ततः शब्दो महानासीत्तुमुलो रोमहर्षणः। रामरावणसैन्यानामन्योन्यमभिधावताम्
Then a great and tumultuous sound arose, hair-raising, as the armies of Rāma and Rāvaṇa rushed against each other.
तस्मिन्प्रवृत्ते संग्रामे घोरे रुधिरकर्दमे। क्षूम्राक्षः कपिसैन्यं तद्द्रावयामास पत्रिभिः
As that dreadful battle began, with mud of blood, Dhūmrākṣa drove back the army of monkeys with arrows.
तं स रक्षोमहामात्रमापतन्तं सपत्नजित्। प्रतिजग्राह हनुमांस्तरसा पवनात्मजः
That mighty Rākṣasa, conqueror of foes, charging forward, was confronted with force by Hanumān, the son of the Wind.
तयोर्युद्धमभूदधोरं हरिराक्षसवीरयोः। जीगीषतोर्युधाऽन्योन्यमिन्द्रप्रह्लादयोरिवं
A fierce battle arose between the heroic monkey and the Rākṣasa, each desiring victory over the other, like that between Indra and Prahlāda.
कगदाभिः परिघैश्चैव राक्षसो जघ्निवान्कपिम्। कपिश्च जघ्निवान्रः सस्कन्धविटपैर्द्रुमैः
The Rākṣasa struck the monkey with maces and iron clubs, while the monkey struck the Rākṣasa with trees bearing branches and foliage.
ततस्तमतिकोपेन साश्वं सरथसारथिम्। धूम्राक्षमवधीत्क्रुद्धो हनूमान्मारुतात्मजः
Then, enraged, Hanumān, son of the Wind, slew Dhūmrākṣa, along with his horses, chariot, and charioteer.
ततस्तं निहतं दृष्ट्वा धूम्राक्षं राक्षसोत्तमम्। हरयो जातविश्रम्भा जघ्नुरन्ये च सैनिकान्
Then, seeing Dhūmrākṣa, the foremost of Rākṣasas, slain, the monkeys, gaining confidence, struck down the other soldiers as well.
ते वध्यमाना हरिभिर्बलिभिर्जितकाशिभिः। राक्षसा भग्नसंकल्पा लङ्कामभ्यपतन्भयात्
Assailed by the powerful and victorious monkeys, the Rākṣasas, their resolve broken, fled in fear toward Laṅkā.
तेऽभिपत्य पुरं भग्ना हतशेषा निशाचराः। सर्वं राज्ञे यथावृत्तं रावणाय न्यवेदयन्
Those defeated night-wanderers, the few survivors, entered the city and reported everything that had happened to their king, Rāvaṇa.
श्रुत्वा तु रावणस्तेभ्यः प्रहस्तं निहतं युधि। धूम्राक्षं च महेष्वासं ससैन्यं सहराक्षसैः
Hearing from them that Prahasta had been slain in battle, and that Dhūmrākṣa, the great archer, along with his army and Rākṣasas, was dead,
सुदीर्घमिव निःश्वस्य समुत्पत्य वरासनात्। उवाच कुम्भकर्णस्य कर्मकालोऽयमागतः
Heaving a long sigh, Rāvaṇa rose from his splendid throne and said, 'Now the time for Kumbhakarṇa's action has come.'
इत्येवमुक्त्वा विविधैर्वादित्रैः सुमहास्वनैः। शयानमतिनिद्रालुं कुम्भकर्णमबोधयत्
Having spoken thus, with various loud-sounding instruments, they awakened Kumbhakarṇa, who was lying in deep sleep.
प्रबोध्य महता चैनं यत्नेनाऽऽगतसाध्वसः। स्वस्थमासीनमव्यग्रं विनिद्रं राक्षसाधिपः। ततोऽब्रवीद्दशग्रीवः कुम्भकर्णं महाबलम्
After awakening him with great effort, and seeing him free from fear, composed, undisturbed, and fully awake, the lord of the Rakshasas then spoke to Kumbhakarna, mighty in strength.
धन्योसि यस्य ते निद्रा कुम्भकर्णेयमीदृशी। य इदं दारुणं कालं न जानीषे महाभयम्
Fortunate are you, Kumbhakarna, to have such sleep, for you do not know of this dreadful time, this great danger.
