Accept a third, incomparable and great boon, my son; for you are born of me, O king, and Vidura is also born from my portion.
O eternal Lord of gods, I have seen you directly. Whatever boon you grant in your satisfaction, that I shall accept, O father.
May I always conquer greed, delusion, and anger, O mighty one; and may my mind ever remain steadfast in charity, austerity, and truth.
Endowed with these virtues by nature, O Pandava, you are indeed Dharma incarnate; and as you have asked, so it shall be for you.
Having spoken thus, Dharma, the blessed upholder of the worlds, vanished; and the Pandavas, united, slept peacefully, their minds at rest.
Then the heroes, their fatigue gone, returned to the hermitage and gave the fire-stick to that ascetic Brahmin.
Whoever reads this account of the great father and son, which brings fame, being self-controlled and master of his senses, shall enjoy happiness with sons and grandsons and attain a lifespan of a hundred years.
And for those who know this sacred narrative, their minds will never delight in unrighteousness, in dividing friends, in taking others' wealth, in coveting others' wives, or in miserliness.
Having bowed to Narayana, to Nara the supreme among men, to the goddess Sarasvati, and to Vyasa, then let one utter victory.
How did Draupadi, the devoted wife, greatly fortunate and always blessed with happiness, O Brahman, live in sorrow and unknown?
And how did those foremost Brahmanas, together with the charioteers and priests, dwell in concealment, serving as attendants?
I will tell you how your forefathers once lived incognito in the city of Virata; listen to that.
Thus, having obtained those boons, King Yudhishthira, lord of dharma, went to the hermitage and related his story to the Brahmanas.
After recounting everything to the Brahmanas, Yudhishthira presented the bundle containing the fire sticks and belongings to a Brahmana.
Then King Yudhishthira, son of Kunti and firm in his vows, summoned all his brothers and spoke thus, O Bharata.
For twelve years we have been exiled from the kingdom, deprived of our rule by deceit, and made destitute many times.
We have dwelt in the forest for twelve years; now we must live incognito, concealed for the thirteenth year.
Sanctioned by dharma, the Pandavas, truthful and valiant, will live incognito, concealed for the thirteenth year.
The learned, those who have completed their vows, and the Brahmanas who were companions in the forest, and those devoted ascetics who dwelt there, sat together.
Standing joyfully with joined palms, those great souls spoke.
Everything is known to you—how we were deprived of our kingdom by the sons of Dhritarashtra through deceit, and made destitute many times.
We have lived in the forest for twelve years, together with you, O best of twice-born, subsisting on wild food.
The remaining period of incognito exile is one year; we shall live concealed, and you ought to grant your permission.
Suyodhana, wicked in mind, Karna, and the son of Subala, knowing this, may act unfairly against us, being our relentless enemies.
They are vigilant, skilled in spies, and attentive to their own and their people's affairs; who among them, being evil-minded, is worthy of trust?
May it happen again for us, that together with the Brahmanas, we may dwell established in our own kingdom throughout all the realms.
Having spoken thus, Yudhishthira, son of Dharma, pure and afflicted by sorrow and grief, then became unconscious, his throat choked with tears.
Then all the Brahmanas, together with his brothers, began to comfort him.
Regaining consciousness, tormented by grief and confusion, King Yudhishthira, his throat filled with tears, looked at Dhaumya, the foremost upholder of Dharma.
Then Dhaumya spoke these words of great import to the king, consoling him and his brothers together with the Brahmanas.
