Then, driven by hunger, he ate all that food as if it were delicious, in a crazed state; and Mudgala gave it to him.
Having eaten all the food, he then smeared his own body with the leftovers, and just as he had come, so he departed.
Smearing himself with that food, he ran about laughing and singing, dancing and running, and shouting loudly with wild gestures.
In this way, when the next sacred day arrived, the wise one came again and ate all the food, living on the scraps.
But that sage, though without food, again gathered gleanings; yet hunger could not disturb Mudgala or cause him to waver.
Neither anger, nor envy, nor disdain, nor agitation entered that best of twice-born, even as he gave up his gleanings with wife and son.
Thus, Durvasa, the foremost sage, approached him, steadfast in resolve, six times at the proper time, testing his gleaner's vow.
And no change of mind was seen in the sage; his mind, pure in its essence, appeared spotless and clear.
Then, pleased, that sage spoke to Mudgala: 'There is no giver in this world equal to you, free from envy.'
He dispels the sense of 'mine' regarding food, and takes only steadfastness; the tongue, following the senses, always seeks flavors.
The life-breaths arise from food; the mind is difficult to restrain and fickle; but the single-pointedness of mind and senses is true austerity.
What is earned by toil is given up without sorrow in the mind; all this, O virtuous one, you have accomplished rightly.
We are pleased and blessed to have met with you; mastery of the senses, steadfastness, sharing, self-restraint, tranquility, compassion, truth, and righteousness—all these are established in you.
All the worlds, moving and unmoving, are upheld by righteousness; and righteousness itself is upheld by you, endowed with steadfastness.
There is no one else endowed with such pure nature as you; by your deeds you have conquered the worlds and attained the highest state.
Ah, your charity is renowned among the dwellers of heaven; you, steadfast in good conduct, will go to heaven in this very body.
As Durvasa the sage was thus speaking, a divine messenger arrived before Mudgala with a celestial chariot.
It was yoked with swans and cranes, adorned with a network of tinkling bells, wondrous, moving at will, and fragrant with divine scents.
He said to that sage among Brahmins, 'Ascend this celestial chariot, won by your deeds; you have attained the highest perfection, O sage.'
To him, as he spoke thus, the sage addressed the divine messenger: 'I wish to hear from you the qualities of those who dwell in heaven.'
'What are the virtues of those who reside there? What is their austerity, and what is their resolve? What happiness is there in heaven, and is there any fault, O divine messenger?'
'The wise say that sharing seven steps makes a friendship, and the virtuous act according to their lineage. Considering our friendship, I ask you, O illustrious one.'
'Whatever is true and beneficial here, speak that without hesitation. Hearing your words, I will act accordingly, firm in my resolve.'
'Great sage, your mind is not set on what should be done. The supreme happiness of heaven, once attained, should be accepted as the wise do, after reflection.'
'Above is that world known as heaven, ever pure, the path of the gods, O sage, always ascending and righteous.'
'Those who have not performed austerities, nor offered great sacrifices, nor the untruthful or atheists, O Mudgala, do not go there.'
'The righteous, self-controlled, peaceful, restrained, free from envy, devoted to charity and virtue, and the brave with auspicious marks—such men go there.'
'Having performed supreme righteousness, with minds of tranquility and self-control, men reach those worlds of the virtuous, O Brahmin, which are inhabited by the good.'
'The gods, Sādhyas, Viśvedevas, great sages, Yamas, Dharmas, O descendant of Mudgala, and also Gandharvas and Apsarases dwell there.'
'These hosts of divine beings, each in their own splendid, radiant, and delightful worlds, filled with every desire, shine brilliantly.'
