नास्यापराद्धाः शेषमवाप्नुवन्ति नायं वैरं विस्मरते कदाचित्। वैरस्यान्तं संविधायोपयाति पश्चाच्छान्तिं न च तत्तप्यतीव
Those who offend him do not escape with their lives; he never forgets enmity. When he brings an end to a feud, only then does he make peace, and he does not regret it afterward.
धनुर्धराग्र्यो धृतिमान्यशस्वी जितेन्द्रियो वृद्धसेवी नृवीरः। भ्राता च शिष्यश्च युधिष्ठिरस्य धनंजयो नाम पतिर्ममैषः
Foremost among archers, steadfast, renowned, self-controlled, devoted to elders, a hero among men—he is both brother and disciple to Yudhiṣṭhira. This is Dhanañjaya, my husband.
यो वै न कामान्न भयान्न लोभा- त्त्यजेद्धर्मं न नृशंसं च कुर्यात्। स एष वैश्वानरतुल्यतेजाः कुन्तीसुतः शत्रुसहः प्रमाथी
He would never abandon righteousness for desire, fear, or greed, nor would he commit cruelty. This son of Kuntī, equal in brilliance to fire, destroyer of foes, is mighty indeed.
यः सर्वधर्मार्तविनिश्चयज्ञो भयार्तानां भयहर्ता मनीषी। `बन्धुप्रियः शस्त्रभृतां वरिष्ठो महाहवेष्वप्रतिवार्यवीर्यः
He knows the essence of all duties and their true meaning, relieves the fears of the frightened, is wise, dear to his kin, foremost among warriors, and in great battles his valor cannot be withstood.
यस्योत्तमं रूपमाहुः पृथिव्यां यं पाण्डवाः परिरक्षन्ति सर्वे। प्राणैर्गरीयांसमनुव्रतं वै स एष वीरो नकुलः पतिर्मे
He whose beauty is said to be unsurpassed on earth, whom all the Pāṇḍavas protect with their very lives, steadfast in loyalty—this hero is Nakula, my husband.
यः खङ्गयोधी लघुचित्रहस्तो महांश्च धीमान्सहदेवोऽद्वितीयः। यस्याद्यकर्म द्रक्ष्यसे मूढसत्व शतक्रतोर्वा दैत्यसेनासु सङ्ख्ये
He is a master of the sword, swift and skillful of hand, great and wise—Sahadeva, without equal. Today, you will witness his deeds, as Indra did among the armies of the Daityas.
शूरः कृतास्त्रो मतिमान्मनस्वी प्रियंकरो धर्मसुतस्य राज्ञः। हुताशचन्द्रार्कसमानतेजा जघन्यजः पाण्डवानां प्रियश्च
Valiant, skilled in weapons, intelligent, resolute, beloved of King Yudhiṣṭhira, his radiance like fire, moon, and sun, the youngest and dearest of the Pāṇḍavas.
बुद्ध्या समो यस् नरो न विद्यते वक्ता तथा सत्सु विनिश्चयज्ञः। सएष शूरो नित्यममर्षणश्च धीमान्प्राज्ञः सहदेवः पतिर्मे
There is no man equal to him in wisdom or speech, discerning among the noble. This ever-courageous, patient, and wise Sahadeva is my husband.
त्यजेत्प्राणान्प्रविशेद्धव्यवाहं न त्वेवैष व्याहरेद्धर्मबाह्यम्। सदा मनस्वी क्षत्रधर्मे रतश्च कुन्त्याः प्राणैरिष्टतमो नृवीरः
He would give up his life or enter fire, but never speak what is unrighteous. Always resolute, devoted to the warrior’s duty, he is most dear to Kuntī, a hero among men.
विशीर्यनतीं नावमिवार्णवान्ते रत्नाभिपूर्णां मकरस्य पृष्ठे। सेनां तवेमां हतसर्वयोधां विक्षोभितां द्रक्ष्यसि पाण्डुपुत्रैः
Like a ship shattered at sea, filled with jewels, upon the back of a makara, so will you see your army, all its warriors slain and scattered by the sons of Pāṇḍu.
इत्येते वै कथिताः पाण्डुपुत्रा यांस्त्वं मोहादवमत्य प्रवृत्तः। यद्येतेभ्यो मुच्यसे रिष्टदेहः पुनर्जन्म प्राप्स्यसे जीवितं च
Thus have I described the sons of Pāṇḍu, whom you, in your delusion, have scorned and opposed. If you escape from them with your life, you will be reborn and live again.
ततः पार्थाः पञ्चपञ्चेन्द्रकल्पा- स्त्यक्त्वा त्रस्तान्प्राञ्जलींस्तान्पदातीन्। यथाऽनीकं शरवर्षान्धकारं चक्रुः क्रुद्धाः सर्वतस्ते निगृह्य
Then the five sons of Pāṇḍu, equal to five Indras, left behind the terrified, supplicant foot soldiers, and, restraining themselves in anger, unleashed a darkness of arrow-rain upon the enemy ranks.
