Thus have I described the sons of Pāṇḍu, whom you, in your delusion, have scorned and opposed. If you escape from them with your life, you will be reborn and live again.
Then the five sons of Pāṇḍu, equal to five Indras, left behind the terrified, supplicant foot soldiers, and, restraining themselves in anger, unleashed a darkness of arrow-rain upon the enemy ranks.
"Stand firm! Strike swiftly! Surround them!" Thus did the Sindhu king urge his warriors on.
Then, in that battle, a most terrible sound arose as Bhīma, Arjuna, and Yudhiṣṭhira were seen among the armies.
Fear arose among the Śibis, Sindhus, and Trigartas, seeing those tiger-like men, fierce as tigers in strength.
Bhīma, grasping his great iron mace studded with gold, rushed at the Sindhu king, impelled by fate.
Then, turning aside, Kotikashya advanced, surrounding Vrikodara with a great array of chariots.
Though assailed by many heroic arms with spears, javelins, and arrows, Bhima did not waver.
Bhima struck down an elephant with its rider and fourteen foot soldiers at the front of the Saindhava banner, wielding his mace.
Partha, desiring to reach Sauvira, slew five hundred mighty warriors from the Parvata region at the head of the army.
The king himself, among the foremost and bravest of the Suviras, struck down a hundred in the battle in a mere instant.
There Nakula was seen leaping from his chariot, sword in hand, repeatedly cutting off the heads of the foot soldiers like scattering seeds.
Sahadeva, advancing with his chariot against the elephant warriors, brought them down with arrows as birds are felled from trees.
Then the Trigarta, descending from his great chariot with mace in hand, killed four horses of the king.
As that foot soldier approached, King Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, struck him in the chest with a crescent-tipped arrow.
That hero, his heart pierced, vomited blood and fell forward to the ground like a tree with its roots cut.
Then Indrasena's son, the king, having lost his horses, leapt from his chariot and mounted Sahadeva's great chariot.
Ksemankara and Mahamukha, enclosing Nakula, showered him from both sides with sharp volleys of arrows.
As those two rained arrows like storm clouds, the son of Madri struck each of them down with a single, well-aimed arrow.
Then Suratha, king of the Trigartas, mounted his elephant and with it struck Nakula's chariot.
Nakula, sword and shield in hand, leapt from his chariot, stood firm on the ground, and took his position like a mountain.
Suratha, enraged, sent his great elephant with its raised trunk to slay Nakula.
As the elephant circled near, Nakula struck off its tusked arm at the root with his sword.
That elephant, adorned with bells, roared loudly and, falling headlong to the ground, crushed its rider.
Having accomplished that great deed, the valiant son of Madri, that mighty car-warrior, reached Bhimasena's chariot and found safety.
As King Kotikashya rushed upon him in battle, Bhima, while the king's charioteer was urging on the horses, struck off his head with a razor-sharp weapon.
The king, strong-armed, did not realize his charioteer had been slain; then, as their driver was killed, his horses fled here and there on the battlefield.
Bhima, foremost among attackers, approached that chariotless, driverless king and struck him with his palm, like a lion, O Pandava.
Arjuna, with sharp arrows, cut down the bows and heads of all twelve Sauvira leaders.
That great atiratha slew the foremost among the Shibis, Ikshvakus, Trigartas, and Sindhus who came within range of his arrows in battle.
