ततस्ते राममर्च्छन्तो लक्ष्मणं च क्षपाचराः। अभिपेतुस्तदा रामं प्रगृहीतशरासनाः
Then, as they worshipped Rama and Lakshmana, the night-dwelling demons rushed toward Rama, bows and arrows in hand.
तां दृष्ट्वाराक्षसेन्द्रस् मायामिक्ष्वाकुनन्दनः। उवाच रामः सौमित्रिमसंभ्रान्तो बृहद्वचः
Seeing that illusion of the king of the rakshasas, the descendant of Ikshvaku, Rama, spoke to Saumitri, unperturbed, with great words.
जहीमान्राक्षसान्पापानात्मनः प्रतिरूपकान्। इत्युक्त्वाऽभ्यहनद्रामो लक्ष्मणश्चात्मरूपकान्
Destroy these wicked rakshasas, who are mere imitations of ourselves—so saying, Rama struck down the impostors, and Lakshmana too struck down those resembling himself.
ततो हर्यश्वयुक्तेन रथेनादित्यवर्चसा। उपतस्थे रणे रामं मातलिः शक्रसारथिः
Then Matali, charioteer of Shakra, approached Rama in battle with a chariot drawn by horses of greenish hue, radiant as the sun.
अयं हर्यश्वयुग्जैत्रो मघोनः स्यन्दनोत्तमः। `त्वदर्थमिह संप्राप्तः संदेशाद्वै शतक्रतोः
This victorious chariot, yoked with greenish horses, belonging to Maghavan, the best of chariots, has come here for you by the command of Shatakratu.
अनेन शक्रः काकुत्स्थ समरे दैत्यदानवान्। शतशः पुरुषव्याघ्र रथोदारेण जघ्निवान्
With this chariot, O descendant of Kakutstha, Shakra has slain hundreds of daityas and danavas in battle, O tiger among men.
तदनन नरव्याघ्र मया यत्तेन संयुगे। स्यन्दनेन जहिक्षिप्रं रावणं मा चिरं कृथाः
Therefore, O tiger among men, with my careful guidance in battle, swiftly slay Ravana with this chariot—do not delay.
इत्युक्तो राघवस्तथ्यं वचोऽशङ्कत मातलेः। मायैषाराक्षसस्येति तमुवाच विबीषणः
Thus addressed, Raghava trusted Matali's truthful words; 'This is the rakshasa's illusion,' said Vibhishana to him.
नेयं माया नरव्याघ्ररावणस् दुरात्मनः। तदातिष्ठ रथंशीघ्रमिमसैन्द्रं महाद्युते
This is not the illusion of Ravana, the evil-minded; so ascend the chariot quickly, this divine chariot of Indra, O one of great splendor.
ततः प्रहृष्टः काकुत्स्थस्तथेत्युक्त्वा विभीषणम्। रथेनाभिपपाताथ दशग्रीवं रुषाऽन्वितः
Then, delighted, Kakutstha replied 'So be it' to Vibhishana, and, mounting the chariot, rushed toward the ten-headed Ravana, filled with wrath.
हाहाकुतानि भूतानि रावणे समभिद्रुते। सिंहनादाः सपटहादिति दिव्यास्तथाऽनदन्
As Ravana was attacked, the spirits cried out 'Ha! Ha!' and divine beings roared like lions, with drums resounding.
[दशकन्धरराजसून्वोस्तथा युद्धमभून्महत्। अलब्धोपममन्यत्रतयोरेव तथाऽभवत् ।।]
[A great battle took place between the king of the ten necks and the sons of the king; it was unmatched except between those two.]
सरामाय महाघोरं विससर्ज निशाचरः। शूलमिन्द्राशनिप्रख्यं ब्रह्मदण्डभिवोद्यतम्
The night-dweller unleashed upon Rama a mighty, terrifying spear, resembling Indra's thunderbolt and raised like Brahma's staff.
तच्छूलं सत्वरं रामश्चच्छेद निशितैः शरैः। तद्दृष्ट्वा दुष्करं कर्म रावणं भयमाविशत्
Rama swiftly cut down that spear with sharp arrows; seeing this difficult feat, fear entered Ravana.
ततः क्रुद्धः ससर्जाशु दशग्रीवः शिताञ्छरान्। सहस्रायुतशो रामे शस्त्राणि विविधानि च
Then, enraged, the ten-headed Ravana quickly released sharp arrows by the thousands and tens of thousands at Rama, along with various weapons.
