स तु राजा द्विजं दृष्ट्वा तत्रैवान्तर्हितं तदा। बभूव विस्मयाविष्टः पृथां च समपूजयत्
Then the king, seeing the brāhmaṇa vanish there, was filled with wonder and honored Pṛthā.
गते तस्मिन्द्विजश्रेष्ठे कस्मिंश्चित्कालपर्यये। चिन्तयामास सा कन्या मन्त्रग्रामबलाबलम्
After that best of brāhmaṇas had gone, at some later time, that maiden began to ponder the power and weakness of the collection of mantras.
अयं वै कीदृशस्तेन मम दत्तो हमात्मना। मन्त्रग्रामो बलं तस्य ज्ञास्ये नातिचिरादिति
'What kind of thing is this mantra collection given to me by him? I will soon know its power,' she thought.
एवं संचिन्तयन्ती सा ददर्शर्तुं यदृच्छया। व्रीडिता साऽभवद्बाला कन्याभावे रजस्वला
Thinking thus, she, by chance, saw the rising sun; being a maiden, she became bashful as she had come of age.
ततो हर्म्यतलस्था सा महार्हशयनोचिता। प्राच्यां दिशि समुद्यन्तं ददर्शादित्यमण्डलम्
Then, standing on the palace terrace, accustomed to luxurious beds, she saw the sun's disk rising in the eastern direction.
तत्र बद्धमनोदृष्टिरभवत्सा सुमध्यमा। न चातप्यत रूपेण भानोः सन्ध्यागतस्य सा
There, her mind fixed in concentration, that slender-waisted maiden was not scorched by the form of the sun, who had come at dawn.
तस्या दृष्टिरभूद्दिव्या साऽपश्यद्दिव्यदर्शनम्। आमुक्तकवचं देवं कुण्डलाभ्यां विभूषितम्
Her vision became divine, and she beheld a celestial being, adorned with armor and shining earrings.
तस्याः कौतूहरलं त्वासीन्मन्त्रं प्रति नराधिप। आह्वानमकरोत्साऽथ तस्य देवस्य भामिनी
Her curiosity about the mantra was intense, O king, and the radiant woman summoned that deity.
प्राणानुपस्पृश्य तदा ह्याजुहाव दिवाकरम्। आजगाम ततो राजंस्त्वरमाणो दिवाकरः
Touching her vital energies, she invoked the Sun; then, O king, the Sun swiftly appeared.
मधुपिङ्गो महाबाहुः कम्बुग्रीवो हसन्निव। अङ्गदी बद्धमुकुटो दिशः प्रज्वालयन्निव
Golden-hued, mighty-armed, with a neck like a conch, smiling, wearing bracelets and a crown, he seemed to illuminate all directions.
योगात्कृत्वा द्विधाऽऽत्मानमाजगाम तताप च। आबभाषे ततः कुन्तीं साम्ना परमबल्गुना
By his yogic power, he divided himself in two and arrived, radiating heat; then he addressed Kunti with gentle and supremely soft words.
आगतोस्मि वशं भद्रे तव मन्त्रबलात्कृतः। किं करोमि वशो राज्ञि ब्रूहि कर्ता तदस्मि ते
I have come under your control, O gentle one, compelled by the power of your mantra; what shall I do, O queen? Speak, for I am ready to act for you.
गम्यतां भगवंस्तत्र यत एवागतो ह्यसि। कौतूहलात्समाहूतः प्रसीद भगवन्निति
Depart, O Lord, to where you came from; you were summoned out of curiosity. Be gracious, O Lord.
गमिष्येऽहं यथा मा त्वं ब्रवीषि तनुमध्यमे। न तु देवं समाहूय न्याय्यं प्रेषयितुं वृथा
I shall depart as you wish, slender-waisted one; but it is not proper to summon a god and send him away in vain.
तवाभिसन्धि सुभगे रसूर्यात्पुत्रो भवेदिति। वीर्येणाप्रतिमो लोके कवची कुण्डलीति च
Your intention, O fortunate one, is that a son should be born from the Sun, unmatched in strength in the world, wearing armor and earrings.
सा त्वमात्मप्रदानं वै कुरुष्व गजगामिनि। उत्पत्स्यति हि पुत्रस्ते यथासंकल्पमङ्गने। अथ गच्छाम्यहं भद्रे त्वया संगम्य सुस्मिते
Therefore, O elephant-gaited lady, give yourself; your son will be born as you have desired, O woman. Then, O gentle one, I shall depart after uniting with you, O smiling one.
