Seen by the mighty monkeys, skilled at striking from afar, they were all slain, O King, and fell lifeless to the earth.
Unable to endure this, Rāvaṇa, with his army, went forth, surrounded by the terrible forces of rākṣasas and goblins.
Skilled in the science of warfare, like another Uśanas, he arrayed his troops in the Uśanas formation and advanced against the monkeys.
Rāghava, seeing the ten-headed one’s army drawn up, arranged his own in the Bārhaspatya formation and stood ready in opposition.
There, Rāvaṇa engaged in battle with Rāma; likewise, Lakṣmaṇa fought with Indrajit.
Sugrīva fought with Virūpākṣa, Niśvarvaṭa with Tāra, Nala with Pauṇḍra, and Paduśa with Panasa.
Each fought with the one he considered his equal, relying on the strength of his own arms in the time of battle.
That clash grew fierce, terrifying the timid, and making the hair stand on end, dreadful as the ancient battle of gods and asuras.
Rāvaṇa assailed Rāma with showers of spears, tridents, and swords, sharp and made of iron; and Rāghava likewise attacked Rāvaṇa.
In the same way, Lakṣmaṇa, with piercing arrows, struck at Indrajit, and Indrajit wounded Saumitri with many shafts.
Vibhīṣaṇa and Prahasta rained sharp, feathered arrows on each other, neither showing any sign of pain.
As these mighty warriors unleashed their great weapons, all three worlds—moving and unmoving—were seized with fear.
Then Prahasta suddenly approached Vibhīṣaṇa and, roaring fiercely in battle, struck him with his mace.
Struck by that terrible, swift mace, the wise and mighty-armed Vibhīṣaṇa did not waver, firm as Mount Himavat.
Then Vibhīṣaṇa, seizing the massive mace adorned with a hundred bells, invoked the great power and hurled it at the head.
Struck by that swiftly-falling mace, the Rākṣasa, his head torn away by the force, appeared like a tree broken by the wind.
Seeing Prahasta, the night-roaming Rākṣasa, slain in battle, Dhūmrākṣa rushed furiously at the monkeys with great speed.
His army, vast as a cloud and terrifying to behold, charged forward; but at the sight, the foremost monkeys suddenly scattered in the battle.
Then, seeing those leading monkeys suddenly scattered, Hanumān, the tiger among monkeys and son of the Wind, went forth.
Seeing the son of the Wind standing firm in battle, the monkeys, with great eagerness, all turned back.
Then a great and tumultuous sound arose, hair-raising, as the armies of Rāma and Rāvaṇa rushed against each other.
As that dreadful battle began, with mud of blood, Dhūmrākṣa drove back the army of monkeys with arrows.
That mighty Rākṣasa, conqueror of foes, charging forward, was confronted with force by Hanumān, the son of the Wind.
A fierce battle arose between the heroic monkey and the Rākṣasa, each desiring victory over the other, like that between Indra and Prahlāda.
The Rākṣasa struck the monkey with maces and iron clubs, while the monkey struck the Rākṣasa with trees bearing branches and foliage.
Then, enraged, Hanumān, son of the Wind, slew Dhūmrākṣa, along with his horses, chariot, and charioteer.
Then, seeing Dhūmrākṣa, the foremost of Rākṣasas, slain, the monkeys, gaining confidence, struck down the other soldiers as well.
Assailed by the powerful and victorious monkeys, the Rākṣasas, their resolve broken, fled in fear toward Laṅkā.
Those defeated night-wanderers, the few survivors, entered the city and reported everything that had happened to their king, Rāvaṇa.
Hearing from them that Prahasta had been slain in battle, and that Dhūmrākṣa, the great archer, along with his army and Rākṣasas, was dead,
