Fasting, devoted to austerity, longing to see her husband, matted-haired, smeared with filth, emaciated, distressed, she was a woman engaged in penance.
By various signs I found Sita, and approaching her in solitude, I spoke to the noble lady.
O Sita, I am Rama's messenger, a vanara, son of the Wind; desiring to see you, I have arrived here through the sky.
The royal sons, Rama and Lakshmana, are safe; both are protected by Sugriva, lord of all the vanaras.
Rama, together with Saumitri, sends you his regards, O Sita; out of friendship, Sugriva also inquires about your well-being.
Your husband will soon come to you with all the vanaras; trust me, O lady, I am a vanara, not a rakshasa.
After pondering for a moment, Sita replied to me: 'I recognize you, Hanuman, from Avindhya's words.'
For Avindhya, mighty-armed and esteemed by the elders, described Sugriva surrounded by counselors like you.
Saying 'Go,' Sita gave me this jewel from her foot, by which Vaidehi, blameless, has marked this time.
For assurance, Janaki narrated this story: how she threw a blade of grass at a crow on the great mountain of Chitrakuta.
By you, tiger among men, for the purpose of recognition: 'The crow, with one eye injured, was indeed made wicked.'
Having made myself known and burned that city, I returned; thus Rama honored the one who spoke pleasing words.
Then, as Rama sat there with them, the foremost monkeys arrived at Sugriva's command.
Surrounded by a hundred thousand crores of powerful monkeys, the illustrious Sushena, father-in-law of Vali, approached Rama.
Even Gaja and Gavaya, each surrounded by hundreds of crores, those mighty monkey chiefs, appeared separately.
Sixty thousand crores were led by Golangula, O great king, Gavaksha of terrible appearance.
Gandhamadana, famed as the dweller of Gandhamadana, drew together hundreds of thousands of monkeys.
Panasa, wise and immensely strong, gathered ten, twelve, thirty, and five crores of monkeys.
The illustrious Dadhimukha, an elder among monkeys and exceedingly powerful, assembled a great army of monkeys of fierce energy.
Among the black-faced bears of mighty deeds, ten, twelve, thirty, and five crores were gathered.
These and many other chiefs of monkey troops, countless in number, O King, came together for Rama's cause.
A tumultuous sound was heard from those rushing here and there, like lions roaring and resembling mountain peaks.
Some were like mountain summits, some like mighty buffaloes, some resembled autumn clouds, and some were like red forests.
Leaping, flying, and running, the monkeys stirred up dust as they arrived from all sides.
With Sugriva's approval, the great monkey army, vast as a full ocean, made camp there.
Then, when all the monkey leaders had assembled, on an auspicious day, under a favorable star and honored hour,
With that arrayed army, as if overturning the worlds, the illustrious Raghava set out together with Sugriva.
Hanuman, son of the wind, was at the front of the army; Saumitri, fearless, guarded the rear.
The Raghavas, with their fingers bound in protective leather, proceeded there, surrounded by great monkey generals, like the moon and sun among the planets.
That monkey army, armed with sala, tala, and stone weapons, shone greatly, like a vast mansion of tall grains at sunrise.
