When all those kings were seated, O Bhārata, Koṭikāśya swiftly went to the Sindhu king’s camp.
He reported everything that had been said by Kṛṣṇā; hearing Koṭikāśya’s words, the Sauvīra king spoke to Śaibya.
When she spoke, my heart delighted in her words. How have you, who are famed among noble women, withdrawn from her company?
Seeing her, all other women seem to me like does compared to a lioness. Mighty-armed one, I speak the truth to you.
Just by seeing her, my heart has been utterly stolen. Tell me about that blessed woman, if she is truly human, O Śaibya.
She is Draupadī, Kṛṣṇā, the illustrious princess, greatly esteemed as the queen of the five sons of Pāṇḍu.
She is dear and highly regarded by all the Pāṇḍavas. Go to her, O Sauvīra, and present yourself before her.
Thus addressed, Jayadratha, lord of the Sauvīras and Sindhus, replied, 'I will see Draupadī,' his mind set on evil.
He entered the sacred hermitage, like a wolf into a lion's den; then, the seventh son of himself, spoke these words to Kṛṣṇā.
Are you well, O beautiful one? Are your husbands also unharmed? And those for whose welfare you care—are they all safe as well?
Is all well with you, O king, in your kingdom, treasury, and army? Do you rightly govern alone the Śibis, the Sauviras, and the Sindhus, and all the others known to you?
The Kaurava king, Yudhiṣṭhira, son of Kuntī, is well, as am I and his brothers, and all the others about whom you inquire.
Accept this water for washing your feet and this seat, O prince. I will give you, who are accompanied by deer and does, your morning meal.
There are antelopes, spotted deer, blackbucks, hares, bears, buffaloes, sambars, and many other wild animals.
Boars, buffaloes, and other kinds of wild beasts—Yudhiṣṭhira, son of Kuntī, will himself offer all these to you.
All that you desire for your morning meal is ready for you from me; come, ascend my chariot and enjoy comfort.
You should not support the Pāṇḍavas, who have lost their prosperity and kingdom, are wretched, dispirited, and dwelling in the forest.
A wise woman does not choose a husband who has lost his fortune; if she does, let her follow him, but she should not live in ruin.
Deprived of wealth and kingdom, they are ruined for all time; it is enough for you to endure hardship out of devotion to the sons of Pāṇḍu.
Become my wife, O fair-hipped one; abandon them and accept me. Together with me, gain all the Sindhus and Sauviras.
Thus addressed by the king of the Sindhus with words that shook her heart, Kṛṣṇā withdrew from that place, her face frowning.
Disregarding his words and rebuking him, the slender-waisted one said, 'Do not speak so,' and told the Sindhu king to be ashamed.
Longing for her husbands who had arrived, the blameless one delayed, responding to his words with words of her own.
Do not speak thus, O mighty-armed one; you do not consider what is right. I am the younger sister of both the Pāṇḍavas and the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
Duśśalā is her name, and you, O best of kings, are her husband; my brother, the great chariot-warrior, should rightly be protected by you.
Born in a family of the righteous, you do not regard dharma; thus addressed, the king of the Sindhus then spoke these words in reply.
You do not understand the law of kings, nor women, nor jewels; sages declare that these are common to all in this world.
Sisters, female relatives, and the wives of brothers—kings freely take pleasure with them, and so do those born in royal families.
With a face flushed by anger and passion, eyes ablaze, brows alternately raised and lowered, the daughter of Drupada spoke again to the mighty ruler, her words bursting forth.
O fool, you do not feel shame when you speak to illustrious, great warriors, sharp as poison, steadfast in their duties, resembling Indra, even among assemblies of yakshas and rakshasas.
