Nakula, sword and shield in hand, leapt from his chariot, stood firm on the ground, and took his position like a mountain.
Suratha, enraged, sent his great elephant with its raised trunk to slay Nakula.
As the elephant circled near, Nakula struck off its tusked arm at the root with his sword.
That elephant, adorned with bells, roared loudly and, falling headlong to the ground, crushed its rider.
Having accomplished that great deed, the valiant son of Madri, that mighty car-warrior, reached Bhimasena's chariot and found safety.
As King Kotikashya rushed upon him in battle, Bhima, while the king's charioteer was urging on the horses, struck off his head with a razor-sharp weapon.
The king, strong-armed, did not realize his charioteer had been slain; then, as their driver was killed, his horses fled here and there on the battlefield.
Bhima, foremost among attackers, approached that chariotless, driverless king and struck him with his palm, like a lion, O Pandava.
Arjuna, with sharp arrows, cut down the bows and heads of all twelve Sauvira leaders.
That great atiratha slew the foremost among the Shibis, Ikshvakus, Trigartas, and Sindhus who came within range of his arrows in battle.
Many warriors were seen struck down by Savyasacin, along with elephants bearing banners and great chariot-warriors with standards.
Headless bodies, lifeless and severed heads, covered the earth, standing everywhere on the battlefield.
Dogs, vultures, herons, crows, jackals, and ravens feasted insatiably on the flesh and blood of the slain heroes there.
Thus, with the fierce flames of his arrows fanned by the wind of Gandiva, Partha, blazing with wrath, swiftly consumed the army as fire consumes fuel.
O king, heaps of fallen wheels, yokes, quivers, banners, and standards lay scattered with the chariots.
There were piles of axles, poles, triple bamboo shafts, wheels, yoke-pins, and goads as well.
There were also heaps of severed heads adorned with earrings and turbans, arms with crowns, and necklaces with armlets.
Umbrellas, fans, hides, armor, broken bows, and swords too were scattered about.
Piles of spears, swords, clubs, and maces were seen here and there, O lord of men.
With fallen elephants like mountains, along with their warriors, and horses split in two with their riders and weapons, the field was covered.
With shattered chariots and slain foot-soldiers strewn about, the earth became impassable, thick with mud of flesh and blood.
When those heroes were slain, King Jayadratha of Sindhu, terrified, released Krishna and became intent on fleeing.
In that tumultuous army, the wretched man, seeking to save his own life, set Draupadi down and fled into the forest.
But King Yudhishthira, seeing Draupadi with Dhaumya at the front and the heroic son of Madri, then lifted her onto the chariot.
Then, as Jayadratha's army fled in disorder, Bhima struck them again and again with sharp arrows.
Arjuna, seeing Jayadratha running away, restrained Bhima, who was slaying the Sindhu soldiers.
Because of whose offense we have suffered this unbearable distress, I do not see Jayadratha here on this battlefield.
Pursue only that fool, that deceitful, wicked one who brought suffering to Draupadi; what use is there for you in slaying these warriors? This deed brings no gain—how do you regard it?
Thus addressed by the wise Gudakesha, Bhimasena, turning to Yudhishthira, spoke these words:
The enemy, their champions slain, have mostly fled in all directions; O King, take Draupadi and return from here.
