With inexhaustible food given by the Sun, up to the limit of Draupadi’s meal, they satisfied the Brahmanas who came for food, and also with various kinds of meat from the wild animals.
O great sage, how did the wicked sons of Dhritarashtra, headed by Duryodhana, behave towards them, practicing evil conduct?
Following the counsel of Duhshasana, Karna, and Shakuni, tell us this, O revered Vaishampayana, as I ask.
Hearing of their way of life, as if they were living in the city, King Duryodhana conceived evil against them.
Thus, those wicked-minded ones, Karna, Duhshasana, and others, skilled in deceit, devised various means against them.

Then, the righteous, ascetic, and greatly renowned Durvasa arrived, accompanied by many disciples, of his own accord.
Seeing the sage arrive, exceedingly irascible, the illustrious one, together with his brothers, invited him with hospitality.
He himself worshipped him according to proper rites, standing like a servant; the eminent sage stayed there for several days.

The king attended upon him day and night, tirelessly; King Duryodhana, fearing his curse.
He said, 'I am hungry, give me food quickly, O king,' and then went to bathe, returning only after a long time.
He said, 'I will not eat today, for I am not hungry,' and vanished; then suddenly he would return, urging them to prepare food swiftly.

While this was happening, whenever King Duryodhana did not show any agitation or anger, the sage was pleased.
He said to him, 'I am difficult to withstand and grant boons.'
Choose a boon, good fortune to you, whatever is in your mind; when I am pleased, there is nothing righteous that is unattainable for you.
Hearing these words of the great sage, whose soul was intent, Suyodhana thought himself born anew.
Already, Karna, Duhshasana, and the others had advised him: 'When the sage is pleased, he should be asked for something,' so that wicked-minded one had resolved.
Overflowing with great joy, O King, he asked him for this boon: 'Just as you have become a guest for me along with your disciples—'

Saying, 'So I shall do, for your sake,' thus addressed Suyodhana; and Durvasa, the best of Brahmins, departed as he had come.
Even though his purpose was accomplished, Suyodhana then considered himself fulfilled, and, greatly delighted, took Karna's hand in his own.
