When the Kaurava had gone, Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, that heroic one, honored by the twice-born, remained there with his brothers.
Surrounded by all those ascetics rich in austerity, like Indra among the immortals, he dwelled joyfully in that Dvaita forest.
After being defeated, bound by his enemies, and then released in battle by the great-souled Pandavas, that proud and wicked man—
—who was always boastful, arrogant, and constantly belittled the Pandavas' manliness and generosity—
—for Duryodhana, that sinful one, always speaking with pride, entry into Hastinapura now seems impossible to me.
Describe in detail, O Vaishampayana, the entry of that one, filled with shame and a mind troubled by sorrow.
Released by the righteous king, the son of Dhritarashtra, Suyodhana, approached with head bowed in shame, sinking down, greatly distressed.
The king went to his own city, followed by his fourfold army, his mind scorched by grief, pondering his defeat.
On the way, in a pleasant and fertile place with good water, he halted, and arranged the elephants, horses, chariots, and foot-soldiers each in their proper places.
Then, as the king sat on a couch shining like fire, overwhelmed like the moon seized by Rahu at the end of the night, Karna approached Duryodhana and spoke these words:
"By fortune you live, O Gandhari's son! By fortune we meet again! By fortune you have conquered the Gandharvas, those masters of illusion!"
"By fortune I see all your brothers, O joy of the Kurus, eager for victory in battle, having conquered their enemies, those great chariot-warriors!"
I was assailed by all the Gandharvas before your very eyes; I could not hold together my breaking army, and, wounded all over by arrows, I withdrew, overwhelmed.
But I consider it truly astonishing, O Bharata, that I now see you all here, unharmed, with your wives and mighty forces, released from that superhuman battle.
No man in this world, O Bharata, could have accomplished what you, O great king, did in battle together with your brothers.
When Karna spoke thus, King Duryodhana, his head bowed, replied in a voice choked with tears; and they released the king, who had been bound in iron fetters.
Unaware, O son of Radha, I do not reproach your words; you know that it was by my prowess that the Gandharvas, though victorious, were overcome.
The Gandharvas fought for a long time with my brothers and me, O mighty-armed one, and on both sides great destruction was wrought.
When those valiant sky-roaming warriors fought using their mastery of illusion, our battle with the celestial beings was no longer equal.
We were defeated in battle and taken captive, along with our servants, ministers, sons, wives, and armies, all being carried away through the sky in great distress.
Then some of our soldiers and great chariot-warriors, approaching in distress, pleaded with the Pandavas for protection.
"Here is King Duryodhana, son of Dhritarashtra, with his brothers, ministers, and wives, being carried off by the Gandharvas who dwell in heaven."
"Release this king, together with his wives, O blessed ones; let there be no resentment among the Kuru women." Thus spoke those who had escaped the battle, approaching the righteous king.
When this was said, the eldest son of Pandu, righteous in soul, persuaded all his brothers and ordered them to secure their release.
Then the Pandavas, best among men, went to that place and, though capable warriors, first sought peace and humbly requested their release.
But even after we pleaded, the Gandharvas, those sky-roaming heroes, did not release us, roaring like thunderclouds.
Then Arjuna, Bhima, and the mighty twins, Yudhishthira's brothers, unleashed volleys of arrows upon the Gandharvas from all sides.
Thereupon, all the celestial warriors abandoned the battle and ascended to heaven, dragging us along, their hearts filled with joy.
Then we saw, all around, Arjuna enveloped in a network of arrows, wielding weapons beyond the power of mortals.
Seeing all directions covered by Pandava's sharp arrows, the friend of Dhananjaya then revealed his true form.