ततो भुशुण्डीः शूलानि मुसलानि परश्वथान्। शक्तीश्च विविधाकाराः शतघ्नीश्च शितान्क्षुरान्
Then he hurled bhuśuṇḍīs, spears, clubs, axes, and missiles of various forms, as well as shataghnis and sharp razors.
तां मायांविविधां दृष्ट्वा दशग्रीवस्य रक्षसः। भयात्प्रदुद्रुवुः सर्वे वानराः सर्वतोदिशम्
Seeing the various illusions of the rakshasa Ravana, all the monkeys fled in every direction out of fear.
ततः सुपत्रं सुमुखंहेमपुङ्गं शरोत्तमम्। तूणादादाय काकुत्स्थो ब्रह्मास्त्रेण युयोज ह
Then Kakutstha took from his quiver a superb arrow, well-feathered, with a fine tip and golden shaft, and fitted it with the Brahma weapon.
तं प्रेक्ष्यबाणं रामेण ब्रह्मास्त्रेणानुमन्त्रितम्। जहृषुर्देवगन्धर्वा दृष्ट्वा शक्रपुरोगमाः
Seeing that arrow, consecrated by Rama with the Brahma weapon, the gods and Gandharvas, led by Indra, rejoiced upon witnessing it.
अल्पावशेषमायुश्च ततोऽमन्यन्त रक्षसः। ब्रह्मास्त्रोदीरणाच्छत्रोर्देवदानवकिंनराः
Then, the gods, demons, and Kinnaras believed that the Rakshasa's life was nearly spent, after the Brahma weapon was invoked against the lord of the Rakshasas.
ततः ससर्ज तं रामः शरमप्रतिमौजसम्। रावणान्तकरं घोरं ब्रह्मदण्डमिवोद्यतम्
Then Rama released that arrow, unmatched in power, dreadful and destined to end Ravana, raised like the staff of Brahma.
मुक्तमात्रेण रामेण दूराकृष्टेन भारत। स तेन राक्षसश्रेष्ठः सरथः साश्वसारथिः। प्रजज्वाल महाज्वालेनाग्निनाभिपरिप्लुतः
As soon as Rama released it, drawn from afar, O Bharata, the foremost Rakshasa, with his chariot, horses, and charioteer, was engulfed by a great blaze, surrounded by fire.
ततः प्रहृष्टास्त्रिदशाः सहगन्धर्वचारणाः। निहतं रावणं दृष्ट्वा रामेणाक्लिष्टकर्मणा
Then the delighted gods, along with Gandharvas and Charanas, seeing Ravana slain by Rama, whose deeds were unblemished, rejoiced.
तत्यजुस्तं महाभागं पञ्चभूतानि रावणम्। भ्रंशितः सर्वलोकेषु स हि ब्रह्मास्त्रतेजसा
The five elements abandoned the illustrious Ravana; he fell in all worlds, overcome by the brilliance of the Brahma weapon.
शरीरधातवो ह्यस् मासं रुधिरमेव च। नेशुर्ब्रह्मास्त्रनिर्दग्दा न च भस्माप्यदृश्यत
The bodily substances and blood, burned by the Brahma weapon, could not endure; nor was even ash seen.
स हत्वा रावयणं क्षुद्रं राक्षसेनद्रं सुरद्विषम्। बभूव हृष्टः ससुहृद्रामः सौमित्रिणा सह
Having slain Ravana, the petty lord of Rakshasas and enemy of the gods, Rama became joyful, together with his friends and Saumitri.
ततो हते दशग्रीवे देवाः सर्षिपुरोगमाः। आशीर्भिर्जययुक्ताभिरानर्चुस्तं महाभुजम्
Then, with the ten-headed Ravana slain, the gods, led by sages, honored that mighty-armed one with blessings and words of victory.
रामं कमलपत्राक्षं तुष्टुवुः सर्वदेवताः। गन्धर्वाः पुष्पवर्षैश्च वाग्भिश्च त्रिदशालयाः
All the gods praised Rama, lotus-eyed, and the Gandharvas showered flowers, while the dwellers of heaven offered words.
पूजयित्वा रणे रामं प्रतिजग्मुर्यथागतम्। तन्महोत्सवसंकाशमासीदाकाशमच्युत
Having worshipped Rama in battle, they departed as they had come; the sky was filled with festivity, O Achyuta.
ततो हत्वा दशग्रीवं लङ्कां रामो महायशाः। विभीषणाय प्रददौ प्रभुः परपुरंजयः
Then, having slain the ten-headed Ravana, Rama, renowned for his glory, gave Lanka to Vibhishana, the conqueror of enemy cities.
