By the hundreds, the vanaras slew the rākṣasas, and the rākṣasas slew the vanaras; yet, in that place, mostly the rākṣasas were killed, not the vanaras.
Then, hearing that Kumbhakarṇa had been slain in battle along with his followers, as well as Prahasta, the great archer, and Dhūmrākṣa, of immense energy—
Rāvaṇa addressed his heroic son Indrajit: 'Destroy Rāma, the enemy-slayer, and Sugrīva along with Lakṣmaṇa.'
For by you, my noble son, my fame has been brilliantly earned, having conquered Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt, and Śacī's lord, in battle.
Whether hidden or visible, with divine, boon-given arrows, destroy the enemies, O slayer of foes, foremost among weapon-bearers.
Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, and Sugrīva, O faultless one, are not able to withstand the touch of your arrows, nor are their followers.
The defeat that Prahasta and Kumbhakarṇa suffered, O faultless one, and the disgrace of Khara in battle—go now, O mighty-armed, and avenge it.
Today, slaying the enemies and their armies with sharp arrows, bring me joy, my son, as you once did after conquering Indra.
Thus addressed, he replied, 'So be it,' and, mounting his chariot, resolute, Indrajit swiftly set out for the battlefield.
Then, loudly proclaiming his name, the foremost of rākṣasas challenged Lakṣmaṇa, of auspicious marks, to battle.
Lakṣmaṇa advanced upon him, grasping his bow with arrows, intimidating him with its thunderous sound, as a lion frightens a small animal.
Between the two, a great battle arose, both eager for victory, skilled in divine weapons, fiercely contending with each other.
When Rāvaṇa saw that he could not overpower him with arrows, the mighty one exerted himself with even greater effort.
Then, with great speed, he assailed him with javelins; but Saumitri cut down those incoming weapons with sharp arrows.
Those javelins, severed by keen arrows, fell to the earth; hundreds were shattered by the king Rāvaṇa.
Then Aṅgada, the illustrious son of Vāli, seized a tree, rushed forward with great speed, and struck him on the head.
Then, as Prasena, full of valor, rushed in confusion to strike him with his spear, Lakshmana cut down that spear.
Ravana’s son, approaching the heroic Angada, struck that foremost of monkeys on his left side with his mace.
Angada, son of Vali, strong and enraged, hurled a great sala tree at Indrajit in response to that fierce blow.
That tree, released by Angada to slay Indrajit, was destroyed by Indrajit, O Partha, along with the chariot, horses, and charioteer.
Then, after his horses and charioteer were slain, Ravana’s son leapt from his chariot and vanished there by his magic, O King.
Knowing that the rakshasa, skilled in many illusions, had disappeared, Rama came to that place and protected his army.
Then, aiming at Rama, Indrajit wounded him and the mighty Lakshmana in all their limbs with arrows granted by boons.
Though invisible and hidden by illusion, Indrajit fought both Rama and Lakshmana, who were valiant, with arrows.
Then, in anger, he released arrows by the hundreds and thousands at those two lion-like men, striking them in all their limbs.
The monkeys, searching for the unseen Indrajit who ceaselessly shot arrows, entered the sky, seizing great rocks.
That rakshasa, though unseen, struck those monkeys with arrows, and, veiled by illusion, Ravani fiercely attacked them.
Those two heroes, Rama and Lakshmana, tormented by arrows, fell from the sky to the earth like the sun and moon.
Seeing both brothers, Rama and Lakshmana, fallen, Ravani again bound them with arrows granted by boons.
Those two tiger-like men, bound in battle by Indrajit’s net of arrows, shone like birds in a cage.
