At midnight, he will suddenly come to deceive us; how shall we escape from this hardship brought by fate?
Seeing them absorbed in such anxious thoughts, sighing again and again, the illustrious Krishna, present before them, spoke these words.
Knowing your distress caused by the sage's extreme anger, O Parthas, and Draupadi's concern, I have come swiftly.
There is no fear at all from the sage Durvasa; frightened by your power, he has already fled.
Those who are steadfast in righteousness never falter at any time. I take leave of you; I shall depart. May auspiciousness be yours always.
Having heard what was spoken by Keśava, the sons of Pāṇḍu, together with Draupadī, became peaceful in mind and addressed him, free from distress.
With you as our protector, Govinda, we have crossed the difficult calamity, O Lord, like those who, finding a raft, escape drowning in a vast ocean.
Having been permitted with the words, 'Go in peace, may good fortune be yours,' he departed for the city.
The blessed Pāṇḍavas, together with Draupadī, O Lord, remained joyful, wandering from forest to forest. Thus I have told you, O king, what you asked me here.
Such deceitful acts, devised by the evil-hearted sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra against the Pāṇḍavas dwelling in the forest, proved fruitless.
In that forest, rich with many beasts, the great chariot-warriors, foremost among the Bharatas, roamed in Kāmyaka like the immortals.
Observing the various regions of the forest all around, they saw groves blooming beautifully, delightful in accordance with the season.
The Pāṇḍavas, fond of hunting, wandered through that great forest, enjoying themselves like Indra among kings, for some time, O subduers of foes.
Then, all together, those tiger-like men went in four directions to hunt, striving for the sake of the Brāhmaṇas.
They left Draupadī at the hermitage, with the permission of Ṛṣi Tṛṇabindu, the great ascetic, and Ghaumya, the priest.
At that time, the renowned king of the Sindhus, Vārdhakṣatri, desiring marriage, set out for the land of the Sālveyas.
Surrounded by a great retinue, befitting a king, accompanied by many kings, he arrived at Kāmyaka.
There he saw the illustrious wife of the Pāṇḍavas, Draupadī, standing at the entrance of the hermitage, alone in the desolate forest.
Radiant in form, possessing supreme beauty, she illumined the forest region like lightning in a dark cloud.
Thinking, 'Is she an apsaras, a divine maiden, or an illusion created by the gods?' all of them, with hands joined in reverence, gazed upon her, faultless.
Then that king of the Sindhus, Vārdhakṣatri Jayadratha, astonished at her flawless form, became filled with wicked intent.
Overcome by desire, he spoke to the king Koṭikāśya, saying, 'Whose is this flawless woman? Or is she not even human?'
No one has come to marry me after seeing this exceedingly beautiful woman; I will take her alone and return to my own house.
Go, gentle one, and find out whose she is, or where she is from, and for what purpose this fair-browed woman has come to this harsh and thorny forest.
Perhaps this lovely-hipped, world-beautiful woman with sidelong glances, charming teeth, and slender waist might choose me today.
Perhaps, having obtained this splendid woman, I might have my desire fulfilled; go and find out, Kotika, who her protector is.
Then Kotikashya, hearing this, leapt down from the chariot, earrings shining, and approached to question her, like a jackal approaching a tigress.
Who are you, bending the branch of the kadamba tree, standing here in this hermitage, shining like a tongue of fire at night, your fair brows tossed by the wind?
You are endowed with extraordinary beauty, and yet you do not fear the forest—who are you? Are you a goddess, a yakshi, a danavi, a celestial nymph, or a noble lady of the daityas?
Are you a radiant naga princess, a forest-dwelling woman, or a night-roaming spirit? Are you the wife of Indra, Varuna, Yama, Soma, or Kubera?
