Bhima, shouting 'Stop! Stop!' rushed at him with force; but Partha, compassionate, called out, 'Do not kill him.'
Jayadratha, seeing the two brothers advancing with weapons raised, fled swiftly, undisturbed, desperate to save his life and deeply distressed.
With the thicket covered in creepers, his jewel-bright crown was cast aside as he ran, hiding himself within the depths of the forest.
Bhimasena, searching for him in the thicket as he hid in terror, quickly dismounted from his gem-adorned chariot, rushed at him, and seized him by the hair in his fury.
Then Bhima, lifting him up, struck him to the ground; grasping the king by the throat, he threw him down.
Again, as he tried to rise, Bhima, mighty-armed, struck his head with his foot as he wailed.
Bhima struck his knees and hit him with his fist; the king, tormented by the mighty blows, fell into a swoon.
Phalguna restrained the enraged Bhimasena, saying, 'O Kaurava, for the sake of Duhshala, the king has spoken to you.'
This man, whose conduct is wicked, does not deserve to live; he is a wretch among men who has caused suffering to Krishna, who did not merit such distress.
What can I do, since the king is always compassionate, and you, with childish understanding, continually restrain us?
Having spoken thus, Vrikodara struck him five times with his sword, using arrows shaped like half-moons, as he uttered a few words.
After considering the king, Vrikodara then spoke: If you wish to live, fool, listen to the condition I state.
You must declare, 'I am a slave,' both in assemblies and gatherings; if you do so, I will grant you life, for this is the rule for one defeated in battle.
Struggling, King Jayadratha replied to the tiger among men, Bhima, who shone in battle, saying, 'So be it.'
Then, as he moved about, Vrikodara bound him and placed him, unconscious and covered in dust, onto the chariot.
After mounting the chariot, Bhima, accompanied by Partha, went to Yudhishthira, who was in the foremost hermitage.
Bhima showed Jayadratha in that condition; the king laughed upon seeing him and said, 'Release him.'
Bhima said to the king, 'Tell Draupadi that this evil-minded one has become a slave to the Pandavas.'
Then the eldest brother affectionately spoke: 'Let us release this one of vile conduct, if you consider us worthy.'
Draupadi, looking at Bhima and Yudhishthira, said: 'He is a slave; let him be released. You have marked him with five locks.'
Thus addressed by his brother and by Krishna, Bhima released the great sinner, Jayadratha, who was unconscious.
Freed, he approached the king, saluted Yudhishthira, and, trembling, bowed to the elders and sages present.
The compassionate king, Yudhishthira, son of Dharma, spoke to him, having seen Jayadratha captured by Savyasachi.
You are no longer a slave; go, you are freed. Never act so again anywhere. Shame on you, lustful for women, base one, allied with low Kshatriyas.
Who among men would do such a thing as you have done, wretch? This act is contrary to dharma and corrupts the world, O evil-minded one.
Seeing him as if bereft of life, the perpetrator of evil, the best of Bharatas, the king, felt compassion for him.
May your understanding grow in righteousness; do not set your mind on unrighteousness. With these words, go in peace, Jayadratha.
Thus addressed, the king, together with his retinue, silent and with his face cast down, departed in sorrow towards Gangadvara, O Bharata.
He sought refuge with the god Virupaksha, the consort of Uma, and performed severe austerities; Vṛṣadhvaja was pleased with him.
The three-eyed god, delighted, personally accepted his offering, and granted him a boon; hear what he received.
