भोः सुयोधन राजेन्द्र भरतानां कुलोद्वह। शूरैः परिवृतो नित्यं तथैव च महात्मभिः
O Suyodhana, great king, exalted scion of the Bharatas, you are always surrounded by valiant and noble souls.
अकार्षीः साहसमिदं कस्मात्प्रायोपवेशनम्। आत्मत्यागी ह्यधो याति वाच्यतां चायशस्करीम्
Why did you undertake this rash act of preparing for death by fasting? One who abandons himself descends below and earns lasting infamy.
न हि कार्यविरुद्धेषु बहुपापेषु कर्मसु। मूलघातिषु सज्जन्ते बुद्धिमन्तो भवद्विधाः
Indeed, wise men like you do not become attached to actions that are opposed to duty, sinful, and destructive at their root.
नियच्छैनां मतिं राजन्धर्मार्थसुखनाशिनीम्। यशःप्रतापवीर्यघ्नीं शत्रूणां हर्षवर्धनीम्
Restrain this intention, O king, which destroys righteousness, wealth, and happiness, which slays fame, glory, and strength, and brings joy to your enemies.
श्रूयतां तु प्रभो तत्त्वं दिव्यतां चात्मनो नृप। निर्माणं च रशरीरस्य ततो धैर्यमवाप्नुहि
Now hear, O lord, the truth and the divine nature of your own self, and the creation of your extraordinary body; then gain courage.
पुरा त्व तपसाऽस्माभिर्लब्धो राजन्महेश्वरात्। पूर्वकायश्च ते सर्वो निर्मितो वज्रसंचयैः
Long ago, through our austerities, O king, we obtained you from the great Lord Shiva; your former body was entirely fashioned from a mass of thunderbolts.
अस्त्रैरभेद्यः शस्त्रैश्चाप्यधःकायश्च तेऽनघ। कृतः पुष्पमयो देव्या रूपतस्त्रीमनोहरः
Your lower body, O faultless one, was made invulnerable to weapons and missiles, and by the goddess, a form delightful to women was created, woven of flowers.
एवमीश्वरसंयुक्तस्तव देहो नृपोत्तम। देव्या च राजशार्दूल दिव्यस्त्वं हि न मानुषः
Thus, O best of kings, your body is joined with divine power, by the goddess as well; you are divine, not human.
क्षत्रियाश्च महावीर्या भगदत्तपुरोगमाः। दिव्यास्त्रविदुषः शूराः क्षपयिष्यन्ति ते रिपून्
And mighty Kshatriyas, foremost among them Bhagadatta, skilled in celestial weapons and valiant, will destroy your enemies.
तदलं ते विषादेन भयं तव न विद्यते। सहायार्थं च ते वीराः संभूता बुवि दानवाः
Therefore, enough of your despair; you have nothing to fear. For your aid, heroic Danavas have arisen on earth.
भीष्मद्रोणकृपादींश्च प्रवेक्ष्यन्त्यपरेऽसुराः। यैराविष्टा घृणां त्यक्त्वा योत्स्यन्ते तव वैरिभिः
Other Asuras will enter Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and the rest; possessed by them, they will cast off compassion and fight your foes.
नैव पुत्रान्न च भ्रातॄन्न पितॄन्न च बान्धवान्। नैव शिष्यान्न च ज्ञातीन्न बालान्त्यविरान्न च। युधि संप्रहरिष्यन्तो मोक्ष्यन्ति कुरुसत्तम
O best of Kurus, in battle, they will not spare sons, brothers, fathers, relatives, disciples, kin, children, elders, or friends when they engage in combat.
निःस्नेहा दानवाविष्टाः समाक्रान्तेऽन्तरात्मनि। प्रहरिष्यन्ति बन्धुभ्यः स्नेहमुत्सृज्य दूरतः
Possessed by Danavas, devoid of affection, when their inner selves are overtaken, they will strike down their own kin, having cast aside all attachment.
हृष्टाः पुरुषशार्दूलाः कलुषीकृतमानसाः। अनभिज्ञातमूलाश्च दैवाच्च विधिनिर्मितात्। व्याभाषमाणाश्चान्योन्यं न मे जीवन्विमोक्ष्यसे
Exultant, O tiger among men, their minds corrupted, their true origins unknown, shaped by fate and destiny, as they speak among themselves, you will not escape alive.
सर्वे शस्त्रास्त्रमोक्षेण पौरुषे समवस्थिताः। श्लाघमानाः कुरुश्रेष्ठ करिष्यन्ति जनक्षयम्
All, steadfast in the use of weapons and missiles, proud of their prowess, O best of Kurus, will bring about the destruction of men.
