But the rest of the Pandavas, O king, spoke nothing unpleasant; and the messenger reported everything as it happened to the son of Dhritarashtra.
Then the best of men, rulers from many lands, and greatly fortunate Brahmins, came toward the city of Dhritarashtra.
They were honored according to the scriptures, as prescribed and in due order, with utmost joy and satisfaction by the kings.
King Dhritarashtra also, surrounded by all the Kauravas, filled with great happiness, spoke to Vidura.
Let all the people, O Kshatta, be made comfortable and provided with food, so that they may be pleased in the sacrificial hall; let this arrangement be made accordingly.
Vidura, understanding this command, O subduer of foes, honored all the classes, as appropriate and in proper measure, being wise and versed in righteousness.
He provided them with food and drink, fragrant garlands, and various garments, with delight and enthusiasm.
Having performed the concluding bath as prescribed and in due order, the heroic king, after consoling and giving various gifts, dismissed the guests and thousands of Brahmins.
After sending off all the kings, surrounded by his brothers, he entered Hastinapura together with Karna and the son of Subala.
As the great king entered, the bards praised the unconquered one, and the people also praised the foremost of kings, the mighty archer.
Then the people scattered parched grain and sandalwood powder, and said, 'By good fortune, O king, your sacrifice has been completed without obstacle.'
But others there, the disputants, said to that king, 'This sacrifice is not equal to the one of Yudhishthira.'
'This sacrifice does not reach even a sixteenth part of his,' so some of the disputants spoke to that lord of men.
But his friends there said, 'This sacrifice surpasses all others; indeed, it was performed by the wise son of Dhritarashtra.'
Yayati, Nahusha, Mandhata, and Bharata—all, having performed this sacrifice, became purified and ascended to heaven.
Hearing these auspicious words of his friends, O bull of the Bharatas, the king entered the city joyfully and his own palace.
Then, O lord of the people, he bowed at the feet of his mother and father, and of Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and the wise Vidura.
Honored by his younger brothers, the delight of his brothers sat on the chief seat, surrounded by his brothers.
Rising up, the son of the charioteer spoke to the great king: 'By good fortune, O best of the Bharatas, this great sacrifice of yours is completed.'
When the sons of Pritha were slain in battle and you performed the Rajasuya, O best of men, I was brought here to honor you again.
Then the illustrious king, son of Dhritarashtra, spoke to him.
What you have said about the evil-hearted Pandavas is true; when those foremost of men are slain and the great sacrifice is attained, O hero, you alone will prosper again at the Rajasuya.
Having spoken thus, the king embraced Karna, O Bharata, and the Kaurava began to contemplate the Rajasuya, the greatest of sacrifices.
Then that foremost of kings, the son of Dhritarashtra, addressed the Kauravas standing nearby—Radheya, Saubala, and the others.
When shall I, having slain all the Pandavas, seize that supreme, wealth-filled Rajasuya sacrifice, O Kauravas?
Then Karna said to him, 'Hear me, O king among elephants: I will not wash my feet until Arjuna is slain.'
I will not eat food prepared with oil and honey, I will observe the vow of the Asuras, and I will never say 'I have nothing' to anyone who asks.
Then the mighty bowmen, the sons of Dhritarashtra, acclaimed loudly when Karna vowed to slay Phalguna in battle.
At that time, the sons of Dhritarashtra, relying on the vow spoken by the son of the charioteer, believed the Pandavas to be already conquered.
King Duryodhana, O lord of kings, dismissed the foremost of men and entered his palace, resplendent like a lord entering the celestial garden.
