May a hundred sons, illustrious and continuing the family line, be born to your father, O blessed one. By my favor, O princess, turn back; you have come far enough on this path.
This is not far for me, for my heart swiftly runs to my husband’s presence. Yet, as I go, hear once more the words I am about to speak.
You are the mighty son of Vivasvat; thus, the wise call you Vaivasvata. Your subjects act with justice and righteousness; therefore, you are called the king of justice here, O lord.
One does not have such trust even in oneself as in the virtuous; therefore, everyone especially wishes to place their affection in the good.
From goodwill toward all beings arises what is called trust; therefore, people especially place their trust in the virtuous.
The words you have spoken, O lady, are rare; I have not heard their like from anyone but you. By this I am pleased; yet, without his life, choose a fourth boon and then depart.
May a son, born of Satyavat and myself, be born here, continuing both our lines; may he be the father of a hundred sons, strong and mighty. This is the fourth boon I ask of you.
A hundred sons, endowed with strength and valor, will be born to you, O gentle lady, bringing you joy. You shall not suffer hardship, O princess; turn back, for you have come far enough on this path.
The conduct of the virtuous is always in accordance with the eternal law; the good do not falter nor are they distressed. For the virtuous, association with the virtuous is never fruitless, and the good do not pursue fear from the good.
Indeed, the good lead the sun by truth; the good uphold the earth through austerity. The good are the refuge of what has been and what will be, O King; among the virtuous, the good never sink.
Recognizing that this conduct, cherished by the noble, is eternal, the good act for the sake of others, not considering any recompense.
Favour shown to the virtuous is never in vain, nor is wealth or honour lost; since this is always assured among the good, therefore the good become protectors.
Just as you speak words filled with righteousness, pleasing to the mind, well-phrased and of great meaning, so does my highest devotion for you increase. Choose a boon, O peerless and faithful wife.
For you, liberation is not granted apart from your own merit, as it is for others among those who choose boons, O giver of honour. I choose this boon: let Satyavan live; for without my husband, I am as one dead.
I do not desire happiness without my husband; I do not desire heaven without my husband; I do not desire prosperity without my husband; I cannot resolve to live deprived of my husband.
The boon of a hundred sons, granted by you, is given, yet my husband is being taken from me. I choose this boon: let Satyavan live; then your word will indeed be true.
Having said 'So be it,' Yama, the son of Vivasvat, released that noose. The Lord of Dharma, his heart gladdened, spoke these words to Savitri.
This husband of yours, O bringer of joy to your lineage, has been released by me. I am pleased with you, O virtuous one, by your words filled with righteousness and meaning.
May you be free from illness, and may this Satyavan, having attained his purpose, live. He will attain a lifespan of four hundred years together with you.
Having performed sacrifices in accordance with righteousness, he will gain fame in the world; and Satyavan will beget a hundred sons upon you.
All those kings, Kshatriyas with sons and grandsons, will be renowned, bearing your name, and will remain celebrated here forever.
Your father will have a hundred sons by your mother; in Malava, the Malavas by name, with sons and grandsons, will be your brothers, Kshatriyas equal to the gods.
Thus, having granted her the boon, the glorious Lord of Dharma, after sending Savitri back, returned to his own abode.
After Yama departed, Savitri, having regained her husband, went to the place where her husband's lifeless body lay.
Seeing her husband on the ground, she approached and embraced him, placed his head on her lap, and sat down on the earth.
Regaining consciousness, Satyavan spoke to Savitri, gazing at her again and again with love, as one returned from a journey.
How long I have slept! Why was I not awakened? Where is that dark-hued man who dragged me away?
You have slept for a long time in my lap, O best of men. That divine lord, Yama, the restrainer of beings, has departed.
You have rested, O greatly fortunate one, and are now free from sleep, prince. If you are able, rise and look upon this deep night.
Then, regaining consciousness, Satyavan rose as if from a pleasant sleep, looked in all directions and at the forest's edge, and spoke.
