When water had covered the entire surface of the earth, then, in that single ocean, the Lord moved about in many forms.
Like a firefly in the night during the rainy season, he then sought the earth everywhere, searching for a place to stand.
Seeing the earth submerged in water, he wished in his mind to lift her up: 'In what form should I raise the earth from the water?'
Thus reflecting in his mind, and seeing with his divine eye, he remembered the boar form, suited for play in the waters.
Assuming the form of a boar, as described in the Vedas, vast as ten yojanas wide and a hundred yojanas long,
Resembling a great mountain in size, with sharp, blazing tusks, roaring like a mass of thunderclouds, dark as a rain-laden cloud,
Becoming the sacrificial boar, the Lord entered the waters; lifting the earth with one tusk, he placed her in her own position.
Again, the mighty-armed Lord assumed an unprecedented form: half-man and half-lion.
Entering the assembly of the Daitya king, touching him with his hand, the primeval foe of the gods, the son of Diti, stood there.
Seeing that unprecedented form, Hiraṇyakaśipu, garlanded and holding a trident aloft, his eyes red with rage, then—
Roaring like thunderclouds, resembling a mass of dark clouds, the heroic foe of the gods, born of Diti, rushed at Narasimha.
Then, leaping up, the powerful lord in the form of Narasimha, the lion-man, tore him apart with his sharp claws.
Thus, after slaying the Daitya Andhaka, the blessed Lord, the lotus-eyed, for the welfare of the worlds, was again born as the illustrious son of Kashyapa, carried in the womb of Aditi.

He appeared like a dark raincloud on a gloomy day, with radiant eyes, of dwarf form, holding a staff and water-pot, adorned with the Srivatsa mark on his chest, matted-haired, wearing the sacred thread, the blessed Lord assuming the form of a boy.
The illustrious one went to the sacrificial ground of the lord of the Daityas; accompanied by Brihaspati, he entered the sacrifice of Bali.
Seeing that dwarf-bodied one, Bali, delighted, spoke: 'I am pleased by your sight, O Brahmin. Tell me, what shall I give you?'
Thus addressed by Bali, Vamana replied:
Saying 'Let it be well,' the god, smiling, addressed Bali: 'O lord of the Daityas, grant me three steps of land.'
Bali, with a cheerful heart, gave to the Brahmin of immeasurable brilliance; then Vishnu, the taker of the three strides, assumed a wondrous, divine form.
With three unshakable strides, he swiftly seized the earth; Vishnu, the eternal god, gave the earth to Shakra.

He is the god without beginning or end, unborn, the Lord revered by the worlds; those who know the gods go to him, O Saindhava, whose deeds are such.

As an ally, the lotus-eyed, illustrious one of immeasurable prowess, mounting the same chariot as Partha, the slayer of enemy heroes.
He cannot be conquered even by the intolerable hosts of the gods; who then among men could defeat Partha in battle?
Except for him alone, you will be able to vanquish all the forces of Yudhishthira; the four Pandavas, O king, you will conquer in a single day.
