king's yoke, couch, seat, or chariot, thinking himself accepted.