एष तीर्त्वाऽर्णवं रामः सेतुना हरिभिः सह। अवमत्येह नः सर्वान्करोति कदनं महत्
Rama, having crossed the ocean with the monkeys by means of a bridge, now scorns us all here and brings about great slaughter.
मया त्वपहृता भार्या सीता नामास्य जानकी। तां नेतुं स इहायातो बद्ध्वा सेतुं महार्णवे
It was I who took his wife, Sita, daughter of Janaka; and he has come here to reclaim her, having built a bridge over the vast ocean.
तेन चैव प्रहस्तादिर्महान्नः स्वजनो हतः। तस्य नान्यो निहन्ताऽस्ति त्वामृतेशत्रुकर्शन
By him, even Prahasta and our other great warriors have been slain; there is no one else who can kill him except you, destroyer of enemies.
सदंशितोऽभिनिर्याहि त्वमद्य बलिनांवर। रामादीन्समरे सर्वाञ्जहि शत्रूनरिंदम
Therefore, you, best among the strong, go forth today, and in battle destroy all the enemies led by Rama, O subduer of foes.
दूषणावरजौ चैव वज्रवेगप्रमाथिनौ। तौ त्वां बलेन महता सहितावनुयास्यतः
Dushana's younger brothers, mighty as the force of a thunderbolt, will accompany you with their great strength.
इत्युक्त्वा राक्षुसपतिः कुम्भकर्णं तरस्विनम्। संदिदेशेतिकर्तव्ये वज्रवेगप्रमाथिनौ
Having spoken thus, the lord of the Rakshasas instructed the two, Vajravega and Pramathin, regarding their duties.
तथ्त्युक्त्वा युतौ वीरौ रावणं दूषाणानुजौ। कुम्भकर्णं पुरस्कृत्य तूर्णं निर्ययतुः पुरात्
After receiving these instructions, the two heroes, Dushana's brothers, quickly set out from the city with Kumbhakarna at their head.
ततो निर्याय स्वपुरात्कुम्भकर्णः सहानुगः। अपश्यत्कपिसैन्यं रतज्जितकाश्यग्रतः स्थितम्
Then Kumbhakarna, leaving his city with his followers, saw the monkey army standing in front, shining with chariots and banners.
स वीक्षमाणस्तत्सैन्यं रामदर्शनकाङ्क्षया। अपश्यच्चापि सौमित्रिं धनुष्पाणिं व्यवस्थितम्
Looking over that army, seeking to see Rama, he also beheld Saumitri, standing ready with bow in hand.
तमभ्येत्याशु हरयः परिवब्रुः समन्ततः। `शैलवृक्षायुधा नादानमुञ्चन्भीषणास्ततः
Then the monkeys quickly surrounded him on all sides, making terrifying noises, armed with mountains and trees.
अभ्यघ्नंश्च महाकायैर्बहुभिर्जगतीरुहैः। करजैरतुदंश्चान्ये विहाय भयमुत्तमम्
With their huge bodies, many struck him with trees from the earth, while others scratched him with their nails, casting aside all fear.
बहुधा युध्यमानास्ते युद्धमार्गैः प्लवंगमाः। नानाप्रहरणैर्भीमै राक्षसेन्द्रमताडयन्
Fighting in many ways, the monkeys attacked the lord of the Rakshasas with various dreadful weapons along the paths of battle.
स ताड्यमानः प्रहसन्भक्षयामास वानरान्। बलं चण्डबलाख्यं च वज्रबाहुं च वानरम्
Though being struck, he laughed and began to devour the monkeys, including Bala, Chanda-bala, and Vajrabahu the monkey.
तद्दृष्ट्वा व्यथनं कर्म कुम्भकर्णस्य रक्षसः। उदक्रोशन्परित्रस्तास्तारप्रभृतयस्तदा
Seeing this terrifying act of Kumbhakarna, Tara and the others, overcome with fear, cried out in distress.
तानुच्चैः क्रोशतः सैन्याञ्श्रुत्वा स हरियूथपान्। अभिदुद्राव सुग्रीवः कुम्भकर्णमपेतभीः
Hearing the loud cries of those troops, Sugriva, fearless, rushed at Kumbhakarna along with the monkey leaders.
ततो निपत्य वेगेन कुम्भकर्णं महामना। सालेन जघ्निवान्मूर्ध्निं बलेन कपिकुञ्जरः
Then, leaping forward with speed, Sugriva, the foremost of monkeys, struck Kumbhakarna on the head with a great sala tree.
