'How can there be union between us, seen by these?' Thus addressed, the lord created a mist.
By which the entire region became as if enveloped in darkness; seeing the mist thus created by the great sage,

The maiden became astonished and bashful, devoted to austerity.
Because of union with you, O sinless one, my maidenhood will be lost; if my virginity is defiled, how will I be able to return home, best of twice-born?

Having received her boon, delighted and adorned with the qualities of womanhood, she entered into union with the sage of wondrous deeds.
Men on earth perceived her fragrance from a yojana away.
Because of her fragrance reaching a yojana, she was thereafter known by another name; thus Satyavati, joyful, obtained her unrivaled boon.

He is famed as Ani Mandavya, the illustrious one; long ago, the great sage summoned Dharma and spoke these words.
In childhood, I pierced a single Shakuntika bird with a reed; I remember this as my sin, Dharma, I recall no other evil.
Why then did my immeasurable ascetic merit not prevail? The killing of a Brahmin is heavier than the slaying of all creatures.
Therefore, you shall be born from the womb of a Shudra, because of this sin.