संतिष्ठध्वं प्रहरत तूर्णं विपरिधावत। इति स्म सैन्धवो राजा चोदयामास तान्नृपन्
"Stand firm! Strike swiftly! Surround them!" Thus did the Sindhu king urge his warriors on.
ततो घोरतमः शब्दोरणे समभवत्तदा। भीमार्जुनयमान्दृष्ट्वा सैन्यानां सयुधिष्ठिरान्
Then, in that battle, a most terrible sound arose as Bhīma, Arjuna, and Yudhiṣṭhira were seen among the armies.
शिबिसिंधुत्रिगर्तानां विषादश्चाप्यजायत। तान्दृष्ट्वापुरुषव्याघ्रान्व्याघ्रानिव बलोत्कटान्
Fear arose among the Śibis, Sindhus, and Trigartas, seeing those tiger-like men, fierce as tigers in strength.
हेमबिन्दुं महोत्सेधां सर्वशैक्यायसीं गदाम्। प्रगृह्याभ्यद्रवद्भीमः सैन्धवं कालचोदितम्
Bhīma, grasping his great iron mace studded with gold, rushed at the Sindhu king, impelled by fate.
तदन्तरमथावृत्य कोटिकाश्योऽभ्यहारयत्। महता रथवंशेन परिवार्य वृकोधरम्
Then, turning aside, Kotikashya advanced, surrounding Vrikodara with a great array of chariots.
शक्तितोमरनाराचैर्वीरबाहुप्रचोदितैः। कीर्यमाणोपि बहुभिर्न स्म भीमोऽभ्यकम्पत
Though assailed by many heroic arms with spears, javelins, and arrows, Bhima did not waver.
गजं तु सगजारोहं पदातींश्च चतुर्दश। जघान गदया भीमः सैन्धवध्वजंनीमुखे
Bhima struck down an elephant with its rider and fourteen foot soldiers at the front of the Saindhava banner, wielding his mace.
पार्थः पञ्चशताञ्शूरान्पार्वतीयान्महारथान्। परीप्समानः सौवीरं जघान ध्वजिनीमुखे
Partha, desiring to reach Sauvira, slew five hundred mighty warriors from the Parvata region at the head of the army.
राजा स्वयं सुवीराणां प्रवराणां प्रहारिणाम्। निमेषमात्रेण शतं जघान समरे तदा
The king himself, among the foremost and bravest of the Suviras, struck down a hundred in the battle in a mere instant.
ददृशे नकुलस्तत्ररथात्प्रस्कन्द्य खङ्गधृत्। शिरांसि पादरक्षाणां बीजवत्प्रवपन्मुहुः
There Nakula was seen leaping from his chariot, sword in hand, repeatedly cutting off the heads of the foot soldiers like scattering seeds.
सहदेवस्तु संयाय रथेन गजयोधिनः। पातयामास नाराचैर्द्रुमेभ्य इव बर्हिणः
Sahadeva, advancing with his chariot against the elephant warriors, brought them down with arrows as birds are felled from trees.
ततस्त्रिगर्तः सधनुरवतीर्य महारथात्। गदया चतुरो वाहान्राज्ञस्तस् तदाऽवधीत्
Then the Trigarta, descending from his great chariot with mace in hand, killed four horses of the king.
तमथाभ्यागतं राजा पदातिं कुन्तिनन्दनः। अर्धचन्द्रेण बाणएन विव्याधोरसि धर्मराट्
As that foot soldier approached, King Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, struck him in the chest with a crescent-tipped arrow.
स भिन्नहृदयो वीरो वक्राच्छोणितमुद्वमन्। पपाताभिमुखं प्राप्तश्चिन्नमूल इव द्रुमः
That hero, his heart pierced, vomited blood and fell forward to the ground like a tree with its roots cut.
इन्द्रसेनद्वितीयस्तु रथात्प्रस्कन्द्य धर्मराट्। हताश्वः सहदेवस्य प्रतिपेदे महारथम्
Then Indrasena's son, the king, having lost his horses, leapt from his chariot and mounted Sahadeva's great chariot.
नकुलं त्वभिसंवार्य क्षेमंकरमहामुखौ। उभावुभतस्तीक्ष्णैः शरवर्षैरवर्षताम्
Ksemankara and Mahamukha, enclosing Nakula, showered him from both sides with sharp volleys of arrows.
तौ शरैरभिवर्षन्तौ जीमूताविव वार्षिकौ। एकैकेन विपाठेन जघ्ने माद्रवतीसुतः
As those two rained arrows like storm clouds, the son of Madri struck each of them down with a single, well-aimed arrow.
त्रिगर्तराजः सुरथस्तस्याथ गजूर्गतः। रथमाक्षेपयामास गजेन गजयानवित्
Then Suratha, king of the Trigartas, mounted his elephant and with it struck Nakula's chariot.
