O king, go with the twins and the great-souled Dhaumya to the hermitage, and there console Draupadi.
That foolish Sindhu king will not escape me alive, even if his charioteer were Indra and he hid at the bottom of the netherworld.
But, mighty-armed one, the wicked Sindhu must not be killed, remembering Duḥśalā and the illustrious Gandhari.
Hearing this, Draupadi, her senses agitated, angry yet dignified and wise, spoke to her husbands Bhima and Arjuna.
If you wish to do what pleases me, that wretch among men, the sinful, evil-minded, disgrace of his lineage, the Sindhu, must be slain.
He who assaults a wife, who is an enemy and usurper of a kingdom, even if he begs in battle, must never be released.
Thus addressed, those two tigers among men went where the Sindhu was, while the king, taking Krishna and the priest, turned back.
He entered the hermitage, its sacred grass scattered, and saw it filled with Markandeya and other brahmins.
Surrounded by his brothers and wife, the wise king arrived among those brahmins, who were grieving for Draupadi.
Seeing the king return again, victorious over the Sindhus and Sauvīras and having brought back Draupadi, they rejoiced.
There, surrounded by them, the king sat down; and the radiant Krishna, together with the two sons of Dharma, entered the hermitage.
Bhimasena and Arjuna, hearing that their enemy was within shouting distance, themselves urged their horses and swiftly gave chase.
Here, Arjuna, the mighty charioteer, performed a most astonishing feat: he struck down the horses of the Sindhu king from a distance of a shout.
Endowed with divine weapons, unshaken even in difficulty, he accomplished a deed hard to perform, using arrows empowered by mantras.
Then the two heroes, Bhima and Dhananjaya, rushed at the Sindhu king, whose horses were slain, who was alone, terrified, and distraught.
Seeing his horses thus killed, the Sindhu king was deeply distressed; leaping from his chariot, he fled away on foot.
Seeing Dhananjaya performing deeds of blazing valor, he, intent on escape, ran into the forest.
Observing the Sindhu king fleeing with all his might, the mighty-armed Phalguna pursued him and spoke these words:
How, lacking in strength, do you seek to seize a woman by force? O prince, turn back; it is not fitting for you to flee.
How can you abandon your followers and flee in the midst of enemies? Though addressed thus by Partha, the Sindhu king did not turn back.
Bhima, shouting 'Stop! Stop!' rushed at him with force; but Partha, compassionate, called out, 'Do not kill him.'
Jayadratha, seeing the two brothers advancing with weapons raised, fled swiftly, undisturbed, desperate to save his life and deeply distressed.
With the thicket covered in creepers, his jewel-bright crown was cast aside as he ran, hiding himself within the depths of the forest.
Bhimasena, searching for him in the thicket as he hid in terror, quickly dismounted from his gem-adorned chariot, rushed at him, and seized him by the hair in his fury.
Then Bhima, lifting him up, struck him to the ground; grasping the king by the throat, he threw him down.
Again, as he tried to rise, Bhima, mighty-armed, struck his head with his foot as he wailed.
Bhima struck his knees and hit him with his fist; the king, tormented by the mighty blows, fell into a swoon.
Phalguna restrained the enraged Bhimasena, saying, 'O Kaurava, for the sake of Duhshala, the king has spoken to you.'
This man, whose conduct is wicked, does not deserve to live; he is a wretch among men who has caused suffering to Krishna, who did not merit such distress.
What can I do, since the king is always compassionate, and you, with childish understanding, continually restrain us?