यदि त्वंवचनं नाद्य करिष्यसि मम प्रियम्। शप्स्ये कन्येऽन्यथा क्रुद्धो ब्राह्मणं पितरं च ते
If you do not fulfill my wish today, O beloved, I shall curse you, maiden, and in anger, your father and the Brahmin as well.
त्वत्कृते तान्प्रधक्ष्यामि सर्वानपि न संशयः। पितरं चैव ते मूढं यो न वेत्ति तवानयम्
For your sake, I will burn them all, without doubt, including your foolish father who does not know your distress.
तस् च ब्राह्मणस्याद्य योसौ मन्त्रमदात्तव। शीलवृत्तमविज्ञाय धास्यामि विनयं परम्
And today, I shall punish that Brahmin who gave you the mantra, not knowing your character and conduct, with utmost discipline.
एते हि विबुधाः सर्वेपुरंदरमुखा दिवि। त्वया प्रलब्धं पश्यन्ति स्मयन्त इव मां शुभे
All these gods, led by Indra, in heaven, see me mocked by you, O lovely one, as if smiling.
पश्य चैनान्सुरगणान्दिव्यं चक्षुरिदं हि ते। पूर्वमेव मया दत्तं दृष्टवत्यसि येन माम्
Behold these hosts of gods; you possess divine sight, which I granted you earlier, by which you saw me.
ततोऽपश्यत्रिदशान्राजपुत्री सर्वानव स्वेषु धिष्ण्येषु खस्थान्। प्रभावन्तं भानुमन्तं महान्तं यथाऽऽदित्यं रोचमानांस्तथैव
Then the princess saw all the gods, each in their own seats in the sky, radiant, powerful, and brilliant like the sun.
सा तान्दृष्ट्वा त्रिदशानेव बाला सूर्यं देवी वचनं प्राह भीता। गच्छ त्वं वै गोपते स्वं विमानं कन्याभावाद्दुःख एवापचारः
Seeing those gods, the maiden, like a child, spoke to the Sun in fear: Go, O lord of cows, to your own chariot; for a maiden, such an act is sorrowful and improper.
पिता माता गुरवश्चैवयेऽन्ये देहस्यास्य प्रभवन्ति प्रदाने। नाहं धर्मं लोपयिष्यामि लोके स्त्रीणां वृत्तं पूज्यते देहरक्षा
Father, mother, teachers, and others are the originators of this body in giving; I will not violate dharma in the world; for women, the conduct of protecting the body is honored.
मया मन्त्रबलं ज्ञातुमाहूतस्त्वं विभावसो। बाल्याद्बालेति तत्कृत्वा क्षन्तुमर्हसि मे विभो
O blazing one, I invoked you by the power of mantra to know your might; I did this out of childishness, so, O lord, please forgive me for my immaturity.
बालेति कृत्वाऽनुनयं तवाहं ददानि नान्यानुनयं लभेत। आत्मप्रदानं कुरु कुन्तिकन्ये शान्तिस्तवैवं हि भवेच्च भीरु
Because you have pleaded with me as a child, I grant you this favor—no other plea would have succeeded; O Kunti, offer yourself, and in this way, O timid one, you will find peace.
न चापि गन्तुं युक्तं हि मया मिथ्याकृतेन वै। असमेत्य त्वया भीरु मन्त्राहूतेन भामिनि
Nor is it proper for me to leave, having been summoned by your mantra, without fulfilling the purpose, O timid and beautiful one.
गमिष्याम्यनवद्याङ्गि लोके समवहास्यताम्। `गच्छेयमेव सुश्रोणि गतोऽहं वै निराकृतः'। सर्वेषां विबुधानां च वक्तव्यः स्यां तथा शुभे
O faultless one, if I depart now, the world will mock me, saying, 'He came and was dismissed, O lovely-hipped one,' and I would become a subject of ridicule among all the gods, O auspicious lady.
सा त्वं मया समागच्छ पुत्रं लप्स्यसि माध्शम्। विशिष्टा सर्वलोकेषु भविष्यसि न संशय
Therefore, unite with me; you will obtain a son like me, and you will become distinguished among all people—of this there is no doubt.
सा तु कन्या बहुविधं ब्रुवन्ती मधुरं वचः। अनुनेतुं सहस्रांशुं न शशाक मनस्विनी
That maiden, though speaking many sweet words, was unable to persuade the thousand-rayed one, steadfast as she was.