तेपि पञ्च महात्मानः प्रतियोत्सन्ति पाण्डवाः। वधं चैषां करिष्यन्ति दैवयुक्ता महाबलाः
Yet those five great-souled Pandavas will resist them, and, empowered by destiny and great strength, will slay them.
दैत्यरक्षोगणाश्चैव संभूताः क्षत्रयोनिषु। योत्स्यन्ति युधि विक्रम्य शत्रुभिस्तव पार्थिव
And hosts of Daityas and Rakshasas, born in Kshatriya lineages, will fight bravely in battle against your enemies, O king.
गदाभिर्मुसलैः शूलैः शस्त्रैरुच्चावचैस्तथा। `प्रहरिष्यनति ते वीरास्तवारिषु महाबलाः
With maces, clubs, spears, and weapons of every kind, your mighty warriors will strike fiercely at your foes.
यच्च तेऽन्तर्गतं वीर भयमर्जुनसंभवम्। तत्रापि विहितोऽस्माभिर्वधोपायोऽर्जुनस्य वै
And as for the fear that has arisen within you, O hero, concerning Arjuna, we too have devised a means for Arjuna's destruction.
हतस्य नरकस्यात्मा कर्णमूर्तिमुपाश्रितः। तद्वैरं संस्मरन्वीर योत्स्यते केशवार्जुनौ
The soul of the slain Naraka has taken refuge in Karṇa's form; remembering that enmity, O hero, he will fight against Keśava and Arjuna.
स ते विक्रमशौण्डीरो रणे पार्थं विजेष्यति। कर्णः प्रहरतांश्रेष्ठः सर्वांश्चारीन्महारथः
That Karṇa, valiant and skilled in battle, supreme among warriors, will conquer Pārtha in combat and defeat all his enemies.
ज्ञात्वैतच्छद्मना वज्री रक्षार्थं सव्यसाचिनः। कुण्डले कवचं चैव कर्णस्यापहरिष्यति
Knowing this scheme, the wielder of the thunderbolt will, for the protection of Savyasācin, take away Karṇa's earrings and armor.
तस्मादस्माभिरप्यत्र दैत्याः शतसहस्रशः। नियुक्ता राक्षसाश्चैव ये ते संशप्तका इति। प्रख्यातास्तेऽर्जुनं वीरं युधि हिंस्यन्ति मा शुचः
Therefore, by us also, hundreds of thousands of Daityas and Rākṣasas, known as the Saṃśaptakas, have been appointed here; they will attack the heroic Arjuna in battle—do not grieve.
असपत्ना त्वया हीयं भोक्तव्या वसुधा नृप। मा विषादं गमस्तस्मान्नैतत्त्वय्युपपद्यते
The earth, O king, is to be enjoyed by you without rivals; therefore, do not fall into despair, for this does not befit you.
विनष्टे त्वयि चास्माकं पक्षो हीयेत कौरव। गच्छ वीर न ते बुद्धिरन्या कार्या कथंचन। त्वमस्माकं गतिर्नित्यं देवतानां च पाण्डवाः
If you are destroyed, our side would be weakened, O Kaurava; go, hero, you must not entertain any other thought. You are always our refuge, as the Pāṇḍavas are for the gods.
एवमुक्त्वा परिष्वज्य दैत्यास्तं राजकुञ्जरम्। समाश्वास्य च दुर्धर्षं पुत्रवद्दानवर्षभाः
Having spoken thus, the Daityas embraced that royal elephant among men, comforted the indomitable one as a son, O bull among the Bhāratas.
स्थिरां कृत्वा बुद्धिमस्य प्रियाण्युक्त्वा च भारत। गम्यतामित्यनुज्ञाय जयमाप्नुहि चेत्यथ
Strengthening his resolve, speaking words of affection, and granting him leave, they said, 'Go, and may you attain victory.'
तैर्विसृष्टं महाबाहुं कृत्या सैवानयत्पुरः। तमेव देशं यत्रासौ तदा प्रायमुपाविशत्
Released by them, the mighty-armed one was led forth by Kṛtyā, who brought him to that very place where he had been, and there he sat down, exhausted.
प्रतिनिक्षिप्यतं वीरं कृत्या समभिपूज्य च। अनुज्ञाता च राज्ञा सा तत्रैवान्तरधीयत
After respectfully placing the hero down, Kṛtyā, having been honored, was dismissed by the king and vanished there itself.
गतायामथ तस्यां तु राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा। स्वप्नभूतमिदं सर्वमचिन्तयत भारत
When she had departed, King Duryodhana then considered all this as a dream-like vision, O Bhārata.
