Thus addressed by the king of the Sindhus with words that shook her heart, Kṛṣṇā withdrew from that place, her face frowning.
Disregarding his words and rebuking him, the slender-waisted one said, 'Do not speak so,' and told the Sindhu king to be ashamed.
Longing for her husbands who had arrived, the blameless one delayed, responding to his words with words of her own.
Do not speak thus, O mighty-armed one; you do not consider what is right. I am the younger sister of both the Pāṇḍavas and the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
Duśśalā is her name, and you, O best of kings, are her husband; my brother, the great chariot-warrior, should rightly be protected by you.
Born in a family of the righteous, you do not regard dharma; thus addressed, the king of the Sindhus then spoke these words in reply.
You do not understand the law of kings, nor women, nor jewels; sages declare that these are common to all in this world.
Sisters, female relatives, and the wives of brothers—kings freely take pleasure with them, and so do those born in royal families.
With a face flushed by anger and passion, eyes ablaze, brows alternately raised and lowered, the daughter of Drupada spoke again to the mighty ruler, her words bursting forth.
O fool, you do not feel shame when you speak to illustrious, great warriors, sharp as poison, steadfast in their duties, resembling Indra, even among assemblies of yakshas and rakshasas.
Noble people never speak evil, whether of those dwelling in the forest or householders; they honor ascetics filled with knowledge, and so do virtuous heroes.
I think there is no one among these assembled kshatriyas who, today, would seize you by the hand and pull you back as you fall into the mouth of the underworld.
You would not drive away a mighty elephant, roaming the slopes of the Himalayas like a mountain peak, from its herd with a staff; yet you hope to defeat King Yudhishthira.
Out of childishness, you pluck the whiskers of a sleeping lion of great strength; striking him with your foot as he flees, you will see Bhimasena when he is enraged.
You trample upon a mighty, terrifying, grown lion born in the mountain caves while he sleeps; you will face the fierce Arjuna when he is angered.
You step with your foot upon the tails of Krishna's snakes, sharp-mouthed and double-tongued, intoxicated; you seek to fight the two youngest, supreme among men, the Pandavas.
Just as bamboo, banana, or lotus bear fruit only to their own destruction, so too, protected by them, you will meet your end, like a crab with its offspring.
I know, O Krishna, that you are aware of this, and so are the sons of the king; yet, with such empty threats, you cannot frighten us today.
We, O Krishna, are all born in seventeen noble families, without inferiority; Draupadi considers the Pandu sons superior in six virtues, lacking in none.
So quickly mount an elephant or a chariot; for by mere words, we cannot be subdued. If you wish, plead again for the favor of the Sauvira king, speaking humbly.
Though mighty, I am regarded here as weak by the Sauvira king; I am not convinced that I should beg the Sauvira king, nor speak humbly to him.
If Krishna and Arjuna, united in one chariot, tread the path together, even Indra could not take it from them; how then could a mere human, or anyone else?
Just as a fierce warrior, slayer of enemy heroes, destroys minds from his chariot, so will I enter your army, burning your chest like fire among hot coals.
Janardana, the hero of the Andhaka and Vrishni clans, and all the mighty archers of the Kekaya line—these royal sons, delighted, will follow my path.
The arrows released from the bowstring, resounding like thunder, shot from the Gandiva with great speed, strike the hand of Dhananjaya, and their terrible noise roars even more fearfully.
When you see Arjuna, mighty in valor, releasing torrents of great arrows from the Gandiva, swift as swarms of locusts, then you will reproach your own judgment.
When the wielder of Gandiva, accompanied by the blare of conches and the clatter of chariot wheels, repeatedly draws his bow and aims arrows at your chest, what will your mind be then?
When you see Bhima advancing with his mace, the sons of Madri rushing from all sides, both spewing the venom of wrath born of indignation, you will soon experience long-lasting torment, wretch.
Just as I have never, even in thought, transgressed my noble husbands in any way, by that truth today I will see you dragged away by the Pandavas.
I will not be able to fall into confusion while being dragged by you, cruel one; for I have been united with the foremost Kurus, and now I have come again to the Kamyaka forest.
